Marcia Mecklenburg

Head Coach

Mecklenburgs tenure began at EWU in the fall of 1995, her womens team has had two All-Americans (Keisa Monterola 2012, Carolee Gutierrez 2007), 39 individual Big Sky Conference champions and 136 Big Sky All-Conference performers.   On the throws side, Mecklenburg has coached two NCAA All-Americans in the javelin -- Carolee Gutierrez in 2007 and Ryan Cole in 2001. She has also coached athletes to 10 NCAA Championship appearances. In addition, she has coached 29 individual Big Sky Conference champions and 91 Big Sky All-Conference performers. Mecklenburg took over at EWU after nine seasons as an assistant at Washington State University. At WSU, she coached All-America athletes in the shot put, discus and javelin events, including the 1987 and 1988 NCAA discus champion. Before joining the Cougar coaching staff in 1986, Mecklenburg was an assistant coach for five seasons at Montana State and also coached at Seattle Pacific. At MSU, she coached 11 all-conference athletes and a pair of national qualifiers. Mecklenburg has extensive strength and conditioning coaching experience. She was an assistant coach for the United States at the 1997 Indoor World Championships. Mecklenburg received her bachelor's degree from Seattle Pacific in 1979 and her master's degree from Montana State in 1991. She is a former state champion at Edmonds, Wash., High School, and competed four times in the AIAW National Championships in the shot put and discus while at SPU. During the course of her competitive career, Mecklenburg also competed in three Olympic trials and made three U.S. teams. As a competitor in masters' competitions in the hammer throw, she set an American record for her age group at the Nike World Masters Championship in summer 1998. Mecklenburg has a daughter, Echo. A Pacific Northwest native, Marcia Mecklenburg is now in her 22nd season as head coach of Eastern's women's track and field program in the 2016-17 school year. She coaches Eastern's throwers. Erik Rasmussen

Assistant Coach

Rasmussen was a volunteer assistant pole vault coach at Brigham Young University from 2008-2012. During his time in Provo, Utah, he coached three First-Team All-Americans and 12 NCAA Prelminary Round qualifiers. He also coached seven individual athletes to 15 total appearances at the NCAA National Championship meet. During the 2011 indoor season, Rasmussen coached four athletes who qualified for the NCAA National Championships. From 1998 to 2003, Rasmussen competed in the pole vault and decathlon for the BYU Cougars and was selected as a member of the All-MWC team. He had personal-bests of 17-4 1/2 in the pole vault, 6,319 points in the decathlon and 5,244 in the indoor heptathlon. Rasmussen is a native of Modesto, Calif. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rome, Italy. He graduated from BYU with a bachelors degree in psychology and is in the process of attaining his masters degree in exercise science. He has a wife Nicole, who also competed for the BYU track team. They have two children -- daughter Tate who was born in May of 2012 and a son Bo, born in February 2015. Erik Rasmussen is entering his fifth season as EWU's jumps and combined-events coach in the 2016-17 school year. He has a Level I USATF coaching certification and a Level II certification in jumps. Since joining the Eastern coaching staff in September of 2012, seven athletes have earned All-Big Sky honors in jumping events, including two Big Sky Champions, and have combined for 14 Eastern top ten all-time marks. Eric Allison

Allison has coached Regional and first round NCAA Division I qualifiers in 11 of the past 12 years. He coached one of Easterns most decorated athletes, Keisa Monterola, who was an NCAA All-American in 2012 and set the school records for the vault in indoor and outdoor. Monterola also holds the indoor and outdoor Big Sky Conference meet record for the pole vault, and set the Venezuelan Indoor National record during her time at Eastern. He has coached seven Big Sky Champions and 27 All-Conference performers in the pole vault. In 2005 Allison coached the men vaulters to a top-three sweep at the conference championships. He has coached all four EWU school record holders as well as several vaulters on Eastern top ten all-time list (Indoor- 10 women, six men, Outdoor- 10 women, six men). Allison also has his USA Track and Field Level I certification. As a coach at the Community College of Spokane in 2004, he coached the mens NWAACC Champion who broke the school record with a height of 16-4. Athletes coached by Allison held all school records while he coached there. In 2006 he coached two women vaulters who placed first and second at conference -- they were the only two female vaulters on the team. As a coach at Riverside High School (WA) from 1992 to 2000, he coached three state champions and several state placers. Allison grew up in Fresno, Calif., and attended the University of California at Irvine. While at Irvine, he reached a personal best of 15-6 in the vault and competed in the conference championships twice. Allison owns his own business in the Spokane area.
