Ray Goon
Head Coach
Goon, now in his 20 th season as head coach, has overseen the program since June of 1996 when Drexel reinstituted the womens soccer program. He has seen Drexels rapid rise from restarting a varsity program to now competing for a championship in one of the top conferences in the nation. Last season, the team finished 9-9 overall with a 3-6 record in conference play. Under Goons direction, Vanessa Kara started her career in University City off strong with a record-breaking season that led to her being named Drexels first-ever CAA Rookie of the Year. Kara also earned a spot on Second Team All-CAA and the All-Rookie squad, while Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausbøll was named to Third Team All-Conference. Kara would also go on to earn Third Team NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region recognition after a standout year in which she totaled a program-best 11 goals and 25 points in a single season. Goons squad put in work off the field, as well, as 25 student-athletes were honored with the CAA Commissioners Academic Award for achieving a 3.2 GPA or higher either in-season or cumulatively on the year. In 2014, Goon led the Dragons to their second CAA playoff appearance in program history after going 7-8-3 on the regular season. Drexel went unbeaten in eight consecutive games through the middle of the season during which time the defense maintained a six-game shut-out streak. The Dragons took six matches to overtime and played a total of 11 overtime periods over the course of the year. One of those games resulted in Drexels first-ever victory over William & Mary on the Tribes home turf. Under Goons direction, Melissa Chapman earned First Team All-CAA for the third consecutive year making her the first womens soccer player in program history to accomplish this feat. Also recognized as All-Conference alongside Chapman was Megan Hammaker who earned Second Team honors, Lauren Stollar who was named to the Third Team, and Madison Dunn who earned a spot on the All-Rookie squad. In 2013, the team finished 7-10-1 and 3-5 in CAA play. Drexel earned a victory over new conference opponent College of Charleston and also secured CAA wins against Hofstra and UNCW. Melissa Chapman was named to First Team All-CAA, while Eve Badana earned Second Team recognition, Alyssa Findlay received Third Team honors and Shyanne Kimbrough earned a spot on the All-Rookie team. Chapman was also named a Third Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region performer. Goons squad had a record-breaking season in 2012. The Dragons set the school mark by winning 13 matches on the way to a 13-3-3 season. Goons team finished 7-2-1 in CAA play and had 22 points. Both the seven wins and the 22 points were the most-ever by a Drexel womens soccer team. Drexel earned the second seed and a bye in the CAA Championships. It was the first time the Dragons ever qualified for the playoffs since joining the league back in 2002. For his efforts, Goon picked up the 2012 CAA Coach of the Year Award. In addition, Eve Badana was named the leagues Defensive Player of the Year and was joined on the CAA First Team by Melissa Chapman, giving the Dragons two First Team All-CAA performers for the first time. Sam Greenfield was named Second Team All-CAA while Gabby Dixon was an All-CAA Rookie team selection. The Dragons led the league in goals against average, least goals allowed and shutouts. They were undefeated at home (6-0-1) for the second straight season. In 2011, Goons Dragons had at the time their finest year since becoming a member of the CAA. Drexel finished with 15 points and had a 4-4-3 record in CAA play. The Dragons narrowly missed earning the programs first-ever bid to the conference tournament, finishing just one point shy of qualifying. Goons team went undefeated at home (5-0-3) for the first time in school history. Drexel also had three players earn All-CAA accolades for the first time. Eve Badana and Biz Matta were named All-CAA Second Team, while Jenna Lindsay, the schools all-time leading goal scorer was a Third Team pick. Badana was also named to the All-Rookie team. Overall the Dragons finished the year with a 6-8-5 record. In 2010, the team finished 7-11-1 overall and 3-7-1 in CAA play. Drexel posted its first-ever win against Old Dominion and also had CAA victories against VCU and Towson. Jenna Lindsay was named Second Team All-CAA while Sam Greenfield was an All-Rookie team selection. Goons team earned one of the most impressive wins in the programs history early in the 2009 season. After struggling out of the gate early, the Dragons stunned No. 25 Pitt at Vidas Field, 1-0. It was the first time ever that Drexel had beaten a nationally-ranked team. During CAA play, the Dragons knocked off James Madison and Georgia State at home. Eight of the teams losses were by a goal. Four of those defeats came in overtime. Sophomore Jenna Lindsay was selected to the CAAs Second Team. The Dragons tied the then-school mark with seven wins overall and two wins in conference play in 2008. The team had two All-CAA performers for the first time since joining the league. Fifth-year standout Aleka Yiantsos, who was then the schools all-time leading scorer was a Third Team pick as was senior goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond, who holds the school record for shutouts. Jenna Lindsay, who set a school mark with 10 goals, was named to the CAA All-Rookie team. The Dragons defeated Georgia State for the first time and also knocked off Towson in CAA play. In 2007, the Dragons continued to make strides in the CAA. Drexel defeated UNC Wilmington for the first time since entering the CAA and earned a tie against James Madison, an NCAA Tournament team the previous year. Goons team finished 6-9-3 overall and 2-7-2 in the CAA despite missing the services of Yiantsos, who missed most of the season with a knee injury. The Dragons set a school record by allowing just 20 goals and compiling a 1.06 goals-against average. Goon has had five of his players named All-CAA and has had three All-Rookie selections. Bond became the first Drexel goalkeeper honored by the CAA when she was named All-CAA Third Team as a junior. Former Dragon Katie Kane was a two-time All-CAA performer. She was both a First and a Second Team All-CAA pick. In addition, Kim Chiarelli and Bond were both named to the CAA All-Rookie team as freshmen. In 2005, Goon led the Dragons to their then best season in the history of the program as the team recorded a school-record seven victories. In addition, five of Drexels nine CAA losses were one-goal matches, including four in overtime. Assigned the task of navigating the Drexel program from club status to a member of the competitive America East conference, Goon posted three wins in each of his first two seasons. In 2001, his team racked up six victories and had a 3-5-3 record in its final year in the conference. That team set a single-season school record with 29 goals. Goon arrived in West Philadelphia via Philadelphia University where he posted a 28-9-2 record from 1994-95 as the head womens soccer coach. His team captured the 1995 New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) championship and earned the programs first postseason bid with an appearance in the ECAC Championships. His efforts earned him 1995 NYCAC Coach of the Year, NSCAA Division II Regional Coach of the Year and Philadelphia Oldtimers Association Coach of the Year distinctions.
