Matt Reid
Assistant Coach
Matt Reid enters his eighth season as assistant coach at Florida Gulf Coast University with the 2025 campaign. The recruiting coordinator for head coach Dave Tollett, Reid works primarily with infielders and also assists with hitting. In his time at FGCU, the Eagles have captured two Atlantic Sun Conference regular season titles and have had six players selected in the MLB Draft. In 2024, the Eagles clinched a share of the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship. Designated hitter Ian Farrow was named American Baseball Coaches Association Second Team All-American, in addition to picking up First Team All-ASUN honors. The 2024 season also saw Robert Moya become the first FGCU baseball player to hit three home runs in a game at Swanson Stadium, in addition to setting a new school record with six RBI and 14 total bases. Seven FGCU hitters would be honored by the conference at the conclusion of the regular season. In addition to Farrow's First Team nod, Mac Moise was named to the ASUN Second Team, Jacob Lojewski and Robert Moya were named ASUN Third Team, and Evan Dempsey, Javier Gorostola, and Charles Davalan were each named ASUN All-Freshman. Reid helped the Eagles to eye-popping numbers in 2023. FGCU led the country in three statistical categories: home runs per game (2.37), slugging percentage (.592), and runs per game (9.6). The Eagles went 42-18 that year, and as a team and individuals, broke 30 different program records. Three Eagle infielders - Joe Kinker, Edrick Felix, and Alejandro Figueredo - were each named All-Americans. The team hit 142 homers, breaking the school record by 48 and very nearly led the country in this category as well. The Green & Blue's 550 RBIs in 2023 re-sets the single-season school record by 100 over the 2022 squad. And FGCU drew a single-season program record 310 walks (305, 2017), and FGCU's 1,252 total bases in 2023 were an incredible 221 total bases over 2010's previous record. FGCU batters were plunked 126 times by pitches in 2023, 14 more than the 112 by the 2022 team. The Eagles also recorded a single-season record 35 sacrifice flies (34, 2013) In 2022, Reid helped Alejandro Figueredo to an All-American season as the third-baseman hit .392 with 13 home runs, 21 doubles, and 62 RBI. The Eagles had three three other players named All-ASUN in Joe Kinker, Brian Ellis, and Ian Farrow in addition to Harrison Povey who was named a Freshman All-American. One of Reid's greatest accomplishments on the Green and Blue staff was helping to develop Cameron Krzeminski, who became the team's starting second-baseman. Under Reid's tutelage, the senior - who had never played in the infield - racked up 18 assists and posted a perfect fielding percentage. Reid also worked closely with senior shortstop Richie Garcia, who finished the season with 355 career assists, the seventh-most of any player in program history. Reid came to Southwest Florida following a stint as a scout in New England and nine seasons at Army West Point. During his time along the Hudson River, Reid was part of six Patriot League championships and three NCAA Regional appearances, including a 2009 Regional Final against Texas. Included in that stretch was a 33-19 record in 2014 with a 15-5 mark in conference play as a head coach that led to the Black Knights winning a share of the Patriot League title. Reid served as Army West Point's head baseball coach from 2014-16 and was the assistant coach for the five years prior. Over the course of his tenure, Reid helped Army West Point achieve single-season records in several categories including fielding percentage (.975), batting average (.329), home runs (57), runs scored (446), and RBIs (408). The team's fielding percentage was ranked 32nd in the nation in 2012. In addition, Reid was instrumental in the development or recruitment of 12 draftees including Chris Rowley, who became the first Army West Point player to ever be called up to the Majors when he debuted for the Blue Jays in 2017. Along with the success of Rowley, Reid also helped coach three All-Americans in Kevin McKague, Clint Moore, and Zach Price, with the latter winning the Gold Glove in 2012 as the country's best defensive second baseman at the Division I level. Prior to Army West Point, Reid was on staff for two seasons at UNC Asheville assisting the Bulldogs to a Big South title in 2006 and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Coinciding with his time at Asheville, he also spent time as the coach of the Peninsula Pilots in the Coastal Plains Summer Baseball League, guiding the club to a 72-45 record over two summers and a championship game appearance each year. Throughout his coaching career, Reid has made various stops at programs across the country. In 2005, he coached at Old Dominion. In 2004, he was a graduate assistant for VCU while pursuing his master's in sport leadership. During that time, he was a baseball operations assistant for Dave Littlefield, the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. During his time with Louisburg JC and Virginia Military Institute (2002, 2003), he worked with Billy Godwin, currently a scout with the NY Yankees, and Tom Slater, the assistant hitting coach for the NY Mets. Reid played four years of college baseball at the University of Richmond where he was the starting second baseman as a junior and senior. The Spiders won the CAA title in 1998 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament in 1999, marking the second-straight year that the Spiders were national contenders. He served as team captain as a senior. Reid is also the proud father of his 2-year old son, Tyler. Updated 4/30/23
