David Shuster
Head Coach
Shuster is in his ninth season as the head golf coach at Houston Baptist University, overseeing both the mens and womens programs. Shuster was hired in June of 2007 to resurrect the great tradition of golf programs at HBU, which had been discontinued in the late 1980s. In the school's first year of Southland Conference competition in 2013-14, Shuster guided Preston Stanley to an individual bid to the NCAA Championships. Stanley was an all-SLC honoree after finishing sixth at the league tournament, where the Huskies placed seventh as a team. HBU's women also placed seventh in the SLC tournament, led by Rachel Mulkey's second-team all-conference performance. Off the course, Shuster's teams won awards in the classroom, placing four women on the WCGA All-American Scholar team, the most of any school in the SLC and the state of Texas. Stanley earned first-team all-SLC academic recognition for the men, while Jeffrey Merrell was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the GCCA. The 2012-13 season was a banner year for both the men's and women's programs, and Shuster was awarded each program's respective conference Coach of the Year honor. The men captured the America Sky Conference championship, earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament appearance was the first by an HBU team since 1988. Preston Stanley, the conference runner up, earned first-team all-conference honors, while Brandon Wilhide made the second team. The women claimed their fourth-straight Great West Conference championship in the final year of the league, with Kelsey Lou-Hing claiming her second Great West Conference Tournament individual title. Lou-Hing was joined on the all-conference first team by Katy Kile and Rachel Mulkey. Katie Paxton and Jenny Kang earned second-team honors. Paige Gibson was named the conference Player of the Year during the 2012-13 season, and was joined on the first team by Lou-Hing and Paxton. Natasha Lee, Jessica Ngui and Kang each earned second-team all-conference honors. The men also had a stellar season in 2011-12 with the emergence of freshmen Andy Ariens, Jeffrey Merrell, Stanley and Wilhide, who were the sixth-ranked freshman class nationally, according to Golfstat. The foursome led the Huskies to a runner-up finish at the America Sky Conference Championship. In the 2010-11, Shuster earned his second Great West Conference Coach of the Year Award in leading the women to their second title in as many years. Lou-Hing captured individual medalist honors at the Great West Conference Championship, Balbina Guajardo was named Player of the Year and Jessica Ngui claimed Newcomer of the Year honors. Guajardo, Lou-Hing, Ngui and Paige Gibson earned first-team all-conference honors, while Kang, Gaia Olcese and Alexandra Hopson earned second-team honors. During the 2009-10 season, the women captured the first of their three titles, and he helped guide Olcese to the individual title and conference player of the year honors, while Guajardo was the conference newcomer of the year. Gibson and Lee joined Olcese as first-team all-conference honorees, while Guajardo made the second team. The mens program transitioned to the America Sky Conference, which is consists of many of the Great West schools, and the Huskies finished third in 2010 with five all-conference honorees, and 10th in 2011. During the 2008-09 season, Shuster led both programs in their first season of Great West Conference play. The men won the first-ever GWC championship and the women recorded a runner-up finish. Shuster produced five Great West All-Conference honorees on the mens side and four on the womens side in the 2009-10 season. In addition to those, the womens team produced two members of the NGCA All-American Scholar Team. A native of Fort Stockton, Shuster was an All-State golfer in high school before attending Temple Junior College on a golf scholarship. He finished his collegiate career at Angelo State University. He spent twenty-four years as a high school coach working with multiple sports. His teams claimed State Championships in football and golf. His golf teams and players have won multiple district and region championships as well as having numerous regional and state qualifiers. In his final year at Aledo in 2007, his boys team won the state title while the girls finished third in only their second ever appearance at the state tournament. Those finishes landed him Coach of the Year honors from the NTGCAA. In addition to his coaching and teaching, Shuster also served as the vice president in a family corporation in Ft. Stockton. He also served as the Director of the Recreation Department for the City of Ft. Stockton, overseeing the operation of fifteen different sporting activities for several summers. Quite the golfer himself, Shuster hit his third-ever hole-in-one in December of 2007 with a 3-iron on a 213-yard hole.
