Peter Milliman
Assistant Coach
Milliman is the teams recruiting coordinator and assists in all facets of coaching and program management. Last season, Milliman led one of the youngest teams in the nation to a 6-7 record (1-5 Ivy), with four of its seven losses coming to nationally ranked opponents. His defensive unit held more than half of its opponents (7) to single digit goals. His man-down defense finished the season ranked sixth in the nation (.722), allowing just 10 man-up goals on the season. Cornell also held its Ivy League opponents to nearly 10 fewer shots per game than their season average (36.3 spg), while the team posted the third best goals-against average in the conference (10.2). Milliman helped the 2015 Big Red squad to a 10-6 record overall (4-2 Ivy) and claimed a share of its 29th Ivy League title and made its 27th NCAA tournament appearance. Cornell ranked in the top 10 of the USILA Coaches Poll in 10-of-13 weeks during the season, rising as high as No. 7 on March 16 following a dominating win over Yale. The Big Red earned an eight-seed in the NCAA Tournament, where it fell to Albany in the first round. Under Millimans direction, Cornells defense ranked second in the Ivy League by allowing just 9.94 goals per game. The defense was even better in conference play, ranking first in the league by allowing just 8.60 goals per contest. Following the season, senior defender Jordan Stevens earned his second consecutive unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection, and went on to earn second-team All-American honors. In Millimans first season with the Big Red as an assistant coach, the squad opened the year with a 9-0 record and was the last undefeated team in the nation. Cornell went 11-5 overall, with a mark of 5-1 in the Ivy League to win conference title and earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where it fell to national semifinalist Maryland on a goal scored with two seconds to play in the contest. The 2014 team exceeded all expectations as Cornell had been selected 17th overall in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Poll, marking the first time since being tabbed 11th in 2003 that Cornell was chosen to finish outside the top 10. Once the Big Red season began on Feb. 22, the team rose in the USILA poll for four straight weeks before earning a No. 2 ranking on March 24. Altogether, the team stayed in the top 10 for five straight weeks. Milliman came to Cornell after one season as a member of the Princeton coaching staff, despite being promoted to the teams offensive coordinator position just prior to his departure. As the assistant defensive coordinator in 2013, he helped the Tigers to a 9-6 record overall and a mark of 4-2 in the Ivy League. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Milliman spent four seasons as the head coach at Division II Pfeiffer, where he amassed a record of 37-26 as his teams improved their win total each year. During his tenure with the Falcons, he was twice named the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year. In his final season at Pfeiffer, Milliman led the team to a program-record 12 wins, as the Falcons reached the Conference Carolinas championship game for the second consecutive year, losing to national runner up Limestone 9-5. That season, Pfeiffer reached as high as 10th in the USILA Coaches Poll. Under Milliman the Falcons finished in the top five in DII in goals-against average, man-down defense and scoring margin in each of his final two seasons and led the nation in save percentage in 2011 (.657). He also coached 13 players who combined to earn 21 all-conference selections, including a program record nine in 2012. He also coached two Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year selections, as well as the programs first All-American in a decade. Before taking over at Pfeiffer, Milliman spent two years as an assistant coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, with a one-year stint as an assistant at Siena. In his time as an assistant coach, the Tigers and Saints went a combined 36-16 overall and 21-5 in their respective conferences. A 2012 graduate of Empire State College with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, Milliman was a three-time Division III All-America at Gettysburg, where he helped the Bullets to two NCAA Division III championship games. He was a three-time All-Centennial Conference pick and was selected to participate in the annual USILA North-South All-Star Game. Following his time at Gettysburg, Milliman went on to play professionally for four years with Major League Lacrosses Rochester Rattlers, winning an MLL Championship in 2008.
