John Patnott
Head Coach
Patnott has coached 120 All-Americans and had national champions 31 times during his 35-season Hope career. He has also had 41 Academic All-Americans since 1984. Both Hope teams are annually competitive in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and at the NCAA Division III national championship meet. He has coached Hope teams to 31 conference championships 19 by the women and 12 by the men. Patnott was raised in the San Francisco Bay area where he swam competitively at the high school, YMCA and AAU levels. He earned the bachelor and master of arts degrees from California State University at Fresno and received the doctoral degree from the University of Utah in 1989. He lettered two years on the Fresno varsity swimming team, serving as team captain in 1969. As a senior he was voted the team's most inspirational swimmer. Patnott was an assistant coach at California State University in Fresno while working toward his degree and was a full-time instructor and the head swimming coach from 1972-77. Prior to coming to Hope, he was head coach of the varsity swimming and water polo teams at Bullard High School in Fresno and the advanced team coach of the Fresno Swim Club. Bullard was undefeated, winning its league title and section meet. A professor of kinesiology at Hope, Patnott in 2003 was named the recipient of the Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching in recognition of demonstrated excellence in specific activities or aspects of teaching. Caroline Hannema
Assistant Coach
Hannema served as an assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming & diving teams for six seasons from 2011-16. Prior to coming to Hope, Caroline spent four summers coaching in Minnesota with USA Swimming and the New Hope Crystal Plymouth Swim Club. Caroline graduated from Wheaton (Ill.) College in 2011 with a B.A. in Communication. During her time at Wheaton, Hannema was a two-sport athlete, as a member of the swim team and water polo team. Competing for the Thunder swim team, Hannema earned all-conference honors during her sophomore and junior seasons, was a member of four College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin championship teams, and was selected as team captain her senior year. Her time in the 100-yard breaststroke ranks ninth on Wheatons all-time times. Hannema joined the water polo team her sophomore year and started for the Thunder during her junior and senior seasons. Austin Veltman
Assistant Coach
Veltman joined the Hope staff in the fall 2012 as an assistant coach and head recruiter for the mens and womens swimming & diving teams. He Veltman graduated from Hope College in 2011 with a B.A. in Business Management major, along with Religion and Exercise Science minors. Veltman was an assistant swimming coach for Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central High School during the 2011-2012 boys season. During his time on the Hope College swim team, Veltman competed in the backstroke and distance freestyle events. Zack Golin
Coach
Golin spent three years as an assistant coach at Hope before stepping into the head diving coach position in 2010. During his tenure, Golin has been a part of several MIAA Conference Championship teams. Golin has coached eight MIAA Champion divers and numerous All-MIAA divers. During that span, every Hope College diving record has been broken. Golin has coached his divers to three MIAA Diver of the Year Awards, four NCAA DIII National Qualifications, and twelve NCAA Division III Zone-A Qualifications. That success reached a new pinnacle during the 2015-2016 season when six-time All American, Sarah Sheridan, finished her career with Hopes first diving National Championship performance on the 3-meter board and a third place finish on the 1-meter board. Sheridan was named the 2016 NCAA DIII Female Diver of the Year. Golin was named the 2016 NCAA Division II Diving Coach of the Year by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Zack is a 2010 graduate of Davenport University where he earned a B.A. in Marketing. Outside of coaching, Golin owns and operates Golin Insurance Agency LLC in Zeeland. Golin and his wife, Heather, have been married since 2010 and have a beautiful baby girl, Maci, who was born in 2016.
