Wes Newman

Head Coach

Newman helped the Cornell men to a 13-6 dual meet record in his first two campaigns on the sidelines, pushing the team to a pair of third place finishes in the Ancient Eight. In all, 66 swimmers on the school's various top 10 lists have competed during Newman's stay. All 10 in the top 10 among 200 butterfly swimmers in Cornell history were either Newman, a protege of Newman's, or a former teammate of Newman's. He has also assisted in the renaissance of the women's program, helping the Big Red to a 4-3 Ivy record in 2013-14, just the second winning park in program history (1991-92). The women matched their win total in conference action from its first four years with Newman on the staff, showing the significant strides they have made. In the eight years prior to his arrival, women's swimming and diving had won just four Ivy duals. The Canadian Olympic Trials participant and NCAA qualifier rewrote the Big Red record book during his four-year varsity career, graduating as one of the school's most decorated swimmers. A three-time Eastern champion, Newman holds five individual and four school relay records. He swam on five Eastern champion relay teams during his career as well. Newman qualified for the NCAA's in both 2007 and 2009 in the 200 free, and finished in the top five at the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials in two events (fourth in the 400 free, fifth in the 100 butterfly). A two-year team captain and the winner of the 2008 Richie Moran Award at Cornell, he was voted the team's most valuable performer in each of his four seasons. Newman was a catalyst for the program's undefeated 2007 dual meet season, as well as its third-place finish at the 2009 Ivy championship meet.  Out of the pool, Newman was just as impressive. He served as Treasurer of the Red Key Athletic Honor Society and tutored Ithaca HS students as part of the Dufree Tutoring Program. A Dean's List student, Newman was an NSCAA Scholastic All-American in 2009 and an honorable mention Scholastic All-American as a junior. Newman captured the Mario St. George Boiardi '04 Leadership Award for most embodying leadership, athleticism and a strong work ethic among Cornell senior student-athletes. He graduated in May with a degree in Applied Economics and Management.Wes Newman

Robin Dyer

Assistant Coach

Dyer Assistant Coach Robin Dyer is entering his 14th season as an assistant coach with the Cornell mens swimming and diving program and his 42nd year overall as a coach. The Big Red has continued its improvement as a team during Dyers tenure, as evidenced by the 10 straight seasons at .500 or better the men's program enjoyed from 2002-11. Cornells record-breaking and undefeated dual meet 2006 season was included during that span. The women have also made a historic turnaround, posting its second winning Ivy League season in school history with a first win over Princeton in school history (0-32) in 2013-14. According to Coach Joe Lucia, "Robin is a long-time friend. We first coached together in 1973 when we graduated from college, and he is a talented and experienced coach who I fully trust with all of the many varied aspects of making the team function effectively and smoothly. He has made significant positive contributions to all aspects of the team. I feel fortunate to have a coach of his experience and motivation level to work with on a daily basis." Dyers experience includes club, high school, masters and college teams. He spent 13 years coaching in Dallas, Texas, after coaching at Binghamton University from 1983-87. He began his coaching career in his hometown of Endicott, N.Y., in 1973. Over the years, Dyer has worked with a variety of age groups and ability levels, including junior and senior national champions, Olympic Trials finalists and high school All-Americans.  A graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor of arts degree in religion and philosophy in 1973, Dyer received his masters degree in physical education from Syracuse in 1983. *Updated August 15, 2014
