Josh Hexter

Head Coach

Hexter would be the first-ever head coach of the Phoenix womens lacrosse program, which began competition in the spring of 2014. We were looking for some essential characteristics in our search for a head womens lacrosse coach, Blank commented. Not only does Josh have head coaching experience, but he has been an integral part of developing lacrosse programs that are achieving high levels of success year in and year out. It was clear to me throughout my conversations with Josh that he is truly excited to be a head coach once again and to be part of the creation of Elon womens lacrosse. I am honored to join the Elon University family, Hexter said. I want to express my gratitude to the Elon administration and coaching staff for this amazing opportunity. It was obvious to me from the beginning that a solid foundation for excellence has been built at Elon and my job now is to extend that excellence to the women's lacrosse program. We've got a tremendous plan in place and I am looking forward to getting started. On Feb. 7, 2014, the Elon Phoenix played its first game in program history at #6 Duke and then later recorded its first win on March 1 in its first home game against St. Francis after a 16-7 final. Elon saw a successful second season after finishing with an 8-8 overall record, including wins over three programs that claimed victories over the Phoenix the previous year. The program won its first Colonial Athletic Association game on April 12, 2015, with an 8-7 final over William & Mary at Rhodes Stadium. Over the course of the season, freshman Stephanie Asher earned CAA Rookie of the Week three times, while Kelsey Dupere earned the honor once. For the second straight year, Hexter coached a newcomer to top honors as Asher was named the CAA Rookie of the Year. Asher was also selected to the All-CAA Second Team and the CAA All-Rookie Team. Elon had four other players earn all-conference honors with Rachel Ramirez earning all-league accolades for the second straight year as a member of the All-CAA Second Team. Freshmen Abby Godfrey and Alexis Zadjura were selected to the CAA All-Rookie Team, while junior Kelli Stack was named to the CAA All-Academic Team.   In the programs first competitive season, Hexter led the Phoenix to an 8-9 overall record and a 4-1 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play, finishing second in the regular-season standings. The team also went a perfect 5-0 at home in Rhodes Stadium.   Hexter was named the A-Sun Coach of the Year after the teams accomplishments in its inaugural season. A total of seven players earned all-conference honors with Sloane Kessler being named the freshman of the year. Kessler and Ramirez earned spots on the all-conference first team and were the only two freshmen to get first team accolades. Rowan Drake and Erin Murnane landed on the second team, while Olivia Fernandez and Anna Vitton joined Kessler, Ramirez and Murnane as Elon led the way with five players on the all-freshmen team. Kelli Stack also earned all-conference honors when she was named to the A-Sun Academic All-Conference Team.   During the season, Elon players earned conference player of the week honors five times. Ramirez earned the defensive player of the week title four times, the only player in the conference to earn weekly honors more than twice, while Kessler was once named the A-Sun Player of the Week. Hexter began his time at Elon following the conclusion of his eighth season with the Duke womens lacrosse program. He joined the Blue Devil staff prior to the 2005 season and was promoted to associate head coach in 2010.     Duke amassed a 119-42 record during Hexters tenure, averaging nearly 15 wins per season. Under Hexter's watch, the Blue Devils won three ACC regular season championships, as well as an ACC Tournament title, while also reaching five national semifinals (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011). Under Hexters guidance, the Duke offense consistently ranked as one of the best in the country. Since Hexter joined the Blue Devils in 2005, Duke scored 2,020 goals, averaging over 14 per contest, a jump of nearly four goals per game from the nine seasons prior to his arrival. In addition, the 2009 squad set program single-season highs for goals (313), assists (150) and points (463).   During Hexters time at Duke, the Blue Devils had a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award, an honor annually presented to the best NCAA Division I mens and womens lacrosse player, every season. In 2005, the Blue Devils Katie Chrest won the Tewaaraton and was a finalist a year later.   Prior to arriving at Duke, Hexter served as the head women's lacrosse coach at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass. While at Bridgewater State, the program totaled a 72-42 record and made a trip to the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) title game in six consecutive seasons. He led the team to two conference championships during this time. In 2003, Bridgewater made the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.   Prior to coaching at Bridgewater, Hexter coached the New England III Team in the National Tournament and in the Bay State Games. He also served as an assistant women's lacrosse coach at The College of the Holy Cross from 1996-97.   A 1995 graduate of Assumption College, he was a four-year standout defenseman on the lacrosse team, earning team captain and NECLA All-Star honors during his senior campaign. In 1995, Hexter became the first player in Assumption history to earn a spot in the East-West New England All-Star Game.   Hexter and his wife, Courtney, reside in Durham with their sons - Evan, Christopher and Nicholas - and their dog, Rosie.     Josh Hexter Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Twitter: ElonWLax Elon University Director of Athletics Dave Blank announced on April 28, 2012, that Josh Hexter would be the first-ever head coach of the Phoenix womens lacrosse program, which began competition in the spring of 2014. Dipper arrived at Elon after two years in the same role at Stetson, including time as the interim head coach. While at Stetson, Dipper saw the Hatters make back-to-back appearances in the Atlantic Sun Championship Semifinals. She also worked closely with goalkeeper Caili Guilday during the 2014 season, in which she made 210 saves, leading all Division I keepers with an 11.67 saves per game average. Dipper assumed the role of interim head coach of the Hatters after the head coach left the program in April of 2014   Prior to her coaching career, Dipper experienced a highly successful playing career at the University of Maryland. As the teams goalie, she led the Terrapins to four consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference titles. In addition, she made eight saves in goal in Marylands 2010 national championship game victory over Northwestern.   Dippers playing career at Maryland, where she earned a bachelors degree in family science, includes a pair of first team All-America seasons and a national Goalie of the Year award. She was named to the All-ACC Tournament team all four years of her career while posting a career record in goal of 75-8.   While Stetson marked Dippers first experience in full-time coaching, she is no stranger to teaching the game of lacrosse. While still a player at Maryland she worked as a coach and counselor at a number of camps and clinics. She has been an annual instructor at the Maryland Elevate Lacrosse Open Camp and has worked at elite camps in Salt Lake City, Atlanta and at Duke University.   A native of Clarksboro, N.J., Dipper not only excelled in lacrosse. She was also a member of Marylands 2008 national champion field hockey team.
