Associate Head Coach

Dalzell was named NCAA West Region Mens Assistant Coach of the Year for his development of the mens distance program.  That development carried over to the 2014 outdoor track season where the mens distance group outscored all of the other teams at the Northwest Conference meet, scoring 48 points compared to 36 for the next closest team, and included conference champions Will Lawrence in the 800m and Joseph Pia in the 1500m. Six GFU distance runners earned all-conference honors Will Lawrence (1  800m), Joseph Pia (1  1500m), Katie Dyk (2  800m), Kyle Dreibelbis (2 - Steeplechase), Kody Tarbell (2  10,000m), and Emily Painter (2  10,000m).  A number of the distance runners have also broken into the top 10 all-time GFU performance lists with the following marks - Will Lawrence (1:51.25 800m)  2 all time, Emily Painter (36:10.87 10,000m)  2 all-time, Courtney Hochstetler (11:46.74 Steeplechase) 2 all-time, Joseph Pia (14:50.24 5,000m)  5 all-time, Katie Dyk (2:15.77 800m)  6 all-time, Sarah MacKenzie (2:18.09 800m)  9 all-time, Emily Painter (4:45.06 1500m)  10 all-time, Kody Tarbell (32:09.74 10,000m) 10 all-time. Prior to coming to George Fox, Dalzell inaugurated and coached the cross country and track and field programs at Concordia for seven years (2005-12). In that time, he led the Cavaliers to fifteen Cascade Collegiate Conference titles, winning seven in a row in men's track & field, six in women's track & field, one in women's cross country, and one in men's cross country, as well as the NAIA regional title in men's cross country in 2006. In 2011, the women's outdoor track and field team won the NAIA National Championship while the men finished fifth. In his final year at Concordia, women's outdoor track came in second in the nation, men's outdoor track finished fourth, men's indoor track finished third , women's indoor track was seventh, women's cross country finished placed eighth, and men's cross country finished 19th. This accounted for over 70% of the NAIA National Director's Cup points for the university. At Concordia, he produced 24 NAIA individual national champions, 165 All-Americans, and 23 NAIA Scholar-Athletes. He was the NAIA Women's Track and Field National Coach of the Year in 2011, and was named regional or conference Coach of the Year 17 times. Concordia was the third collegiate program Dalzell started, having also launched programs at Cascade College in 1996-97 and at Northwest Nazarene, where he coached from 1999-2002. At NNU, Dalzell was named the National Christian College Athletic Association Men's Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 2001 after his men's team at NNU won the NCCAA National Championship with all seven runners finishing in the top 14, making the entire team All-Americans. He produced 19 NCCAA and NAIA All-American at NNU and 16 NAIA or NCCAA Scholar-Athletes. He also had three NAIA All-Americans at Cascade. In all, Dalzell was named conference, regional, or national Coach of the Year a total of 25 times, 18 in seven years at Concordia and five times while at NNU, and produced 39 Scholar-Athletes and 187 All-Americans. Also a successful high school coach with 10 years of track and field experience at that level in the Portland (Ore.) and Bend (Ore.) areas, Dalzell was twice named Intermountain Conference Coach of the Year while at Bend High School. Taking the George Fox post brought Dalzell 'full circle', as the Bruins' coach recalled, "My first college coaching experience was here in the early 1990's, and then-coach Wes Cook was one of my early mentors who had a significant impact on my development as a coach. My wife went to George Fox, we were married in Newberg, our first child was born here, and my wife's parents still live here." Coach Smith forms another connection to the university with Dalzell, who explained, "I was an assistant here during John's first two years as a college athlete, and his first coaching experience was as an assistant with me for a year when I started the program at Cascade. We have been good friends ever since. I appreciate so much his hard work with the athletes here." When Dalzell was first approached for the George Fox position, he was immediately intrigued with the possibility, saying that "I thought it would be a great fit. George Fox's strong Christian background, the development of its athletic department, nice facilities, and strong reputation in general made it, in my mind, an attractive place to be. "We are excited about bringing Randy back in a full-time capacity as both a coach and an instructor," said George Fox director of athletics Craig Taylor when he announced the hiring of Dalzell. "His record as a college coach and his knowledge of track and cross country are amazing, and we are glad to give him this opportunity to build a similar success story with the Bruins. His strong Christian faith and his outstanding ability to relate to student-athletes make him an ideal fit for our institution and our athletic program." In addition to his coaching duties, Dalzell serves in the health and human performance department at George Fox, teaching subjects such as lifetime fitness and tennis. Dalzell received a bachelor's degree with honors in secondary education/mathematics from Columbia Christian College in 1987, where he played basketball and soccer and was named the school's Scholar-Athlete of the Year while earning an NAIA Academic All-America Award.  He did post-graduate studies at Abilene Christian University in biology, Oregon State University in exercise physiology, the University of Puget Sound in physical therapy, and Seattle Pacific University in education. He attained his master of education degree from Linfield College in 1995, and is currently working on a doctorate in education leadership, which he hopes to complete at George Fox. As a sidelight, Dalzell owns and operates the Athletic Transportation Services, LLC, providing charter bus transportation for numerous college sports teams in the area. In his spare time, he enjoys running, playing "catch with the kids", and coaching youth league basketball. Dalzell lives in Damascus, Ore., with his wife Charlene and their three children.

John Smith

Coach

Smith was named the NWC Coach of the Year. The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Smith the West Region Womens Coach of the Year for the Bruins dramatic improvement, climbing to third in the NWC, in 2009.  The honor was repeated in 2010 when the Bruins finished a close second to Willamette, and again in 2012 as the Bruins won the second of three straight conference championships.  This past year, Smith was honored as the West Region Womens Indoor Coach of the Year as the Bruins were the No. 1-ranked team in the region and No. 21 nationally entering the NCAA Indoor National Championships. With Smith at the helm, the George Fox men have finished in a tie for 18th (16 points) in the 2007 NCAA National Championships, tied for 53rd (5 points) in 2009, tied for 65th (3 points) in 2010, and tied for 57th (3 points) in 2011.  The Bruin women have tied for 53rd (5 points) in the NCAA Championships in 2009, tied for 19th (10 points) in 2011, tied for 15th (13 points) in 2012, and finished alone in 14th (18 points) in 2013.  The women tied for 43rd (4 points) in the 2013 NCAA Indoor National Championships. In 2014, George Fox finished tied for 42nd (6 points) and in 2015 the women finished tied for 22nd (11 points) and the men finished tied 61st (3 points). During his 10 years as head coach, Smith has produced 10 NCAA All-American men and 15 All-American women, including four national champions (Joel Krebs, 2007 mens javelin; Irene Johnson, 2011 womens 100 hurdles; Alexis Arnold, 2012 womens heptathlon; and Beth Stam, 2013 womens javelin).  The Bruins have had 21 men and 43 women participate in the NCAA Championships during his tenure.  Ben Dillow was named the USTFCCCA West Region Mens Athlete of the Year in 2008, Beth Stam was the West Region Womens Field Athlete of the Year in both 2010 and 2013, and Emily Wyatt won both the West Region Womens Indoor Track and Indoor Field Athlete of the Year awards in 2013. Under Smiths leadership, George Fox men have earned 104 All-Conference honors and 22 NWC championships, while Bruin women have garnered 185 All-NWC awards and have won 45 NWC events.  Irene Johnson was named the Womens Track Co-Athlete of the NWC Championships Meet in 2010, Nate Dillow the Mens Field Athlete of the Meet in 2011, Beth Stam the Womens Field Athlete of the Meet in 2011 and 2013, and Alyssa Turner the Womens Track Athlete of the Meet in 2012. Charity Arn was named Women's Field Athlete of the Meet in 2014 and again in 2015. Rachael Kraske was named Women's Track Athlete of the Meet in 2015.  Smith also served as the head coach of the George Fox mens and womens cross country programs for six seasons before turning over the reins of those programs to Randy Dalzell, a multi-honored coach at Cascade College, Northwest Nazarene University and Concordia University-Portland.  Dalzell was an assistant coach at George Fox for two years while Smith was a student-athlete, and Smith served as an assistant under Dalzell for a year at Cascade in 1997. A native of Lakeside, Ore., Smith was a football and track athlete at North Bend (Ore.) High School, earning all-state and district honors in both sports and setting a school record in the triple jump. Coming to George Fox in 1992, he changed his focus from the jumps to the challenges of the decathlon. He was a national qualifier in the decathlon three times and twice in the pole vault, claiming NAIA All-America status in the decathlon in both 1994 and 1995. At the time of graduation, he held top-10 marks in eight events at George Fox, including a school record in the decathlon (7,138 points) during his junior year which still stands. After completing his bachelors degree in health and human performance (fitness management emphasis) in 1996, Smith continued to compete and earned a U.S. national ranking in the decathlon. While competing for Oregon International, he won the University of Oregon Invitational and took second at the Rocky Mountain Invitational in the decathlon before a career-ending injury sidelined him from the sport. Realizing that his true dedication to the sport would best be served coaching and mentoring athletes, he began coaching the jumps and multi-events and worked to earn a masters degree in sport science, which he completed in 2003. Returning to George Fox as an assistant coach in 1998, Smith worked primarily with the Bruins jumps, javelin, and multi-event athletes. Under his tutelage, the Bruins had the NCAA Division III national runner-up in the decathlon (Ben Dillow) and the womens high jump (Michelle Forbes) in 2005. The team followed that up with three All-American decathletes (Seth Harris, fifth; Josh Priester, seventh; and Ryan Forbes, eighth) in 2006. The jumps group earned multiple Northwest Conference championships in the long jump (six), triple jump (six), and high jump (three). Smith had 31 NCAA Division III national meet qualifiers, three national runner-ups, and 12 All-Americans during his stint as an assistant. The success of our program is a true testament to the athletes we have, says Smith. I am continually amazed at the level of dedication and work the athletes are willing to put in to reach that next level. The team is also very Christ-centered and provides a family-like atmosphere that breeds success. We work hard and have fun doing it. It is truly a blessing to be able to coach athletes in this program, and I enjoy every minute of it. Smith is also quick to credit his assistants as a major reason for the programs continued success, saying, I believe that my staff will be the reason this program will continue to uphold the Bruin track and field tradition. I am confident that they could coach at any level, and they have the knowledge to help us become a nationally recognized team. Four of Smiths assistants have been honored with USTFCCCA Assistant's Coach of the Year awards: Michelle Forbes in 2012 for women's outdoor track and Doug in 2013 for both women's indoor and outdoor track. Randy Dalzell in 2015 for men's indoor track and Adam Haldorson in 2015 for women's indoor track.  George Fox director of athletics Craig Taylor says, Johns work with the multi-events gives him a well-rounded knowledge of everything it takes to run a successful program. We believe our track and cross country programs will continue to be in capable hands for years to come with Coach Smith. Smith resides in Newberg, Ore., and is married to former Bruin track and cross country All-American Dawn Hartwig, also a 1996 George Fox graduate. John and Dawn have three children, Davis (16), Jaci (14), and Blake (12). In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and pursuing his hobbies of surfing, BMX, and fishing.   2009 USTFCCCA NCAA Division III West Region Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year 2010 Northwest Conference Women's Track and Field Co-Coach of the Year 2010 USTFCCCA NCAA Division III West Region Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year 2011 Northwest Conference Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year 2012 Northwest Conference Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year 2012 USTFCCCA NCAA Division III West Region Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year 2013 USTFCCCA NCAA Division III West Region Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year 2013 Northwest Conference Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year 2014 USTFCCCA NCAA Division III West Region Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year 2014 Northwest Conference Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year 2015 USTFCCCA NCAA Division III West Region Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year
