Head Coach
Hull is in his 26th year as the head men's cross country and track & field coach at Hamilton College. Hull enjoyed his finest season as a cross country coach last year when the Continentals qualified for the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship for the first time as a team since 1971 and finished in 21st place. Hamilton took third place at the NCAA Atlantic Regional championships for its best finish under Hull, and ended up fourth at the NESCAC championships, which was the program's best performance since winning the conference title in 1988. The Continentals also captured the team title in the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) championships for the first time since 1975. Hull was rewarded for his team's historic season by receiving the Atlantic Region Division III Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year award from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and NESCAC and NYSCTC coach of the year honors. He coached five runners who made the all-region team and an amazing nine athletes on the NYSCTC all-conference team in 2015 alone. In 2015 Hull guided Joe Jensen '15 to his second and third all-America honors after Jensen finished in the top eight in the 200- and 400-meter dash at the NCAA indoor championships. Thanks to Jensen, the Continentals tied for 21st place in the team standings at NCAAs. Hull's men were ranked as high as 24th in the Division III indoor computer ratings by the USTFCCCA. Jensen posted victories in two events at both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) indoor and NYSCTC indoor championships. Seven athletes earned all-conference team honors and six school records were broken. In 2014 six Hamilton men's runners earned a spot on the NYSCTC cross country all-conference team and one made the all-region team based on his performance at the NCAA Atlantic Regional championship. The Continentals finished second at the NYSCTC meet and eighth out of 41 teams at regionals. Jensen finished second in the 400-meter dash at the 2014 NCAA Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship. He was selected the Atlantic Region Indoor Men's Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA and the Men's Outstanding Track Performer at the 2014 NYSCTC indoor championship. In 2013 Jensen was selected the NYSCTC Male Indoor Rookie of the Meet, and Jimmy Alexis '13 finished first in the pole vault at the NESCAC outdoor championship. Alexis is one of 17 athletes who have earned 32 NESCAC all-conference team honors under Hull since 2001. Four of Hull's cross country runners finished in the top 21 in the 2013 NYSCTC championships and all four earned a spot on the all-conference team. Adam Pfander '16 made the all-region team and qualified for the NCAA championship. Hull guided Peter Kosgei '11 to an NCAA cross country title at the 2008 Division III championship in Indiana. Kosgei was a three-time cross country all-American and was named the Division III men's athlete of the year by the USTFCCCA in 2008. Hull mentored Kosgei through three USTFCCCA Atlantic Region athlete of the year awards and four NESCAC most outstanding performer honors. In track & field, Kosgei captured an amazing eight NCAA individual titles and eight all-America awards from 2007 to 2009. In 2009, Kosgei defended his 2008 victory in the mile at the NCAA indoor championship and repeated his wins in the steeplechase and 5,000-meter run at the outdoor meet. TiDelco Ductan '09 qualified for the 2009 NCAA indoor championship in the triple jump under Hull. James Russell '09 won four straight outdoor pole vault titles from 2006 to 2009 at the NESCAC championship. Kosgei breezed to victory in the 800- and the 1,500-meter run and was named the NESCAC meet's Most Outstanding Male Performer in 2008 and 2009. He was selected the outdoor track athlete of the year by the USTFCCCA for the second year in a row in 2009. Hull led the men to three straight top-five finishes at the NYSCTC cross country championship from 1998 to 2000, including third place in 1999. The Continentals have been in the top 10 seven times at regionals. Hull has guided 102 indoor and outdoor individual conference champions while at Hamilton. A total of 35 school indoor and outdoor records have been broken or tied since Hull's first season in 1992. Hull's program also focuses on solid academic performance. Five of his cross country athletes were 2015 NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team selections and 10 track & field athletes made either the NESCAC winter or spring all-academic teams in 2015. Hull's cross country squad has earned eight straight USTFCCCA team all-academic honors and and the track & field program earned USTFCCCA all-academic honors for the fourth year in a row in 2015. Pfander was voted to the 2016 Academic All-District 3 Men's Cross Country/Track & Field first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Hull previously was the head cross country and track & field coach at SUNY Cortland and SUNY Plattsburgh, and he was named the 1985-86 SUNYAC Coach of the Year while at Cortland. Hull has developed 16 all-Americans, including national champions in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000-meter run, the mile and the steeplechase. He is a USATF Level I and Level II certified coach. Hull earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Frostburg State University. He resides in New Hartford with his wife Ellen, who is Hamilton's head women's cross country and track & field coach. They have two daughters -- Emily and Juliet -- and Emily is on the cross country and track & field teams at Hamilton.

John Hartpence
Assistant Coach
Hartpence is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Hamilton College cross country and track & field programs. He will coach the horizontal jump and hurdle event athletes during the track & field season. Hartpence was the head coach at Defiance College from 2007 until the spring of 2015 and was the head track & field coach at Dickinson College from 2000 to 2007. He actually got his start in college coaching as an assistant at Hamilton back in 1999-2000. He has been voted the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional coach of the year twice. At Defiance, Hartpence guided athletes to four all-America performances and coached the 2013 NCAA champion in the men's hammer throw. He led the women's track & field program to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) indoor and outdoor team championships in 2014 and picked up a pair of conference track & field coach of the year awards. He directed athletes to eight HCAC most outstanding freshman and seven most outstanding performer awards. His athletes captured 47 individual titles in 17 different events at the HCAC championships. He developed the first male and female NCAA all-region cross country runners in school history as well as both programs' overall and freshman record holders. One of his athletes was selected the 2013 USTFCCCA Field Event Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Hartpence led the Dickinson women to six Centennial Conference track & field championships and directed the men's team to four runner-up finishes at the conference meet. He produced seven all-Americans and his athletes qualified for the NCAA championships in 11 different events. He coached five athletes to USTFCCCA regional athlete of the year awards and 11 conference championships athlete of the meet honors. His athletes posted more than 50 individual conference titles in 21 different events. Hartpence completed a USA Track & Field Level 1 instructor training course in 2009 and has been a USATF Level 1 coaching education instructor since 2010. He is a USATF Level 1-certified track & field coach and is Level 2 certified for the throwing and jumping events. He holds a bachelor's degree from SUNY Cortland and earned his master's degree in health and human performance at the University of Montana.
