Dan Schofer

Head Coach

Schofer went on to complete an MS degree in exercise physiology at the University of Oregon.  After graduating from Oregon, Schofer was assistant coach for womens track and field at Carleton for one year. He went on to serve four years as assistant coach for cross country and track and field at Rhodes College. Schofers wife, Marie, was a three-time All-American at Rhodes and has PRs of 2:12 (800), 4:20 (1500), 9:57 (3k), and 16:54 (5k).  Marie is the Director of Admission at Cornell. Cochrane coaches the sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers in track & field. We are thrilled to have Karly join our coaching staff and our family at Cornell, Schofer said. Her success as a student-athlete, coaching experience and connection to Mount Vernon make her an ideal fit for our program. Cochrane returns to Mount Vernon from the University of Sioux Falls, where she served as assistant track & field coach since July 2014. During her short time in South Dakota, Cochrane coached four all-conference performers and two NCAA Division II qualifiers, including an All-American heptathlete in 2015. Cochrane, a 2014 Wartburg graduate, enjoyed a decorated track career for the Knights as a 19-time all-Iowa Conference performer, four-time NCAA qualifier and two-time NCAA Indoor All-American. At the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships, she ran on the runner-up 4x400 relay and seventh-place distance medley relay while taking ninth in the 400-meter run. Wartburgs women won eight conference team titles and four NCAA team championships including three national outdoor crowns from 2012-14 during Cochranes stay in Waverly. Cochrane excelled in the classroom as a three-time Academic All-American. She served on Wartburgs Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for three years. Cochrane earned a bachelors degree from Wartburg in business administration with a minor in leadership. She is pursuing a masters in business administration. During a distinguished prep career as a four-sport athlete at Mount Vernon, Cochrane was part of the Mustangs state championship teams in volleyball (2010), basketball (2010) and track & field (2009, 2010). The Mustangs were state runners-up in volleyball (2008, 2009) and track & field (2008), and qualified for the state softball tournament in 2009 (sixth) and 2010 (fourth). Cochrane was a three-time elite all-stater in track and a two-time first team all-state selection in softball. She ran on eight state championship relays and placed second in the open 400 in 2009. Cochrane was a member of the runner-up 4x400 and 4x800 teams at the Drake Relays. Hassell, a five-time Western Athletic Conference champion from Utah State University, joined the Cornell cross country and track & field coaching staff in 2012-13. A middle distance standout, Hassell was a school-record holder in both the indoor 800 (2:08.27) and outdoor 1500 (4:25.70) for the Aggies. Coach Hassell previously served as an assistant coach at the University of California at San Diego and San Diego Mesa College. Hassell lives in Mount Vernon with her husband Hans, an assistant professor in Cornell's politics department, and their children Johannes, Acadia and Finnegan. Horan joined Cornell's coaching staff in 2014-15, serving as an assistant for the cross country and track & field programs. Horan was a four-year letterwinner for the Rams in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. He graduated from Cornell in May 2014 with a bachelors degree in philosophy and a minor in kinesiology. Horan was named the teams Most Improved Athlete in cross country his sophomore season. As a senior, he served as a team captain for all three sports. Horans extra-curricular activities included participation in the Running Buddies program and the Kinesiology Club.

Horan was a four-year letterwinner for the Rams in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. He graduated from Cornell in May 2014 with a bachelors degree in philosophy and a minor in kinesiology. Horan was named the teams Most Improved Athlete in cross country his sophomore season. As a senior, he served as a team captain for all three sports. Horans extra-curricular activities included participation in the Running Buddies program and the Kinesiology Club.
