Ryan Horning
Head Coach
Horning enters his fourth year at the helm of the Franklin & Marshall baseball program in the 2017 season. In 2016, the Diplomats faced off against Division III's No. 19 ranked strength of schedule and was in contention for a conference playoff spot up until the final week of the regular season. Offensively and defensively, F&M put together one of the best seasons among CC institutions during conference play, placing third with a .295 team batting average and third with a .963 team fielding percentage. Horning's second year at the helm was his most successful to date as he led the team to a 28-13 record, good for the programs highest win total since 2006 and the fourth-most in program history, on his way to earning Centennial Conference (CC) Coach of the Year honors. The Diplomats garnered their 10th all-time CC Tournament appearance and the right to host their first playoff contest since 2008, advancing all the way to the conference title game. F&Ms bid for its seventh CC Title fell short; however, the Diplomats had one more memorable win under their belt, downing Frostburg St., the nation's No. 2 team, the following week by a 4-1 score. One of the most balanced teams in the CC after placing fourth in both batting average (.297) and ERA (3.60), the 2015 squad left its mark throughout the program's single-season record book, placing seventh in hits (406), seventh in doubles (72), ninth in home runs (12), second in stolen bases (103), 10th in ERA (3.60), fourth in shutouts (4) and third in fielding percentage (.960). In 2014, he guided the Diplomats to 14 wins in his first season, as F&Ms offense was among the leaders in the CC in several categories, producing the third-most hits in the conference (354), stealing the second-most bases (66) and hitting for the fifth-highest average (.283). Horning was announced as the 47th coach in the history of the program on June 24, 2013, after five seasons as an assistant coach with the Diplomats. The Diplomats posted a record of 101-95-2 during Horning's tenure as an assistant and advanced to the Centennial Conference (CC) playoffs three times, claiming the fourth CC title in program history in 2013. The Diplomats concluded the 2013 campaign with a record of 23-21 and captured their first CC title since 2006, advancing to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the fourth time in school history. Horning has been firmly entrenched in all aspects of the program during his time as an assistant, serving as the defensive coach for both infielders and outfielders while also leading recruiting efforts and off-season camp operations. The Diplomats have consistently proven to be one of the top fielding teams in the CC under Horning's guidance, ranking among the top four in the conference in fielding percentage in each of his seasons as an assistant and breaking the single-season record for turned double plays last spring. "I'm honored and excited to be the next head baseball coach at F&M, and I look forward to continuing the program's rich history of excellence," said Horning. "We have a special group of players here at F&M, and I look forward to building off our championship run of 2013." A 2004 graduate of St. Lawrence University, Horning joined the staff at F&M as an assistant coach in 2009 after coaching stints at Cornell University, St. John Fisher College and Longwood University. After one year at Division I Longwood, he served as an assistant at St. John Fisher, where he helped guide the Cardinals to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. From there, Horning moved back to the Division I level to Cornell for one year. Horning was also a coach for the Watertown Wizards of the New York Collegiate Baseball League for two summers in 2007 and 2008, including one season as head coach, and served as head coach of the Albany Dutchmen of the NYCBL in 2009. Additionally, he guided the Syracuse 16-year-old All-Star Team to the Babe Ruth World Series Championship in 2004, making him the youngest coach to achieve the feat. He led his Syracuse squad to the Babe Ruth World Series in two of his three years as the head coach.
