Melanie Loughin
Head Coach
Loughin begins her sixth season as the head coach of the womens golf program in 2016-17. She became the second head coach in program history on August 29, 2011. In her first season at the helm of the Lady Panthers' program, Melanie led Davenport to a fourth place finish in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) during the regular season and the Panthers then finished third in the WHAC Tourney. In the spring of 2012, her team set an 18-hole scoring record and a 36-hole scoring record. She coached one 1st Team All-WHAC performer and had three named All-WHAC Academic and Daktronics NAIA Women's Golf Scholar Athletes. She followed it up with a record-breaking campaign in 2012-13 in which the team set a new school record for an 18-hole round of 335 at the Bump Invitational in the spring. The Panthers finished third in the WHAC Tourney in the spring, missing the school 18-hole record by two shots and the 36-hole record by one shot. Loughin coached five All-WHAC Academic Athletes and four Daktronics NAIA Women's Golf Scholar Athletes as well. She was also voted as the WHAC Champions of Character Coach for Womens Golf. The 2013-14 campaign brought even more records for the women's golf program as they set the school mark for an 18-hole round (333) and 36-hole round (663) both of which were set at the Crusaders Classic at Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Mich. Davenport also claimed its first ever invitational win as they won the ONU Invitational during the spring campaign. The team also posted its lowest WHAC score in program history (337) at Sunnybrook CC. Loughin coached two All-WHAC Academic Athletes and two Daktronics NAIA Women's Golf Scholar Athletes. 2014-15 proved to be Loughin's best year yet. The team again watched as three records fell. The new 18 hole record of 323 and the new 36 hole record of 647 were set at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational. The team also set a new 54 hole scoring record of 1024 at the Grand Canyon University Invitational. The Panthers had three invitational wins at the Furniture City Classic, the Illinois College Spring Invite and the Kalamazoo College Steven Tyler Intercollegiate. For the first time ever in program history, Loughin led a team that had all players with season averages of 89 or better. The team finished with their yearly average at 343.8, which was the lowest in program history. At the conclusion of the season in May, Loughin saw her program with its best ever Golfstat National Relative Ranking of 49. Continuing the trend, the 2015-16 season was record breaking yet again. The team set four new school records in the fall or 2015 and the spring of 2016. The new 18 hole school record was set at 314 at the Furniture City Classic in September. This same month, the team set a new WHAC low score of 319 and the new 36 hole record of 646 at the UNOH Invitational. In April at the WHAC Championship the team set the new 54 hole record with a score of 972, beating the old record by 52 strokes. Loughin coached one WHAC All Conference Honorable Mention team member and one All-WHAC Academic team member. Loughin was also voted Champions of Character Coach in the fall of 2015. The Panthers had two invitational wins at the Furniture City Classic and the Kalamazoo College Steven Tyler Intercollegiate. The team concluded the season with a 334.74 average, the lowest ever in program history. In May 2016, the program saw a Golfstat National Relative Ranking of 45, the best ever in program history. She currently holds the women's course record (68) at The Mines Golf Course in Grand Rapids, Michigan and also the women's course record (65) at Railside Golf Club in Byron Center, Michigan. Melanie received her Bachelors degree in Marketing and Business Administration with a concentration in Professional Golf Management in 2001 from Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. Until the streak ended in 2013, her winning years on the Methodist team combined to form a 15-year title streak and at the time the longest current active streak (1998-2012) in any NCAA sport, and the third-longest title streak in the all-time history of NCAA athletics. After graduation, Melanie spent 2002 as a member of the Futures Golf Tour, the official developmental tour for the LPGA.
