Mark Carr
Head Coach
Carr is set to enter his 15th season as head coach of the Hartwick football program. Prior to his appointment, he spent nine years (1993-2001) as the offensive coordinator and four years (1998-2001) as the assistant head coach at Hartwick under Steve Stetson before taking over the controls of the program. He will continue to double as the offensive coordinator. This past season, Carr became the all-time winningest coach in Hartwick football history after a 41-30 victory over Buffalo State on October 31. Carr would guide the Hawks to a 4-6 record overall with a pair of wins in the Empire 8 Conference. The 'Wick passing offense would finish the season ranked fifth in Division III football with an average of 359.1 yards per outing. In 2013, the Hawks finished the season with a final record of 6-4 and a 3-4 mark in the Empire 8 Conference. It was the Hawks' highest win total in the league since 2008. The win total included a 21-9 victory over Ithaca, which marked the first victory over the Bombers since 2007. Under Carr's leadership in 2008, quarterback Jason Boltus and wide receiver Jack Phelan became two of the most decorated players in the history of the program. Boltus was the Empire 8 and d3football.com East Region Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and a Gagliardi Trophy Regional Finalist for the second straight time. He was also selected as an Associated Press Little All-American and was tabbed the ECAC Division III Player of the Year and the Northwest Player of the Year. He set an NCAA career record for yardage in Division III accumulating 14,231 yards in four seasons with the Hawks. He was the first Hartwick player to be invited to the NFL Player Combine in Indianapolis and has played the last four seasons with the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Phelan was named an American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) All-American, an Associated Press Little All-American, and a d3football.com First Team All-American. His 26 touchdown catches equaled a 10-year old NCAA Division III record and he led the nation in both receiving yards and receiving yards per game for the second straight year. In 2007, Carr guided Hartwick to foreign territory as far as football goes. Under his direction, the Hawks posted an 8-3 record, upset nationally-ranked St. John Fisher and Ithaca en route to gaining its first Empire 8 Conference title (shared), and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time. Boltus led the nation in total offense and passing yards per game en route to garnering E8 Offensive Player of the Year, East Region Offensive Player of the Year by D3football.com, was a national finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, and became the second player in the program's history to be named the Melberger Award recipient. Phelan led the nation in receiving yards per game en route to being named a first team all-E8 honoree, was a first team all-East Region selection by D3football.com, as well as a first team All-American by D3football.com. Phelan caught 23 touchdown passes on the year, which tied for the third most in the history of Division III. Since becoming the offensive coordinator at Hartwick, Carr's offenses have not only been ranked high in the Empire 8, but also nationally as well. Seven seasons ago, the Hawks ranked 1st in passing offense (397.3 ypg) and second in total offense (544.2 ypg) in Division III football. Eight years ago, 'Wick ranked in the top 10 in both categories logging 364.4 yards per game in passing (3rd nationally) and 494.3 in total offense (7th). In the 2006 season, the Hawks were ranked 26th nationally in passing offense (248.0 ypg), 28th in total offense (388.6 ypg), and tied for 62nd in scoring (25.7 ppg). In 2005, Hartwick was ninth in passing offense (318.1 ypg), 10th in total offense (489.3 ypg) and tied for 20th in scoring offense (37.5 ppg). In his first season at the helm, Carr led the Hawks to an 8-2 record (3-1 Empire 8 Conference) en route to the school's first postseason victory in history by defeating Curry College (Mass.) 69-14 in the 2002 ECAC North Atlantic Championship Game. Since Carr began his tenure at Hartwick, he has developed 13 All-Americans, two ECAC Northwest Players of the Year as well as the 2002 and 2007 Melberger Award Winners, Dan Pincelli ('02) and Jason Boltus ('07). The Melberger Award is given to the Most Outstanding Player in NCAA Division III football. Two of those All-Americans (Crea, Willis) were a product of the 2005 offense that once again excelled for the Hawks. Crea led the nation in all-purpose yards, amassing 2,279 yards (1,115 rushing, 581 receiving, 583 KO return), while wide receiver Willis earned the number one ranking in scoring (22 TDs, 13.2 ppg.) and finished eighth best in receiving yards per game (121.5) and 35th in receptions per game (6.5). Crea duplicated the feat in 2006 by winning his second consecutive Division III all-purpose yardage title by averaging over 215 yards per game (1,087 yards rushing, 716 yards receiving, and 312 yards in kickoff returns). He was once again tabbed a first team All-American by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Carr had continued success with the offense at Hartwick, having produced the second-highest single-game rushing total in NCAA history (A.J. Pittorino, 436 yards rushing on 46 carries in 1996 against Waynesburg, PA). He was also very influential in the career of former All-American wide receiver Kirk Aikens (Hartwick '99), who still holds the NCAA Division III career records for average yards per catch (22.9) and highest percentage of passes caught for touchdowns (127 catches, 43 touchdowns). Carr, a native of Vestal, New York was a 1990 graduate of the University of New Hampshire. Carr set numerous passing records as the starting quarterback for the Wildcats. After his senior season, Carr was invited to attend the National Football League Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. He returned to the University of New Hampshire and helped the team win the 1991 Yankee Conference Championship as the quarterbacks coach. Carr and his wife Tiffany reside in Oneonta along with their two children, Brady and Kylie. Aaron Zurn
Head Coach
Aaron Zurn is set to lead the Women's Flag Football program as it kicks off in the 2025-2026 season. Zurn sets his sights on leading the new program after serving for four years as an assistant coach on the Hartwick men's Football staff, tasked with coaching defensive backs. Aaron Zurn helped six Hawks achieve Empire 8 All-Conference honors as well as coaching the 2023 NCAA Division III Statistical Champion in Passes Defended per Game. "Women's flag football has grown rapidly and I am excited for the opportunity to coach the first team at Hartwick College, " remarked Zurn. " I want to thank Paul for his belief in me and I look forward to building a program where prospective student-athletes want to grow and compete! Go Hawks!!" Coach Zurn came to 'Wick after seven years as an assistant varsity football coach at Sidney Central High School, and also boasts past collegiate coaching experience at The College at Brockport. Zurn played tailback for The College at Brockport from 2006-2010, where he earned a pair of Bachelor of Science degrees in Communications and Sport Management. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Recreation and Leisure Management from Brockport, received in 2012.

Matt Rogers
Head Coach
Matt Rogers joined the coaching staff at Hartwick in March of 2025, now entering his first season with the Hawks. He comes to Hartwick after most recently serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Wilkes University in 2024. In his stint with the Colonels, he led a record-breaking offense that ranked in the top 50 nationally in rushing, scoring, red-zone efficiency and first downs. Individually at Wilkes, Rogers coached eight All-Conference players, including quarterback and standout running back Elijah Jules, who tied for the national lead with 20 rushing touchdowns. Prior to his time at Wilkes, Rogers spent three years at SUNY Morrisville as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. With the Mustangs, Rogers led an offense that improved in every statistical category including yards per game, yards per play, passing yards and passing touchdowns. In 2022, he helped Morrisville increase their win total by five games and earn a postseason bid for the first time since 2019. While there, Rogers also coached 16 All-Conference players, including quarterbacks, in back-to-back years in 2022 and 2023. Rogers first began his coaching career at his alma mater, Utica University, where he graduated in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. At Utica, he acted as running backs coach from 2016 to 2019, where he led the unit to two single-season and two all-time leading rushers in 2016 and 2018. The Pioneers also reached the postseason twice under his leadership as coach in New York, including the program's first victory in the 2018 ECAC Scotty Whitelaw Bowl. An active member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Rogers also is a respected recruiter in the states of New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In 2019, Rogers also received a master's in liberal studies from Utica University.

Christian Legagneur
Coach
Christian Legagneur was added to the Hartwick Football coaching staff in March of 2025 where he now operates as Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach. Legagneur comes to Hartwick after serving as Graduate Assistant Corners Coach at Utica University in spring 2024. During his time with the Pioneers, Legagneur held a variety of other titles, including JV Head Coach, Social Media Coordinator, Equipment Manager, Co-Film Coordinator, Safeties Coach in the fall 2023 season, and Outside Linebackers Coach in spring 2023. During his own playing career, Legagneur tallied numerous athletic accolades, including a two-time selection to the Empire 8 All-Conference First Team in 2021 and 2022 as a defensive back and 2021 All-Region Safety Honors. In his 2022 season with the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons, he was also selected as a captain.

Michael Cunningham
Coach
Michael Cunningham was added to the Hartwick Football coaching staff in July of 2025, entering his first season with the Hawks. Cunningham comes to Hartwick after concluding his own playing career as a four-year defensive line starter at McDaniel College this past spring. During his time as a player, Cunningham was an instrumental part of the McDaniel defense, tallying up a career total of 48 solo tackles and 56 assisted tackles in 33 games. He also recorded sixteen tackles for loss, resulting in a total loss of fifty-five yards for opposing offenses, as well as 5.5 sacks for a loss of 31 yards.

Jason Salcedo

Jason Salcedo is entering his first season with the Hawks after being added to the Hartwick Football coaching staff in July of 2025. Salcedo comes to Hartwick after serving as Assistant Wide Receivers Coach for the Alfred University Saxons since August of 2024. Prior to his work at Alfred University, Salcedo spent one year as an Athletics Event Management Intern at Alfred State while pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in Sports Management.

Tyler Elmore

Tyler Elmore was added to the Hartwick Football coaching staff as Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach in March of 2025. Elmore comes to Hartwick after previously serving at his alma mater as Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Lines and Tight Ends Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs since the 2022 spring and fall seasons. During his own playing career with the Mustangs, Elmore was named to the 2021 Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team as an offensive lineman and received D3football.com Team of the Week accolades in 2019. Morrisville also competed in back-to-back ECAC Bowl games during his time on the field in 2018 and 2019. For his dedication to the team, Elmore was honored as captain in his senior season.

Mark Theophel
Coach
Mark Theophel joined the Hartwick football staff as the defensive backs coach in 2014. He was promoted to Defensive Coordinator in May of 2015. Theophel came to Oyaron Hill from Becker College where he was a member of the staff from 2010-2014. Among his various titles there was strong safeties coach, co-special teams coordinator, co-defensive coordinator, and inside linebackers coach. His accomplishments with Becker included coordinating a defensive unit that ranked atop the conference in tackles for losses and sacks in 2013. For two seasons, he coached linebacker Melvin Booker, who finished his career as Becker’s all-time leader in tackles, tackles for losses, and sacks. On the special teams end, Theophel helped coach a punt return unit that ranked atop the conference in blocked punts and average yards per return in 2013. Theophel is no stranger to ’Wick as he was member of the Hawks from 2006-2009. He was a part of the 2007 team which earned a Co-Empire 8 Championship and qualified for the NCAA playoffs. In 23 games, he totaled 54 tackles (28 solo, 20 assisted). His best season came in his senior year when he tallied 48 tackles, (28 solo, 20 assisted), one tackle for a loss, a half sack for a loss of six yards, one pass breakup, one quarterback hurry, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble, and one blocked kick. Theophel was selected to the 2009 Empire 8 Conference Sportsman of the Year Team. Theophel graduated in 2010 from Hartwick with a degree in Business Administration. He was a two-time member of the Dean’s List while with the Hawks.

James Wright
Coach
Wright comes to Hartwick after serving as both a Physical Education Teacher and Head Football Coach at Pine Bush Central School in Pine Bush, New York. During his time, at Pine Bush, he led his team to two Section Nine AA Championships. Wright was named the Section Nine AA Coach of the Year in 2019 and a two-time Times Herald Record Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2012. Wright holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Health Education from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Science degree in Special Education from Mount Saint Mary College.
