Experience: 40th Season Education: Fordham University BS Economics (’77)                   Temple University M Ed Athletic Administration (’79) Tommy Hunter began working at Georgetown in 1979 as the Director of Intramural Sports and Special Programs. In 1984 he took over the Men’s Golf program and currently serves as Head Coach and Director of Special Projects assisting the athletic development team raising funds for Georgetown Athletics.   Hunter has led the Hoyas to five NCAA post season tournaments. In 1997, the team made its first appearance in the NCAA East Regional which was held at The Homestead Resort and the famous Upper Cascades Course. The Hoyas second trip to the NCAA East Regional was in 2004 held at The Yale Golf Course. The third trip to post season play sent the Hoyas to the 2010 NCAA Southwest Central Regional in Bryan, Texas on The Traditions Course at Texas A&M. The fourth post season stop found the Hoyas competing in the 2016 NCAA Southeast Regional held at The Vanderbilt Legends North Course in Franklin, Tennessee. Most recently, the Hoyas were sent to the 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional in Orlando, Florida played at The Reunion Resort – Watson Course.   In 2023, the Hoyas competed in The Inaugural St. Andrews Links Collegiate at The Old Course in Scotland. Georgetown, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, and Notre Dame competed in a unique Stroke Play and Medal-Match Play format October 23-25. The event was a memorable experience for the Georgetown Men’s Golf Program and all who support our student-athletes.   Under Hunter’s direction Georgetown has captured four Big East Conference Championships – 1998 (The TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Potomac, Md.) and 2010 (The Copperhead Course at The Innisbrook Resort, Tampa, Florida) and in 2016 (The Callawassiee Island Golf Club in Okatie, South Carolina) and in 2018 (The Callawassiee Island Golf Club in Okatie, South Carolina).  The Hoyas have finished in the top five of the Big East Championship Tournament 19 times since 1990 – first-place four times, second five times, third six times, and fourth three times, and once in the fifth position in regular season competition The Hoyas have captured first-place in 20 NCAA Division I tournaments.   Hunter has coached over 80+ athletes who have either been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America All-American Scholar Team (38) or The Big East Conference All-Scholar Team (48) along with Will O’Neill being named to the PING 2021-22 All -Region Team for his outstanding play in the Northeast Region. The Hoyas have received GCAA “18 Birdies” All-Academic Team Honors for outstanding team GPA – 2017-18., 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2023-24.   Hunter’s personal accolades include four times named BIG EAST Coach of the Year – 1995, 2004, 2010 and 2016. Coach of the Year honors in District II of Division I Men’s Golf in 1997. Georgetown University’s Coach of the Year in 2005 & 2016 and the Vicennial Medal at Georgetown University in 1999 distinguishing 20 + years of service.   Hunter was the president of the BIG EAST Golf Coaches Committee and chair of the District II Golf Committee. He was the 2015 Big East Championship Tournament Chair. He also serves on the advisory boards for the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and Golf Pride Grips Co. and has been the keynote speaker for the ESPN Junior Tour. Hunter has been a member of the Georgetown University Host Committee for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments in 2001, 2006, 2008, and 2012. Hunter has been a guest speaker at the annual Mid-Atlantic PGA (MAPGA) College Seminar which assists junior golfers and their parents in the college recruiting process.   Fundraising for Georgetown athletics and maintaining relations with the men’s golf alumni community has always been Hunter’s passion. He spearheaded THE MAJOR, a premier golf event held at TPC Stadium Course (2008), Pinehurst #2 (2010) and The TPC Old White TPC Course at The Greenbrier (2012) which raised over $450K for all of Georgetown’s sports programs. In 1984, Hunter gathered generous golf alumni to support several program aspirations. The group continued to grow through the years and eventually evolved into The19th Hole Club. Today, the club remains the cornerstone of financial support to the team’s operating budget.   Prior to Georgetown, Hunter served as the Assistant Director of the Vincent T, Lombardi Memorial Center at Fordham University, his alma mater. He spent four years as a member of the Fordham University baseball team coached by former New York Yankee legend, Gil McDougald.   Off the golf course, Hunter is an IAABO basketball official, Board #12, serving interscholastic leagues in the District of Columbia, Montgomery Country, Md., Howard County, Md. and Arlington, Va. He officiated the Maryland Public Schools Athletic Association (MPSAA) State Championships at the University of Maryland’s XFinity Center in 2009, ’10, ’12,’13 ,’14 and ‘16. He is also a former staff member of the Capitol Conference Basketball League, which is a member of the NCAA Division III.   Hunter grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and attended Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC. His undergraduate years were spent at Fordham University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in economics in 1977; from there he moved on to Temple University to study athletic administration and received his Master of Education degree in 1979.
