Gillian McDonald
Head Coach
McDonald is in her 11th year as the head field hockey coach at Hamilton College. In 2015 she led the team to a 9-7 record, including four wins in the NESCAC, and a third conference championship quarterfinal appearance in five years. One of McDonald's players was a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III all-America team selection and a NESCAC all-conference team pick. Two of her players made the NFHCA all-region team. In all, McDonald's players have received three all-America awards, along with 14 all-region and five all-NESCAC honors. McDonald has recorded 65 wins at Hamilton, including a team-record 13 in 2010 when the Continentals went 3-0 in overtime games. Hamilton finished second in the Liberty League with a record of 6-1 and advanced to the league championship final for the second straight year. The Continentals were ranked 15th in the final Top 20 coaches poll and smashed a team record with 55 goals. Colleen Callaghan '11 played in the NFHCA Division III Senior Game. McDonald led Hamilton to 12 wins and the first NCAA Division III championship appearance in program history in 2009. The Continentals earned a share of their first league regular season title and won their first league postseason game. McDonald received league co-coaching staff of the year honors for her efforts. In 2008 under McDonald, Hamilton won eight games and qualified for the four-team league championship for the first time. She coached her players to 18 all-league selections from 2006 to 2010. Solid academic performance is important to McDonald as eight student-athletes earned a spot on the 2015 NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team. Hamilton received an NFHCA National Academic Team Award for the 10th straight year under McDonald. The program recognizes those institutions that achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the academic year. McDonald was an assistant coach at the University of Rochester in 2004 when the Yellowjackets posted a 10-9 record. She coached at the North American Hockey Academy during the 2005-06 academic year. McDonald lettered in both field hockey and hockey at Bowdoin College. She was a first team all-America goaltender for field hockey as a senior and collected all-region honors twice. A four-time first-team NESCAC all-conference selection, McDonald helped lead the Polar Bears to the conference title in 2000. She is ranked in the top 30 in shutouts, goals against average and wins on the NCAA Division III career lists. McDonald was given Bowdoins Sidney J. Watson Award after her senior year in 2004 for distinguishing herself by her athletic performance and leadership of more than one team. The Hudson, Quebec native received her bachelor's degree in 2004 and earned her master's from SUNY Cortland. She attended the Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass.
