Bill Buttner
Head Coach
Buttner, with the men's team reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2005-06, 2011-12 and 2012-13, three of the program's four total NCAA berths (1997-98). In addition, three individuals have been selected for NCAA Championships play under his direction, with C.J. Denmark receiving the first honor in 2007, Callum Georgallides joining in 2011 and Jeff Evanier qualifying in 2012. Buttner was named the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year in 2005 following the Tritons' third-place finish in the conference tournament. An accomplished player, Buttner spent 15 years in professional golf including six years on the PGA Tour. He had five top-10 finishes overall and played in five U.S. Opens. He then moved to the teaching ranks, having been a certified Class A PGA Professional since 1985. Through his relationships, Buttner has secured playing and practice priveleges at some of the best courses in the Bay area. The Tritons play at St. Petersburg Country Club, Vinoy Club, Feather Sound Country Club, Bayou Country Club, and Isla del Sol Country Club. The squads also practice at Mangrove Bay Golf Club. Off the course, Buttner's golfers have shined, as well. In 2009-10, the men's team led the Sunshine State Conference on the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll -- honoring student-athletes with a GPA of 3.2 or better. Along with Susan McDermott, Buttner also started the annual Matthew T. McDermott Fundraising Tournament to honor the former Eckerd golfer who tragically died in the Sept. 11 attacks. Buttner graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. He has three children: Will, Hayden and Leigh. It's not often a school can say its leader competed at the highest level, but Eckerd College can say that about head men's and women's golf head coach Bill Buttner. The former PGA Tour player will enter his 13th season leading the Tritons' men's team on the links, while he is starting his ninth season at the women's helm. The programs have reached new heights under Buttner, with the men's team reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2005-06, 2011-12 and 2012-13, three of the program's four total NCAA berths (1997-98).
