Amy Opsal was named the Gustavus Head Club Men's Volleyball Coach in the spring of 2024. She is entering her first full year at Gustavus in the 2024-25 academic year. Opsal most recently comes from Monument Volleyball Club in Alexandria, Va., where she was the head coach of the boys U17 team that qualified for USA Volleyball club nationals in Las Vegas, N.V. Prior to that, Opsal was at Northern Virginia Volleyball Association where she coached all ages and was the head coach from 2018-20. Before transitioning into the youth sports world, she was the first assistant at the NCAA Division III University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. In her time with the Pointers as an assistant, Amy helped UWSP to a 42-26 record. In her two seasons in Stevens Point, she coached four all-conference Pointers, including 2018 Second Team All-American April Gehl. Opsal began her coaching career for the University of Minnesota men's club volleyball team. She helped the Gophers to a top-20 national finish and coached eight all-conference players during her tenure, in addition to assisting the JV and varsity teams at Lakeville South High School. During her undergrad, Amy played at Augsburg University (Minn.) from 2008-2011 as a defensive specialist. In her final season with the Auggies, she was a recipient of the 2011 MIAC Sportsmanship Award as a team captain. She continues to participate in volleyball, including AVP beach and grass volleyball competitions and assists the women’s volleyball team at Bethany Lutheran College. Opsal holds a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and Management and a Master's degree in Community and Organizational Leadership. Opsal is a native of North Mankato, Minn. and currently works as an account supervisor for Kovly Studio in Mankato, a full service brand and marketing firm.

Laurie Kelly

Laurie Kelly is in her 14th season as the head coach of the Gustavus women’s basketball team in 2025-26. Kelly, a 1993 graduate of the University of St. Thomas with a degree in speech communications, came to Gustavus from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, where she directed the Division I Lumberjacks for nine seasons. Kelly has coached the Gusties to several record breaking seasons in her 13 years at Gustavus. She has led the Gustavus program to 11 top-five MIAC finishes, including the program's first ever back-to-back-to-back MIAC Regular Season Championships in the last three seasons. In her most recent season, Kelly coaches the Gusties to their first Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fourth NCAA Tournament in a row after claiming her program's fourth MIAC Playoff Championship in a row. Kelly has coached the Gusties to 46 total MIAC post-season accolades, and set a record in 2024 as the first team to have all five starters selected as All-Conference. Kelly's 2024-25 squad made new contributions to the program record books, posting the most wins in program history. Kelly has made six NCAA tournament runs with the Gusties, the most memorable in the 2024-25 season, when the team hosted the NCAA First and Second Round and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history. Kelly has coached ten players to national and regional recognition, the most recent being Emma Kniefel (All-American) in 2024-25. Coach Kelly has also been named a finalist for WBCA National Coach of the Year in her last three seasons. A Rochester, Minnesota native, Kelly made a quick ascent through the Division II and I coaching ranks after a record setting Division III playing career at the University of St. Thomas in the early '90s. In nine years at Northern Arizona, she compiled the most wins in the program’s history (117), while also directing the team to its first-ever Big Sky Conference tournament title and NCAA tournament bid in the 2005-06 season. During Kelly’s tenure, the Lumberjacks advanced to the Big Sky tournament six times with two appearances in the championship game (2006, 2007), and her teams registered two of the three 20-win seasons in the program’s history. Prior to her position at Northern Arizona, Kelly coached at Binghamton University in New York and built the Bearcats into one of the top Division II programs in the country before helping the institution transition to a Division I program in 2001-02. During her five years at Binghamton, Kelly compiled a record of 94-22, including a mark of 75-13 in the program’s final three years at the Division II level, and her squads won New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) titles in 1999 and 2000 and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) titles in 2000 and 2001. Kelly started her collegiate coaching career as the graduate assistant coach at Minnesota State University, Mankato from 1996 to 1998. While she was at MSU-Mankato she earned a master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration. Before her success in the coaching ranks, Laurie Trow Kelly was a standout player at the University of St. Thomas from 1989 to 1993 and is recognized by many as one of the greatest players in NCAA Division III history. A gifted athlete, the 6-1 Kelly scored 2,607 points and pulled down 1,204 rebounds in four years, earning Kodak All-America honors three consecutive seasons. In her senior season (1992-93), Kelly was voted National Player of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association after averaging more than 26 points per game. She set 22 conference and 24 school records, was conference MVP three times and was also named Midwest Sports Channel NCAA Division III Women’s Athlete of the Year. In January of 2006, Kelly was one of five players selected to the NCAA Division III 25th Anniversary Team. She was named to the St. Thomas Hall of Fame in 1998. Kelly lives in Saint Peter with and her husband, Matt, and has two daughters, Morgan '25 and Madison '27. Jesse Lager
Head Coach
Jesse Lager was hired as the Gustavus Clay Target Head Coach in 2025 to lead the new club sport program. Lager, a Saint Peter, Minn. native, has owned his own construction company for 27 years. Lager helped start the St. Peter High School trap team and was the head coach for 10 years. After his twin boys graduated high school, Lager stepped down as head coach but still helps as an assistant coach.

Kelsey Letourneau is in her seventh season as a member of the Gustavus women's basketball coaching staff in the 2024-25 academic year. She was named the program's associate head coach in August of 2024. Letourneau joined the Gustavus women's basketball coaching staff in the 2018-19 season. Since then, Letourneau has helped coach the Gusties to five top-five MIAC finishes, including the program's first-ever outright MIAC regular season championship, and the only three MIAC playoff championships. In the team's most recent season, Letourneau helped coach the Gusties to their third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. The 2023-24 squad wrote themselves into the women's basketball record books 20 times, setting single season records for MIAC winning percentage (.950), team field goal percentage (47.9%), and team assists (502). The team posted its highest ever national ranking (No. 4) and was the first in MIAC history to have all five starters selected as All-Conference. A 2013 Gustavus graduate, Kelsey Florian Letourneau was a key contributor for the Gustie women's basketball team from 2009-13, appearing in 97 career games and starting 50, with the team making the MIAC playoffs all four years. Letourneau posted her best numbers in her senior season, averaging 11.6 points per game, leading the team in assists (76), free throw percentage (.762), and assist-turnover ratio (1.29). Letourneau was named the MIAC's 2012 Sixth Player-of-the-Year and 2013 Honorable Mention All-MIAC. After leaving Gustavus, Letourneau got her master’s degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences at Ithaca College in New York. While obtaining her master’s, Letourneau was a graduate assistant women’s basketball coach at Ithaca and helped coach the team to two conference championships as well as two NCAA tournament appearances. While at Ithaca, some of Letourneau was involved in analyzing film and scouting opponents, assisting the head coach with recruiting, and helping design drills for team practices. In 2015, Letourneau took an assistant women’s basketball coaching position at Cornell University, and assisted in duties such as recruiting, developing scouting reports, and overseeing student workers and managers. After one season at Cornell, Letourneau worked as an assistant coach at Franklin & Marshall College from 2016-18 where she helped with many duties such as designing practice drills, scouting opponents, and recruiting. Letourneau lives in Shakopee with her husband, BJ, and their two children, Aidan and Carsen.

Angie Potts returns for another season behind the bench with the Gustavus women's basketball team in the 2024-25 academic year. In the 2023-24 season, Potts helped the Gusties to their best national ranking in team history, a sweep of the MIAC regular season and playoff championships, and their third consecutive NCAA postseason appearance in. A 2004 Gustavus graduate and 2019 Hall of Famer, Angie Peterson Potts was a consummate team player and shut-down defender on the court for the Gustie women's basketball team. After transferring to Gustavus her sophomore year, Potts went on to earn All-America honors from both the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and D3hoops.com, and was named the 2003-04 Gustavus Female Athlete of the Year. A dynamic athlete with the ability to play anywhere on the court, Potts guided the Gusties to the 2002-03 MIAC championship and an appearance at the NCAA tournament. The Northfield, Minn., native was a two-time All-Region honoree, three-time All-Conference Team member, and was twice named to the MIAC All-Defensive Team. A selfless attitude and love of the game quickly gained Potts complete trust from her teammates as a leader. Even with a team-first approach, Peterson Potts graduated as the program record holder for points in a season (472) and three-pointers made (62). In three seasons wearing the Black and Gold, Peterson Potts posted 1,333 points (16.1 per game) and 192 steals. After graduating magna cum laude in 2004 with a degree in elementary education, Potts earned her master’s degree in Differentiated Instruction from Concordia-St. Paul in 2009. She has received numerous other teaching certifications and is acting president of the Minnesota Middle School Board of Directors. Mara Quam
Coach
Mara Quam was named the assistant coach of the Gustavus volleyball team in spring of 2025. Quam, a 2021 graduate of nearby Minnesota State-Mankato, lettered in volleyball in all five of her seasons for the Mavericks from 2017-21. Quam joins the coaching staff after serving as an assistant coach at Division II Winona State University for three seasons. In her time at WSU, Quam coached player Kylie Welch to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) All-Conference honors in her senior year. While a player at MSU-Mankato, Quam played libero and graduated holding the program’s all-time record in career digs (1,841). As a sophomore in 2018, Quam led the NSIC in digs per set and ranked sixth as a senior in 2021. She was a two-time NSIC All-Conference selection, three-time Defensive Player of the Week, and two-time NSIC All-Academic Team awardee. Quam is a native of Kenyon, Minn. and graduated from Kenyon-Wanamingo in 2017. She earned her degree in sport management with a minor in marketing from MSU-Mankato, and graduated with her master's degree in sport management and educational leadership from Winona State.

Evan Haldeman

COACHING RESUME Gustavus Adolphus College - 2023-Present Esports Director MSU-Mankato - 2022-23 Assistant Esports Coach EDUCATION MSU-Mankato - 2023 B.S. Sport Management Evan Haldeman is in his second year as the Esports director in the 2024-25 season. Haldeman is the first to hold this position in Gustavus Athletics history. At Gustavus, Haldeman oversees the planning and growth of the College's newly recognized Esports program, and is looking to expand opportunities for current and future students in collegiate Esports. There are currently four teams that students can join, each corresponding to a different competitive game: Valorant, League of Legends, Overwatch, and Super Smash Bros. Prior to coming to Gustavus, Haldeman, a 2023 graduate of MSU-Mankato, served as the Maverick's Esports assistant director for a year and a half. In this role, his responsibilities included managing the University's teams as well as planning events on campus and for the greater Minnesota Esports community.
