Culleys tenure, a fourth-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships and a ninth-place showing at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The 2015-16 season proved to be a standout among a tradition of success as the GU women won the distance medley relay (DMR) at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, the first NCAA event title for the program since 2012. Later in the year, the women won the Penn Relays DMR title, becoming just the fourth team in history to complete the DMR double in the same calendar year. The Blue & Gray also won the Penn Relays 4x800-meter relay, taking home two Championship of America wheels for just the second time in program history. For her efforts, Culley was named the 2016 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Assistant Coach of the Year. Under Culleys guidance, Katrina Coogan finished her career on the Hilltop as an 11-time All-American, a two-time College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American and became the BIG EAST Conferences nomination for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year. Culley returned to coaching after an eight-year stint focusing primarily on her professional running career. In addition to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, Culley represented the United States as she was part of Team USA at the 2008 IAAF Indoor World Championships (3,000m), at the 2009 IAAF Outdoor Track & Field (5,000m) and again at the 2009 IAAF Cross Country World Championships (8,000m). During that time, Culley was also engaging in other endeavors such as incorporating and co-founding, under Coach Gagliano, the 501(c)(3) non-profit, New Jersey New York Track Club, where she was responsible for all business operations and club finances through 2013. She also founded and served as race director of the Run O the Mill 5K in Clinton, N.J. Prior to her arrival on the Hilltop, Culleys most recent coaching stop was at nearby American University from 2007-10, where she served as an assistant cross country and track & field coach, assisting Head Coach Matt Centrowitz with program operations, travel, recruiting and daily practices. Additionally, she was coached by Centrowitz during that time period. Centrowitz is a two-time Olympian, four-time United States champion, former American record holder and father of 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games 1,500-meter gold medalist, Matthew Centrowitz. Prior to American, Culley spent three years as the head womens track & field coach and the assistant cross country coach at Loyola University in Baltimore, Md. She directed all activities of the NCAA Division I track & field program, including recruiting, travel planning, facility coordination and training plans for all track and cross country athletes. While at Loyola, Culley also worked in the compliance office, assisting the director to ensure teams abided by NCAA rules and regulations. Culley was a track & field and cross country athlete at Rutgers University, earning All-America honors in cross country in 2002. A three-time MVP of the cross country team and a two-time MVP of the track & field team, Culley was awarded the Headley Singer Award, given annually to one outstanding female RU student-athlete. She was named the NJAIAW Woman of the Year in 2003 and was the recipient of the 2003 David A. Sonny Werblin Award, given to a national level accomplished RU athlete. She was the NCAA Woman of the Year for the State of New Jersey in 2003 and three times earned all-academic honors. Culley graduated cum laude from Rutgers University in 2004 with a bachelors degree in marketing and political science. She was announced as a member of the 2016 Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame Class in August and will be inducted in a ceremony in October. Culley currently resides in Arlington, Va., with her husband, Chris Farley, and their son, James. She and her husband own Pacers Running run specialty stores in the DC area and Princeton, N.J. She is currently pursuing her masters degree in integrated marketing communications from the Georgetown School of Continuing Studies. widget powered by

Smith's first season with the Hoyas - and effort that saw the Hoyas bring home the first BIG EAST Cross Country team championship since the 2001 season. GU finished 12th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship and six finished the season all-conference and five finished all-region. Cox set the school record for an 800-meter carry at the 2013 Penn Relays, splitting 2:01.7, crushing the previous record that had stood since 2001. Smith arrived on the Hilltop from Flagstaff, Ariz., where he assisted physiologist Dr. Jack Daniels, often regarded as the "World's Best Coach" from 2006-09 at the Center for High Altitude Training, a U.S. Olympic training site for long distance runners. A former Hoya co-captain, Smith was an All-BIG EAST, All-Region, and All-America cross country runner. He won the Mid-Atlantic Regional as well as earned All-America honors in 2002. With a marathon best of 2:19:43, Smith was a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon, competing in November 2007. Smith is a 2002 graduate of Georgetown and a 2006 graduate of American University. He resides in Washington, D.C. Alton McKenzie is entering his eighth year at the Hilltop, and first as the Director of Track & Field /Cross Country. He previously served a six-year stint as the head coach of the University of District of Columbia women’s Cross Country/Track & Field program and also served as the head men’s cross country coach at UDC from 2011-13. AT GEORGETOWN Women's Cross Country has won four straight BIG EAST titles under Alton McKenzie. McKenzie helped lead the Hoyas in 2023 to a first place finish in the women's Cross Country BIG EAST Championships and a third place finish for the men. Led the men's outdoor team to a second place finish and the women's team to a third place finish in the BIG EAST outdoor championships. Coached the USATF U20 3,000-meter champion who went on to compete at the World Athletics U20 Championships McKenzie helped secure five first-place finishes at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. In the 2021-22 season, McKenzie helped an athlete win Men's Most Outstanding Performer in track Events Working primarily with the sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers, McKenzie’s athletes have brought seven BIG EAST event titles back to the Hilltop in his short tenure. One of McKenzie’s athletes went on to earn All-America honors as he ran the 400-meter leg of the DMR at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, helping the Hoyas to a third-place performance. In 2017-18, one of McKenzie’s athletes won the 200-meter dash title in both the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championships. McKenzie was part of the 2016-17 staff that coached the track & field / cross country teams to a No. 6 ranking in the USTFCCCA Men’s Program of the Year standings. During the 2016-17 campaign, McKenzie worked with the sprints and jumps student-athletes, amassing seven marks among the top 25 all-time at Georgetown. During the 2017 indoor season, one of McKenzie’s athletes earned First Team All-America honors as he ran the 400-meter leg on the third-place distance medley relay squad at the NCAA championships. He coached a GU athlete to the sixth-fastest women’s indoor 200-meter time in program history. Four athletes recorded PRs in McKenzie’s inaugural season on staff and his athletes garnered 10 All-BIG EAST honors across the indoor and outdoor seasons. In McKenzie’s first season, the Hoyas won both the indoor and outdoor 4x400-meter relay titles at the BIG EAST Championships, a feat the Blue & Gray has accomplished only two other times (1999, 2015). PRIOR TO GEORGETOWN Over his six-year stint at UDC, McKenzie managed the overall operation of the track & field program and turned the Firebirds into a force in the NCAA Division II East Region and a powerhouse in the East Coast Conference (ECC). During his time with UDC, McKenzie was twice named the ECC Indoor Coach of the Year (2013, 2014) and coached his athletes to nine NCAA Division II All-America honors. It did not take long for McKenzie’s teams to achieve national success as he guided UDC’s first All-American in the triple jump (2013) in program history. The All-America honor in the triple jump ended a four-year drought for the Firebirds that dated back to 2009. McKenzie’s teams earned four NCAA All-America honors apiece in 2013 and 2014. His teams captured two ECC championships (2013 indoor, 2014 indoor) and McKenzie developed five ECC Athletes of the Year, including the first ECC men’s cross country individual champion in program history. McKenzie totaled 173 total All-ECC honors with 122 nods to the first team and 51 on the second team over his final four years. Off the track, one of McKenzie’s athletes was named a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American in 2014. Additionally, eight athletes were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team and two of his teams were awarded the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Award. GEORGETOWN CAREER, ACADEMICS & PERSONAL McKenzie was an All-American on the Hilltop as the leadoff leg of the fourth-place 4x800-meter relay squad at the 1993 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. He ran the second leg on the indoor 4x800-meter IC4A championship squad in 1991 and still holds a top-10 time as part of the indoor 4x800-meter squad that ran 7:22.35, where he ran leadoff. He served as a team captain his senior year and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1993. He received his USATF Level I certification in 2012. McKenzie and his wife, Charlene, reside in Silver Spring, Md., with their son, Micah, and daughter, Gabriella.

Brandon Bonsey

Bonsey's return to the Hilltop, Georgetown has been a consistent presence at the national level in middle distance and distance events, most recently highlighted by four-consecutive years of Hoyas qualifying for the NCAA outdoor championships in the steeplechase and the 10,000-meter run, and three-straight years of 800-meter qualifiers and a return to prominence in the DMR after a four-year drought at the NCAA indoor championships. Bonsey arrived on the Hilltop following a two-year stint with the Syracuse track & field / cross country program. With the Orange, Bonsey worked primarily with the middle distance and distance runners for both the men's and women's teams, while also assisting with recruiting and coordinating team travel. He helped guide the men's cross country team to a 2010 BIG EAST team championship. The Syracuse men finished the 2010 cross country season with a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championships while the women posted top-20 finishes in both 2010 (10th) and 2011 (17th). Both cross country teams won the Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships in both 2010 and 2011. During his time with the Orange, Syracuse had four student-athletes earn All-America honors in Tito Medrano, Pat Dupont, Lauren Penney and Katie Hursey. Additionally, SU had three individual BIG EAST champions in outdoor track & field in Medrano, Dupont and Sarah Pagano. Bonsey's tutelage led Jace Lowry to the 2012 USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Cross Country title. Prior to working with the Orange, Bonsey spent one year as an assistant with the Hoyas. In addition to assisting with the middle distance and distance runners, he was responsible for coordinating the recruiting process, daily practices and travel arrangements for the Hoyas. During his prior stint at Georgetown, Bonsey helped guide Andrew Bumbalough to All-America status in cross country and to third-place finishes at the NCAA and USA Track & Field (USATF) Championships in the 5,000-meter run. He also helped train Mike Krisch to All-America status in cross country and to a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter run. During Bonsey's junior year as a student-athlete in 2007, he finished fifth in the 1,000-meter at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship garnering All-BIG EAST honors. He ran a PR 4:04.21 in the mile that same season at the indoor Terrier Classic and earlier that year placed 36th at the 2006 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. During his sophomore season, he earned All-BIG EAST honors as a member of the 4x800-meter relay team that placed third at the indoor championships. In 2005, his first year at Georgetown, Bonsey competed at the USATF Jr. National Championships in the 1,500-meter event. Bonsey captained the cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams during his senior year. He was chosen to participate in the Veteran Leaders Program, a Georgetown leadership program designed for team captains to develop the skills and knowledge critical to be an effective and vocal leader. The Falmouth, Maine native competed in cross country and indoor and outdoor track for Georgetown from 2004-09, graduating from Georgetown in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in government. widget powered by
