Amy Mallon

Head Coach

Mallon. Mallons passion for playing and coaching the game of basketball has been at the heart of the programs success during the Dillon-era at Drexel. Charged with forging Drexels defense, Mallon has risen to the task of galvanizing an often-undersized squad into a formidable defensive adversary for opponents, leading the Dragons to program records for points allowed per game in two straight seasons from 2011-13. Mallon also carries a significant amount of the responsibilities for scheduling for the team. More than just her knowledge of the game and its players, what Mallon brings to the Drexel locker room on a daily basis is the attitude of a champion. This contagious confidence comes from her successful background as a player and coach at all levels of the game. It now pervades a team that won its first conference championship in 2009, won the WNIT in 2013 and went to the Postseason WNIT in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016, and has experience unparalleled levels of success since Mallons arrival. Mallon came to Drexel in 2004 after coaching stints at Saint Josephs and Villanova University and as a coach and assistant athletics director at Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pa. Mallon also enjoyed success as a professional, playing in the now defunct American Basketball League and in Luxembourg. Mallon also suited up for the Irish National Team during the 2001 European Championships. Her playing career has earned her numerous accolades including a 2002 induction into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame and enshrinement in the halls of fame of Howard County Maryland and Mt. Hebron High School in Ellicott City, Md. Her start in coaching came in 1994 when she took an assistant coaching position at Division III Rosemont College. After one season with the Ramblers, Mallon joined Harry Perrettas staff at Villanova and helped guide the Wildcats, who were led by All-Big East forward Denise Dillon, to a 21-8 record and a Big 5 Championship in the 1995-96 season. She returned to her alma mater, Saint Josephs, the following season and, as an assistant coach, helped bring the Hawks both Atlantic 10 and Big 5 titles after finishing with a 26-5 mark. Mallon continued to produce championship teams as a coach when she took over as head coach at the prestigious Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pa. In addition to serving as head coach of the girls basketball and softball teams, Mallon also took on responsibilities as the assistant director of athletics. In her fifth season at the helm of the womens basketball team, Mallon led Episcopal to 17-6 record, one of its best finishes ever, and a trip to the Inter-Ac Championship game. In her playing days, Mallon was one of the Colonial Athletic Associations all-time greats. She helped lead the Richmond Spiders to back-to-back conference championships in 1990 and 1991 and was named to All-Conference teams in both seasons and also made the CAA All-Defensive team in 1991. Mallon helped lead the Spiders to three consecutive post-season appearances, including two NCAA bids, and a 72-18 record during her three seasons with the team. Her experience as a member of one of the last teams to defeat Old Dominion in a conference tournament, proved to be a rallying point for the 2009 Dragons team when they upended the Lady Monarchs in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament, ending what had been a 17-year reign by ODU in conference tournament play. Mallon transferred to Saint Josephs in 1993 for her senior season and put together one of the best single seasons in the history of Philadelphia Big 5 womens basketball. Mallon led the Hawks to a 21-8 record, a Big 5 Championship and was named the leagues Player of the Year. She was also an All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection, a member of the Academic All-District team and an Honorable Mention All-American. After graduating from Saint Josephs with a bachelors degree in sociology, a masters in health education and 1,384 career points on the basketball court, Mallon played professionally in Luxembourg for the DBBLs Résidence de Walferdang franchise. When the American Basketball League was born, Mallon returned to Philadelphia to play for the citys franchise, the Rage. On Dillons staff, Mallon serves as her top sounding board, in-game strategist, recruiter and is in charge of the teams defensive preparation. In this capacity, Mallon has coached Drexel teams that have three times set new single-season marks for scoring defense and twice broken single-game records for defensive stinginess. In addition to her on-court expertise, Mallon has played a pivotal role in the growth of the Drexel program internationally. Her recruiting efforts have helped to bring top-level talent to Drexel from around the globe. She was integral in the recruitment and coaching of Gabriela Marginean, a Romanian-native who was the 2009 CAA Player of the Year, a three-time First Team All-CAA selection and the leagues Rookie of the Year in 2006-07 and the first Drexel player to be drafted in the WNBA. In addition, her efforts have also helped to procure players hailing from Sweden, Slovakia, Belgium, Lithuania, Spain, the Ivory Coast, the Czech Republic and England. Mallon has had her finger on the pulse of collegiate womens basketball for two decades, playing as a Nike-sponsored athlete and working as a representative and consultant for the company from 1997-2001. She has been an ambassador for the game since her playing days, speaking at schools and clinics throughout the nation since 1993. Her passion for the game continues to inspire new generations of student-athletes to strive for success.     Amy Mallon Associate Head Women's Basketball Coach x-1937 Twitter: DUTwinDragons Coaching Drexel University Associate Head Coach (2007-present) Drexel University Assistant Coach (2004-2006) Episcopal Academy Assistant AD/Basketball Coach (1997-2004) Saint Josephs University Assistant Coach (1996-97) Villanova University Assistant Coach (1995-96) Rosemont College Head Coach (1994-95) Playing Career Irish Senior National Team (2001) Philadelphia Rage (1998) Résidence de Walferdang, Luxembourg (1993) Saint Josephs (1993) Big 5 Championship Big 5 Player of the Year First Team All-Atlantic 10 Honorable Mention All-American GTE District Academic All-American Richmond (1990-91) Back-to-Back CAA Champions (1990, 1991) NCAA Tournament (1990, 1991) All-CAA (1990, 1991) CAA All-Defensive Team (1991) Career Accolades Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame (02) Coached Episcopal Academy to 2002 Inter-Ac Championship game Helped coach Saint Josephs to first A-10 Championship in 1997 Howard County Hall of Fame Mt. Stacy Weiss

Associate Head Coach

McCullough returns to Denise Dillon's staff for her ninth season, and her fifth as an assistant coach. McCullough, who spent her first four seasons as the coordinator of basketball operations, earned a position as an assistant coach prior to the 2012-13 campaign, helping guide the Dragons to the 2013 WNIT Championship. Beginning in July, 2015, McCullough also assumed duties as the recruiting coordinator for the women's basketball program. A 2008 Drexel graduate, McCullough completed her playing career that year and joined Dillon's staff. For four years, she was responsible for day-to-day operations of the office as well as coordinating many elements of the teams travel and practice schedule. McCullough assumed a new role within the program prior to the 2012-13 season. Her leadership ability and familiarity with the program made her a natural addition to Dillons staff in an assistant's position, and has already proven invaluable in recruiting. She also continues to help facilitate team travel and meal arrangements, as well as practice schedules and equipment distribution. During her playing career, McCullough, was one of Coach Dillons hardest working players. After joining the team as a walk-on in 2004-05, McCullough steadily improved each season. She worked her way back from a knee injury as a junior to rejoin the team. As a senior, McCullough earned the teams Spirit/Leadership Award. She stepped in as a starter in the backcourt when Andrea Peterson went down with an injury four games into the season. After starting just nine games in career to that point, McCullough started in 24 of the 25 contests in which she played as a senior and bested her career totals in scoring, assists, rebounds and steals while averaging 25 minutes per game. McCullough graduated with a bachelors degree in business administration with a concentration in legal studies and a minor in psychology.
