Zack Thomsen

Head Coach

Zack Thomsen enters his third season as the school's 15th head men's basketball coach in program history and the second to take helm as a member of Division II and the Mountain East Conference.  2024-25 marked a breakthrough year for FSU, as Thomsen guided the Bobcats to a nine-win improvement from the previous year and their first double-digit win season in five years. Frostburg ended the year 12-17 overall with an 8-12 mark in conference play, their most-ever wins in the MEC and their second consecutive conference tournament appearance. A key to the team's success was a high-scoring offense that ranked sixth all-time in program history and blew past the program's three-point record. Under his direction, Jaden Baker and Koby Baptiste both earned All-MEC honors, the first time that FSU has had two players named all-conference at the Division II level.  Thomsen's first season at the helm marked a growing period for the program, welcoming in several new players as a part of a roster turnover. At a 3-26 overall record and 2-18 mark in the MEC, the team was able to make their first-ever Mountain East Tournament appearance. A spark from Thomsen implementing his system was the team making the second-most three-pointers and scoring the eighth-most points in program history.    Thomsen arrived at FSU having been the head coach at the State University of New York at Delhi for seven seasons. During his tenure, he compiled 123 total wins, including reaching at least 20 victories in each of the past three seasons. In 2022-23, SUNY Delhi won the NAC Tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The team had also won the NAC West Division title in each of the past two seasons.     While at Delhi, Thomsen was named conference coach of the year three times and helped oversee the school's transition from USCAA and NAIA to full-fledged NCAA Division III members. Under his direction, six times his players have been selected as All-Americans. In addition to his responsibilities as the head men's basketball coach, he also served as the school's head strength and conditioning coach.    Prior to SUNY Delhi, Thomsen spent time in the region as an assistant at Shepherd University while they were members of the Mountain East Conference. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Le Moyne College and helped them to an NCAA Division II Tournament at-large bid. Thomson began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Onondaga Community College from 2010-12.    Thomsen earned his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Coaching Education at West Virginia Institute of Technology. While there as an athlete, he was a team captain, Mid-South Academic All-Conference and won the Baisi Classic Academic Award both years. He later got his masters at Le Moyne College in General Professional Education.   2024-25 12-17 Overall, 8-12 MEC 7th Place MEC | MEC Tournament Appearance 2023-24 3-26 Overall, 2-18 MEC 10th Place MEC | MEC Tournament Appearance
