Brett Dietz

Head Coach

Brett Dietz joined the DePauw University football coaching staff in August of 2010 as a part-time receivers coach and was hired full-time as the quarterbacks and receivers coach for the 2011 season. He became offensive coordinator in 2014 and was named head coach in January 2020. Career Highlights Led the NCAC's Football Staff of the Year in 2022, 2023 and 2024 after the Tigers won NCAC titles each of those years. Named the North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2021 after leading DePauw to its first NCAC title. 2025 Tigers earned program's fifth straight NCAA Division III postseason appearance and advanced to the round of 16 for the second straight year and third time in five years. 2025 Tigers won a second-round NCAA game at Wis.-Whitewater for the program's first posseason road win. Directed 2024 Tigers to a second straight 10-0 regular season and to the NCAA third round after winning a second-round game over Maryville (Tenn.). 2023 Tigers were the first in program history to go 10-0 in the regular season and made the program's third straight NCAA appearance. 2022 Tigers finished 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the NCAC and earned an NCAA postseason berth. 2021 Tigers matched a school record with nine wins and earned the program's first-ever NCAA postseason win after DePauw defeated Rose-Hulman, 26-21, in the first round Led DePauw to a 2-0 record during the spring 2021 season after the fall season was canceled due to Covid After graduating from Hanover, Dietz competed in the European Football League for the Turku Trojans of Finland where he led his team to an 11-1 record and into the championship game Played one season for the Cincinnati Marshals of the National Indoor Football League Played one season for the Louisville Fire of the Arena Football League 2 Signed with the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League  Earned co-Rookie of the Year honors after leading the team to an 8-2 record In 2010 Dietz led the Storm to Arena Bowl XXIII where he threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns in a 69-57 loss to Spokane. Coached at both the college and high school level in his off seasons Served as an assistant high school coach at three different schools Coached the defensive backs at Marian (Ind.) Scott Srnka

Associate Head Coach

Ryan McElwain

Assistant Coach

Ryan McElwain joined the DePauw staff in March 2024. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS The 2024 Tigers led Division III in rushing defense by allowing just 32.9 rushing yards per game and were third in total defense (223.5). DePauw was second with 4.25 sacks per game and 11th in scoring defense (12.3) Served as defensive coordinator at Franklin College (2018-24) Coached the defensive backs and defensive tackles for the Grizzlies Was Franklin's interim head coach (November-December 2019) Defensive coordinator at Kalamazoo College (2013-18) where he also coached the defensive backs Was a graduate assistant at Kalamazoo from 2009-11 A football strength and conditioning intern at Western Michigan in 2011 Served as running backs coach at DePauw in 2008 and was assistant coach for Franklin Central High School in 2008 A 2008 DePauw graduate where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and management Captain of 2007 DePauw football team and was recipient of the team's Ken Hollan Memorial Award and was named to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll All-conference in track and field and was the 2008 shot put champion Master of Arts in sports management from Western Michigan in 2012

Chris Rutledge, Jr.

Christopher Rutledge, Jr., joined the DePauw football staff as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach during the summer of 2021 PRIOR TO DEPAUW Served as  head coach and offensive line coach at American Heritage School Delray (Fla.) since February 2020 A 2008 graduate of the University of Miami, Rutledge played for the Hurricanes and was the team's most improved player recipient in 2006 and 2008 In May 2009, he participated in the Baltimore Ravens mini camp before playing two preseason games with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League Rutledge finished the 2009 season in Canada on the British Columbia Lions practice roster Following a season as a volunteer offensive line coach at Lake Worth (Fla.) High School, Rutledge played for the Tri-Cities Fever in Kennewick, Wash., of the Indoor Football League Rutledge earned a master's degree from Florida Atlantic University in 2018 where he served as a graduate assistant and offensive line coach for four seasons From there he moved on to a co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach position at Fort Scott Junior College in Fort Scott, Kan., before taking on a similar role at Palm Beach Central High School in Wellington, Fla.
