Betsy Leonard
Head Coach
Leonard is entering her sixth season at the helm of the Swimming program for the 2016-17 campaign. The Tiger swim team has enjoyed steady improvement from year to year throughout Coach Leonard's tenure, setting new school records at virtually every meet since the 2014-15 season. Starting with the 2014-15 season, the team competed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference after being an independent program for the first three years. The 2016 Tiger squad one four head-to-head matchups and placed third at the ODAC Championship meet. H-SC took impressive victories against Gallaudet (164-65, 158-41) and Ferrum (136-56, 127-20). Four Tigers were named All-ODAC, including one on the second-team. In 2015, Hampden-Sydney won three head-to-head competitions and finished third at the inaugural ODAC Championship Meet. H-SC boasted commanding wins over Ferrum (136-92) and Greensboro (94-49). Senior Lee Ayscue was named the ODAC's first Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Tigers came out victorious in four meets in 2014, defeating Greensboro three times while also taking out Frostburg State. The 2013 squad won five out of seven meets, handily defeating the likes of Greensboro, Gallaudet, Davis and Elkins, and Randolph-Macon. The fledgling 2012 team competed in just two competitions, but they were able to defeat Greensboro 105-64 and narrowly lost to Randolph-Macon just 77-61. Coach Leonard also serves as the college's Head Cross Country coach, a position she has held since 2011. In addition, Coach Leonard was the Assistant Fitness Director for TigeRec from 2010 to 2012 and was promoted to Director in December 2012. In her roll with TigeRec, she is an AFPA (American Fitness Professional and Associates) Certified Personal Trainer and is the Fitness Instructor. She attended York College (PA) and was a member of the school's swim and track teams. Along with her passion for nutrition and fitness, Betsy is an avid horseback rider and trainer.
