Aryn DeGrood is entering her 11th season as head gymnastics coach in the 2024-25 school year. A 2009 Gustavus graduate and four-year member of the gymnastics team, DeGrood served as the program's assistant coach before taking over the reigns as the sixth head coach in the program’s history in 2014. DeGrood, a native of Eden Prairie, collected her second WIAC Coach of the Year honor in 2024 after previously earning the award in 2017. DeGrood was also named the Division III West Region Coach of the Year in both seasons. She has coached 21 WIAC All-Conference athletes, one WIAC champion, 10 All-Americans, and one national event champion. She also coached the West Region Gymnast of the Year in both 2016 (Alex Kopp) and 2019 (Amanda Malo). In her most recent season, DeGrood's squad broke five records and set 18 individual career high scores. The Gusties broke the program team record score twice (UW-Oshkosh - 188.550, Winona State - 188.875), set a new team vault (47.5) and beam (48.05) record, and a new individual beam record (Maddox Lee - 9.775). Additionally, both Maddox Lee and Marley Michaud earned All-Conference honors, while all graduating seniors earned NCGA Academic All-America status, marking the ninth season in a row the graduating class has completed this feat. While at Gustavus, Aryn Bell DeGrood was a member of both the gymnastics and track & field teams. As a gymnast, she earned four letters and was a key contributor on the vault, uneven parallel bars, and floor exercise. She competed in the vault at the NCGA Championships in 2008 and 2009 and was named a NCGA All-Academic honoree her senior season. On the track, she excelled in the 100-meter hurdles and earned a total of four All-Conference honors over her career. DeGrood held the school record in the 100-hurdles until national champion Birgen Nelson '23 claimed it in 2023. After graduating from Gustavus with a degree in history, DeGrood attended the University of North Dakota, where she served as a graduate assistant coach in the track & field program for two seasons while working toward her master’s degree in history. Following her time at UND, she assisted two years with the Macalester College track & field program before returning to Gustavus as an assistant for the gymnastics team in June of 2013. Aryn resides in Saint Peter and is married to her husband Justin '07, and together have two daughters, Zoey and Harper, as well as a dog, Riggs. Tyler Walsh was named head coach of the Gustavus men's hockey program in the spring of 2024 and is the 20th head coach in the history of the program, but just the fourth in the past 60 years. In his first year, Walsh guided the program to the MIAC regular season championship, MIAC playoff championship, NCAA tournament appearance, and was named MIAC Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year. The season record of 16-10-2 (10-4-2 MIAC) marked the program’s first season above .500 in 10 years. Five Gusties were named All-Conference, and the program finished #19 in both NCAA DIII Men’s Ice Hockey national polls. Walsh joined a Gustavus program that has claimed 14 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championships and five playoff titles. The Gusties, who have made the NCAA tournament six times with a national runner-up finish in 2009, have an all-time record of 918-750-102 in 82 seasons. Walsh came to Gustavus after serving as the assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator for six years at Colby College (Maine), a Division III team in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. While at Colby, Walsh helped direct the Mules to the NESCAC playoffs in five of six seasons and recruited three All-America selections. After capturing the 2022 NESCAC regular season championship, Walsh and the Colby coaches were named Men's Ice Hockey Staff of the Year by the conference. Walsh got his start in coaching as a student assistant at the University of Maine in 2011 and then at Canisius College (N.Y.) as the director of hockey operations for one season. He served as an assistant coach for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program from 2014-16 and then was the head hockey coach and assistant athletic director at North Yarmouth Academy (Maine) for two years. Walsh comes from a long line of coaching pedigree with his father Shawn Walsh (Maine) and grandfather, Ron Mason (Michigan State). Shawn Walsh led the Black Bears to two national championships as head coach at the University of Maine. He spent 17 seasons with Maine, making seven Frozen Four appearances. Mason, a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, won 924 men's college hockey games over a 36-season head-coaching career at Lake Superior State University (1966-73), Bowling Green State University (1973-79) and Michigan State University (1979-2002). He led LSSU to the NAIA national championship in 1972 and MSU to the NCAA national title in 1986. Walsh has two brothers active in the hockey world as well, Travis, who captained Michigan State from 2012-16, and Sean who serves as the assistant men's hockey coach at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Walsh, a Lansing, Mich. native, is a 2013 graduate of the University of Maine and earned his master's degree from Thomas College in 2023.

Andrea Peterson, a 2007 Gustavus graduate, returned to the Gustie coaching staff in 2022 after previously serving as a high school girls' hockey coach. Peterson was an assistant coach at Gustavus from 2007-11 before moving on to New Prague Area Schools where she was a physical education teacher and head girls' hockey coach from 2012-18. Since 2015, Peterson has taught at Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools and was an assistant girls' hockey coach at Prior Lake from 2019-22. Peterson was promoted to Associate Head Coach at Gustavus in June of 2024. The Gustavus women's hockey team has claimed six MIAC regular season titles, six playoff championships, six NCAA tournament appearances, and a national championship in Peterson's seven total years. Last season, the Gusties collected their fourth consecutive MIAC championship sweep, punching a ticket to the NCAA tourney, where they fell to eventual national champions UW-River Falls in the quarterfinals. Peterson, primarily coaching defenders, has help build the nation's premier defense, producing three All-American defenders who have earned five honors, including three-time All-American and now fellow coach Kirstin Peterson. The Gusties have led Division III in scoring defense several seasons, and led the country in team shutouts in the last three consecutive years. Peterson became one of the greatest Division III women’s hockey players of all time in her career, and is in a league of her own when looking at the rich history of the Gustavus women’s hockey program. Peterson is the only player in the history of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) to be selected Player of the Year all four seasons. Recognized as the most competitive skater on the ice whenever she played, Peterson earned All-America honors all four years and finished her collegiate career as the 2006-07 Laura Hurd Award winner (Division III Player of the Year) and the Gustavus Female Athlete of the Year. Peterson led the nation in scoring as a defender during her freshman and senior seasons and holds the Division III record for most career points scored by a defender. Her 185 career points are the most in program history and rank third all-time among all Division III women’s hockey players. Peterson also holds the program record with 107 career assists, ranking second in Division III history, while her 78 career goals rank second at Gustavus. Impressive hands paired with phenomenal shooting ability allowed Peterson to score 23 power play goals, which ranks fourth in Division III history. Playing her best in big moments, Peterson led the Gusties to three MIAC regular season championships, four MIAC playoff championships, and four NCAA tournament appearances, highlighted by an NCAA third-place finish in 2005. During her four seasons, Peterson and the Gusties accumulated an overall record of 94-18-3 and went 67-4-1 in the MIAC. She was inducted into the Gustavus Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. A standout defender for the Gusties from 2007-11, Kirstin Peterson returned to the Gustavus women's hockey coaching staff in 2018-19 after serving as an assistant coach for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. Peterson, in her ninth year as an assistant to Mike Carroll, has helped the Gusties to incredible success from behind the bench. The Gustavus women's hockey team has claimed six MIAC regular season titles, six playoff championships, six NCAA tournament appearances, and a national championship in Peterson's nine total years. As an assistant coach in 2011-12, Peterson helped the Gusties post a 24-4-2 overall record and 16-1-1 mark in the MIAC, winning the conference championship and taking fourth in the NCAA Championships. In the 2012-13 season, the Gusties went 27-2-1 overall and a perfect 18-0 in the league, winning another conference title and once again taking fourth in the national tournament. Peterson helped coach the Gusties to both the MIAC regular season and playoff titles during the 2019-20, 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24 seasons, and was a member of the program's national championship team, guiding the Gusties to their best season in program history. Peterson helped the Gusties bring home a national trophy to the West Region for the first time in NCAA Division III hockey history, winning the college's and the conference's first national championship in women's hockey. During her tenure as a player, the Golden Gusties went 91-16-9 overall and 62-5-5 in the MIAC, winning four MIAC championships and taking home four MIAC playoff titles. She recorded a total of 16 goals and 59 assists for 75 points, ranking 28th overall and fourth among defensemen in career points at Gustavus. Peterson, a four-time All-MIAC performer and three-time All-American (2009, 2010, and 2011), broke the program’s “Iron Woman” award in 2011, setting a new games-played mark by skating in all 116 contests over her career. Her record has since been broken multiple times – all by players who Peterson has coached. Peterson earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy from St. Catherine University in 2017 and now works as a physical therapist in New Ulm while living in Saint Peter.

Allie Stanger is in her sixth year on the Gustavus women's hockey coaching staff in the 2024-25 academic year. Stanger joined the Gustavus coaching staff in 2019 as a graduate assistant after a successful four-year playing career for the Gusties. Stanger coaches primarily forwards and serves as the team's head strength and conditioning coaching. Since Stanger has been with the Gusties as a coach, the team has won four MIAC regular season titles, four MIAC Playoff Championships, made four NCAA appearances, and took home the program's first-ever national championship. Last season, the Gusties collected their fourth consecutive MIAC championship sweep, punching a ticket to the NCAA tourney, where they fell to eventual national champions UW-River Falls in the quarterfinals. In Stanger's five seasons behind the bench, the Gusties have compiled a record of 100-17-4 overall and 62-4-4 in the MIAC. Stanger has helped six forwards earn 16 All-Conference honors, and one earn two All-America nods (Hailey Holland). Holland went on to become one of the greatest players in program history, totaling 74 goals and 68 assists for 142 points in 121 games. Stanger has helped the Gusties lead the MIAC offensively and defensively for the last three years, completing a perfect conference championship sweep in the last four full seasons. As a player, Stanger played in 107 games, notching 19 goals and 24 assists for 43 points with the Gusties going 64-28-17 during her time. A two-year captain for Gustavus, Stanger was a part of the 2016-17 team that finished third in the NCAA Tournament and she was named MIAC All-Conference in 2018-19. While a player, the Gusties claimed two regular season championships and made two NCAA tournament appearances. A native of Paynesville, Minn., Stanger currently resides in Saint Peter.

Communications HOMETOWN Edina, Minn. Steve Carroll is in his 23rd season as an assistant coach with the Gusties in the 2024-25 season. His responsibilities include helping recruit student-athletes and developing Gustavus goalies. Alongside brother and head coach Mike Carroll, the Gusties have seen extraordinary success on the ice, winning 16 conference regular season titles, 14 MIAC Playoff Championships, and making 16 NCAA postseason appearances, including a national championship in 2022-23. Last season, the Gusties collected their fourth consecutive MIAC championship sweep, punching a ticket to the NCAA tourney, where they fell to eventual national champions UW-River Falls in the quarterfinals. During Carroll's tenure behind the bench for the Gusties, he's developed a consistent pipeline of exceptional goaltending squads. Carroll has coached four goalies to seven All-Conference honors and two All-Americans in Amanda DiNella, and Katie McCoy. McCoy went on to become one of the best goaltenders in NCAA Division III history, taking after her coach after leading her team to a national title, setting program records for games played, victories, and wins in a season, and being named NCAA Tournament MVP. McCoy posted the most career wins and shutouts by any goalie in NCAA DIII and compiled an impressive record of 82-14-3 in her five seasons. She was named the 2023 USCHO.com Goaltender of the Year, a finalist for the Laura Hurd Player of the Year Award in 2024, and is just the second netminder in program history to earn multiple All-America honors. Carroll has more than 30 years of goalie coaching experience and is regarded as one of the top goalie instructors in the Midwest. He also serves as goalie coach-in-chief for USA Hockey’s Minnesota District. Carroll runs his own goalie school and each year coaches hundreds of boys and girls of all skill levels from all across the country. He is also the founder and director of Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp and HP Shooting Camp, and was named the 2024 winner of USA Hockey’s National Goaltending Developer Award. As a player, Carroll was a two-time All-America goaltender for Minnesota State University-Mankato. Carroll was a foiur-year letterwinner, leading the Mavericks to four NCAA national tournaments where they finished first once (1979-80), second once (1978-79) and third twice (1977-78 and 1980-81). He was selected as the 1980 NCAA Division II National Tournament MVP after leading his team to a national title. Carroll was named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the best player in men's college hockey. Carroll was awarded an NHL free-agent tryout with the Minnesota North Stars, receiving an invite from the North Stars' General Manager Lou Nanne. Upon graduation, Carroll held records for games played by a goaltender (104), career victories (82), career saves (3,570), saves in a season (1,090 - 1979-80), and wins in a season (29 - 1979-80). He was named MSU-Mankato's Male Athlete of the Century in 2000 and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2005, Carroll was also inducted into the Edina High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He is joined in both halls by brothers Mike Carroll (MSU '13, EHS '12) and Pat Carroll ('01, '08). Carroll serves as the Founder and Director of Goalie Development at the Carroll Goalie School, which he started in 1995.

Ethan Schwartz is in his first season as the assistant men's hockey coach alongside first-year head coach Tyler Walsh in the 2024-25 academic year. Schwartz joined the program with Walsh in the summer of 2024. A graduate of the University of Maine, Schwartz comes to Gustavus after serving as a student assistant for the Maine men's hockey team for three years. While at Maine, Schwartz managed film, updated statistics, and scouted opposing teams and prospective players. He is also the 18U assistant coach for Boston Hockey Academy, a role he has held since the summer of 2023. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Schwartz played three years of junior hockey in the WSHL, EHL, and USPHL leagues.

Justen Close joins the Gustavus Men’s Hockey staff as an Assistant Coach for the 2025-2026 season alongside Head Coach Tyler Walsh and Assistant Coach Ethan Schwartz. Close joins the staff after finishing a playing career that included 5 years at the University of Minnesota as a goaltender for the Golden Gophers, where he helped the Gophers win a Big Ten Championship, two Big Ten Regular Season Championships, and advance to two Frozen Fours. He also has a year of professional hockey experience for the Jacksonville Icemen of the ECHL, where he was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team. Close looks forward to assisting in recruiting, player development, practice planning, and film responsibilities. A native of Kindersley, SK, Close obtained his undergraduate degree in Management and his masters degree in Sports Management while at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 2024.
