Richard Carrington

Head Coach

Richard Carrington was named the head coach of the Haverford College men’s lacrosse program in July of 2023. Since Carrington’s arrival the Fords have broken multiple program records. The 2024 squad scored the most goals in a season (209) in program history. The 2025 season saw the team achieve its best start (8-1) in program history. Additionally, the 2025 team earned the highest grade-point-average (3.767) among the 54 NCAA Division III institutions honored with the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar Team Award. Carrington joined Haverford from Amherst College, where he served as the defensive coordinator and assistant coach for the Mammoths. During his tenure at Amherst, Carrington played a pivotal role in guiding the team to consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament, including a third-round appearance in 2023, before falling to the eventual national champion, Salisbury. Before his time at Amherst, Carrington made a significant impact as the first director of lacrosse and head men’s lacrosse coach at Division II Tusculum University in Tennessee. Over the course of eight seasons, he built the program from scratch and achieved remarkable success. Carrington led Tusculum to its best season in program history in 2017, with an 11-4 record and a runner-up finish in the South Atlantic Conference. The team's impressive performance in that campaign earned them a ranking as high as 18th in the USILA/Nike D2 Coaches Poll, and the squad excelled in 10 team statistical categories, securing the 2017 NCAA Division II National Statistical Championship for assists per game (8.93). Carrington’s coaching journey also includes stops at the Virginia Military Institute, Alvernia University, Chestnut Hill College, Kenyon College, Mars Hill University, and Cape Henry Collegiate School. With over 20 years of coaching experience, Carrington has made significant contributions to collegiate lacrosse. He is one of the country’s leading practitioners of men’s lacrosse, and his tutorials have been featured by Championship Productions and the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA). Carrington is the co-founder of Breakthrough ID Clinics, which are instructional and recruiting opportunities designed to reduce barriers for first-generation and underserved students. He has also served on multiple committees for the IMLCA and USILA. Additionally, Carrington is one of the few active men’s lacrosse coaches who has founded two NCAA programs (Tusculum, 2014; Chestnut Hill, 2010). The Charlottesville, Va. native holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mars Hill University, where he was a four-year defensive starter and the program’s career ground ball leader (268). He earned a Master of Arts degree in Sports Administration from Tusculum in 2022. He and his wife, Leanne, have one daughter, Collins Faith.
