Carl Schnabel

Head Coach

Schnabel, the mentor of the men's and women's track teams at Franklin & Marshall, is a native of Lancaster. He returned to his hometown to coach the Diplomat track teams in the summer of 2003 and currently resides in the city with his wife, Jennifer, and their five children. Last season saw continued success for both the men's and women's track & field teams. On the men's side, F&M tallied 77 points to place third at the Centennial Conference (CC) Championships for the second consecutive season. The Diplomats grabbed eight medals to equal their haul from the 2015 championships, earning three gold medals, four silvers, and one bronze on the weekend. The women's team won five medals at the Centennial Conference (CC) Outdoor Championships and sent an athlete to the NCAA Championships for the seventh consecutive year. Rebecca Swisher '16 collected her fourth outdoor CC Title and eighth overall, including indoor competition, breaking her school record with an effort of 3.84 meters (12'-7.25") to win by more than a foot. With that victory, she became just the second athlete in conference history to win eight championships in one event.  In 2015, the mens team accumulated 100 points to place third and tie its best finish in the outdoor championship since 1996. The Diplomats won eight medals that included four gold, two silver, and two bronze. The womens side saw several school records fall, led by Swisher who placed seventh in the pole vault at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 21 with a height of 12'-05.50" to earn All-America honors for the second consecutive outdoor season. At the Delaware Open on April 11, Livia Meneghin '15 set the school record in the shot put, as the senior's distance of 41'-05.00" broke the previous F&M mark of 40'-11.50."  During the 2014 season, several school records fell under Schnabels watch. On the mens side, Leo Generali, Derek Pawlush, Luk Olenginski and Greg Olenginski shattered the F&M and CC Championship 4x800 meter relay record with a time of 7:40.46. On the womens side, Rebecca Swisher and Maya Jackson both set F&M records at the CC Championships as Swishers height of 12-02.50 was good for gold, while Jacksons shot put throw of 40-11.50 earned her fifth-place points. Swishers vault of 12-01.50 at the ECAC Championships earned her third place points and a trip to the NCAA Championships in Delaware, Ohio. At the championships, Swishers best height of 12-01.50 was good for eighth and made her an All-American, to become the first F&M womens field athlete to earn the honor.  In 2013, Schnabel coached Nils Michaelis and Sheena Crawley to the NCAA Championships, helping both of them to All-America honors. Michaelis claimed the All-America nod for the second time in his career, while Crawley earned her sixth track & field All-America accolade at the spring outdoor championships.  A graduate of Upper Perkiomen High School where he played football, wrestled, and ran track, Schnabel continued his athletic and academic career at the University of Delaware. While earning a B.A. in history, Schnabel played football and ran track for the Blue Hens.  With over a quarter century's worth of experience in track and field, both as an athlete and a coach, Schnabel has worked with many of the country's premier coaches. At Kutztown, he assisted Brian Mondschein in a revitalization of the track & field program, helping the Bears capture 12 championships between 1997 and 2001.  His instructional creativity, demonstration of necessary techniques, and his knowledge of weight and strength training fundamentals have helped his athletes realize their maximum potential in athletics. His experiences as a student-athlete and high school teacher defined his enduring commitment to helping his student-athletes excel in academics as well.  Schnabel started his coaching career at Biola University in La Mirada, California where he served as assistant cross country and track and field coach from 1988-1993. He also coached at Lehigh University from 1993 through 1997.
