Kevin Cole
Head Coach
Cole was formerly at Adrian College where he chaired the department of exercise science and physical education. Prior to joining the Adrian faculty in 1998, he taught and coached track and field at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He holds the masters of science degree in physical education from Texas Christian University and the Ph.D. in human bioenergetics from Ball State University. Cole was a four-time All-MIAA athlete, twice in both cross country and track. He was a two-time MIAA champion in the 800-meter run, setting Hope and conference records in the event. He was co-captain of the cross country and track & field teams as a senior. He is a native of Jenison, Mich. His wife, Lynn Kingma Cole, is a 1990 Hope graduate. Jon Lunderberg
Assistant Coach
Jon Lunderberg '82 has been the assistant coach for Hope pole vaulters since 2011 and for a couple years in the 1990s. At Hope College, Lunderberg was a three-time MIAA Pole Vault Champion and three-time MIAA All-Conference. His senior year, Lunderberg tied for 10th in pole vault at the NCAA Division III Championships. Lunderberg's PR was 15’ 3” (4.65 meters) way back in 1982. Lunderberg’s best vault was pole vaulting through an open window into Kollen Hall his sophomore year – he made it on his second attempt.During the day, Jon Lunderberg is a partner at Buiten & Associates providing insurance and bonding for his clients. His wife Marla is an English professor at Hope College. All four of their children attended Hope College.

Paul Markel
Assistant Coach
Paul Markel started coaching at Hope College in January 2003, after graduating from Saginaw Valley State University with a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry. At SVSU, he was a 2-time Jack and Lila Ryder Student Athlete of the Year winner and earned 7 All-American honors. This included NCAA DII national championships in the discus (1999) and the 35# weight throw (2001) and runner-up finishes in discus (2000) and hammer throw (2001). He currently holds the SVSU school records in the 35# weight, discus, and hammer throws. Post-collegiately, Markel qualified for and competed in the hammer throw at the 2004 US Olympic Trials and USA Track and Field Outdoor national championships in 2002 and 2006. He also competed in the 35# weight throw at the USATF Indoor national championships in 2001 and 2002, finishing in 5th place both years. He's recently returned to competition as a Masters thrower and has enjoyed competing against a new generation of throwers. Markel is employed as a food safety specialist at a Holland, Michigan food manufacturer and his wife Holly is employed at Hope in the CIT department. They have one son and live in Zeeland.

Mark Northuis

Mark Northuis '82 has guided the cross country fortunes of his alma mater since 1988. Over 37 seasons, the Flying Dutch have qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Nationals Championships 15 times, earned three NCAA regional titles and claimed 11 MIAA women's titles 11. In 2023, Hope extended a school-record run of MIAA titles to eight after earning a co-championship. The Flying Dutch finished third or higher in the conference standings every year during his tenure. Northuis has coached 13 All-Americans, 55 all-region selections, nine MIAA Most Valuable Cross Country Runners and 169 All-MIAA honorees. A professor of kinesiology, Northuis is also an assistant coach for the men's and women's track and field teams. He has served on the NCAA Division III advisory committee for cross country and track and field. Northuis was a five-time MIAA all-conference cross country and track runner at Hope. He won the 1979 Hope Cross Country Invitational and the 1980 MIAA cross country championship. He finished in the top five at the MIAA meet each of his four years. He was among the nation's top small college cross country runners, finishing 27th as both a junior and senior at the NCAA Division III national championship meet. In track, Northuis won the 5,000-meter run at the 1980 MIAA Field Day. He is still the Hope record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and six-mile run. Northuis earned a master's degree in exercise physiology at the University of Michigan and received a Ph.D. in exercise science from the University of Minnesota. He and his wife, Pam Bulthouse, a 1981 Hope College graduate, have five children, Anders, Elizabeth, Klare, Madalyn, and Michaela.
