Joe Calabrese
Head Coach
Calabrese believes his philosophy on not just soccer, but life, is starting to rub off on his players. "We believe and know Endicott College is becoming one of the most special places in the country at any level to play college soccer. It's been created through hard work, time spent together, and the belief in our team culture," says Calabrese. "We're creating a special culture through a shared vision by our players, coaching staff, and alumni. We recruit excellent student-athletes, competitive guys, and young men who embody a mindset of service, self-discipline, and are committed to exceeding our program values, standards, and goals." The team culture, Calabrese says, encompasses not just soccer, but spiritual beliefs, family, academics, community service and good relationships. We hold our guys accountable for everything, whether its their studies or their play on the field. I want them to see the big picture of their college experience because if they do, it will be that much better. The soccer experience at Endicott is competitive, especially considering the parity in Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents year-in and year-out. Calabrese brings that competitive environment from game day into his practices, which run from intense 90-minute sessions to pregame walk-throughs, hoping to prepare his team for a late postseason run. "At practice, well track wins and losses, and at the end of the session, a champion will emerge. We hold 2 v 2, 4 v 4, or 8 v 8 championship formatted tournaments throughout the fall season, which we believe creates a competitive practice environment preparing our squad for a deep run into the CCC playoffs. Offseason training is equally imperative for the success of the program. "Players arent required to be in the weight room 3-to-4 days a week, but the returners have shown that they want to put the work in if they want to be a force not only in the region but at the national level as well," says Calabrese. He also emphasizes the need to work on technical skills throughout the year to improve the simple parts of the game that will seem natural come game day. Additionally, building team chemistry is a year-round focus for the men's soccer program through community service and some creative programming. "We believe in doing the extras as a soccer program. Our players play futsol in the Post Center field house during the offseason. They lift weights and complete speed workouts during the winter months and begin those workouts as early as 6:00 a.m. As a program, we've been recipients of the NSCAA Team Academic Award on numerous occasions. Our players are expected to set a new team best for overall team cumulative GPA on a yearly basis. Our team leaders organize our community service projects and collaborate with each other on new ways to serve the North Shore community and the Endicott community." Calabrese believes team chemistry is best formed by spending time together. "The members of our team live together in the residence halls throughout their playing careers. Our players eat meals together daily in the Callahan Dining Hall, attend professional games, attend Bingo nights at Endicott, go to the local cinema to watch movies, and play video games together in the residence halls." When it comes to future players, Calabrese admits that he is just looking for recruits that can pass the good-dude test. Are you willing to make the daily sacrifices to achieve success Are you willing to give back to the community Are you going to get the job done in the classroom Are you willing to put the work in on the field" "Thats the standard for our program every single year," says Calabrese.
