Emily Maerz
Head Coach
Maerz was named the head coach at Hood College in August 2014. The 2015-16 team advanced to the conference semifinals for the second straight year. Olivia Hosch and Michelle Shedd were both named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth team. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named the Blazers as an All-Academic team and Meaghan Donahue and Kristin Histand were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. Her first squad earned a playoff berth, advancing the Commonwealth Conference Semifinals. Junior Hosch was named All-Commonwealth, while play at first singles. The team also excelled in the classroom, receiving an ITA All-Academic Team Award. Moreover, Sandra Dziadas, Molly Masterson and Shedd were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. As a player, Maerz finished third all-time in Blazer history with 45 singles wins, 43 doubles victories and 88 total wins from 2009-13. Her 36 career wins at No. 1 singles are a school record. As a senior, she was named to the All-Commonwealth Conference First Team and was All-Capital Athletic Conference during her freshman and junior years. Maerz was the 2013 recipient of the President's Award at Hood's senior student-athlete banquet, given to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their Hood College careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership. She was also a three-year team captain. Maerz is a member of the Professional Tennis Registry and an active USTA tournament player with a 4.5 NTRP rating. She was the 2013 Frederick City Mixed Doubles Champion. Maerz was a tennis instructor at the Villages of Urbana and coached the USTA Juniors in Frederick before returning to Hood. Maerz was also a four-year member of the women's basketball program at Hood, and finished her career fourth in 3-point field goals made. A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society, she graduated from Hood with a degree in political science in 2013. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in public policy from the University of Maryland.
