Andy Boyce

Head Coach

Boyce is in his ninth year as head swimming and diving coach for Grand Valley State. Andy joined the staff as an assistant coach in August of 2004 and then became head coach in 2008 after the retirement Dewey Newsome. Newsome is the only other head coach in the program's history. Boyce has led the Lakers to new heights since taking over as head coach, evidenced by the breaking of every record kept by the program. In addition, GVSU's top-10 performance lists are dominated by student-athletes under Boyce's tutelage and the Lakers have earned 443 All-American honors since the 2008 campaign. In addition to outstanding individual success, the Lakers have excelled as a team under Boyce. Boyce guided the women's team to the 2009 GLIAC Women's Swimming and Diving title, while the GVSU men's team claimed the 2008, 2010, and 2015 GLIAC Championships. The women's title was the first in the program's history, while the men's title in 2015 was the fourth. Boyce has also been named GLIAC Coach of the Year five times in his career (4 for the men and 1 for the women). The visibility of the Grand Valley State swimming and diving program has increased to a national level with Boyce at the helm. The Laker men have recorded six top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships under Boyce, including a program-best fourth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships. The Laker women have had five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships under Boyce. In addition, Andy has received the ASCA Award of Excellence after each of his eight years as head coach. The Lakers have excelled academically as well, having earned Scholar All-America plaudits for both the men and women by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America under his direction. Prior to arriving at Grand Valley State Boyce served as a graduate assistant coach at Ball State University from August of 2002 through May of 2004. While at Ball State, Andy earned his Master's degree in Sports Management. He also coached high school and several club teams. He was a four-year letter winner for the Cardinals in the pool and a member of the 200 medley and 400 medley relays that established school records during his time in Muncie. Boyce was a two time, all-state selection at Grand Rapids Northview High School where he was named Most Valuable Swimmer three times. Andy was also a three-time all-area honoree.
