Head Coach

Fuqua is in her eighth year as head track and field and cross country coach after being hired to lead the revival of the HBU program in May 2007. Prior to joining the Huskies, Fuqua spent 12 years as head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at the University of Houston. Over the past seven years, Fuqua has put together a comprehensive men's and women's track and field and cross country program that consistently placed in the top three in the Great West Conference, culminating in a pair of GWC indoor titles in 2013. Under her guidance the Huskies have sent athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Round the past three seasons. In the classroom, HBU's track and field and cross country teams have won national recognition, with the women's track and field squad earning USTFCCCA Academic All-America status in 2012, 2013 and 2014. At UH Fuqua earned Conference USA Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after leading the Cougars to the school's first league title since 1960. In 2006 she guided Sesar Figueroa to a berth in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and Figueroa was tabbed as the C-USA runner of the year in '04. In her first season as head men's cross country coach in 2002, Fuqua coached NCAA national qualifier Michael Olague. Fuqua also guided the UH women's cross country team to a fourth place finish at the 2002 C-USA Cross Country Championships and a seventh place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships. She coached a trio of women's all-Conference USA performers in Emma Lindblom (1999), Jackie Rzepecki (1998) and Stacy Poole (1997). In addition to coaching the men's and women's cross country teams, Fuqua coached Houston's men's and women's middle distance and distance corps throughout the indoor and outdoor track and field campaigns. In 2006, she coached Jennifer Hunt to a third place finish in the 800 meters at the C-USA outdoor championships. Figueroa won the mile race at the '04 C-USA indoor meet, and Olague was the 5,000-meter champion in 2003. Fuqua also has coached three C-USA track and field individual champions and a distance medley relay team in the women's division. She tutored 1998 C-USA indoor and outdoor 800 meter champion Vernetta Rolle and 2000 indoor mile champion Dawn Charlier. Houston also won the distance medley relay at the 1998 C-USA indoor meet. Fuqua started at  UH in 1995 after serving six years as the head cross country coach and assistant track coach at Episcopal High School. She was named Episcopal's Teacher of the Year in 1993-94 and directed Episcopal's girl's track team to two straight SPC state track and field championships in 1992 and 1993. A record-setting distance runner at Houston, Fuqua was a four-time All-American, two-time cross country MVP and two-time track and field MVP. She holds the current UH records in the indoor mile, and the outdoor 800 and 1,500 meters. In 1988, Fuqua qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 800 and 1,500 meter events. Jarrett Gilliam

Assistant Coach

Gilliam begins his first year as an assistant coach for the HBU men's and women's track and field teams. A 2013 graduate of HBU, Gilliam competed in throws for the track team and holds records in the discus throw with a toss of 51.09m and the hammer throw with a mark of 55.31m.

Sesar Figueroa

Assistant Coach

Figueroa is in his sixth year at HBU and his first as associate head track and field coach/recruiting coordinator, after serving as a volunteer assistant for three years. He works primarily with the horizontal jumpers and multi events. He assists with cross country and is in charge of recruiting and equipment for the Huskies. In 2013, Figueroa helped Morgan Pressley to a pair of Great West Conference indoor titles (long jump/triple jump), and guided Garrison Fick to indoor Newcomer of the Year honors. Outdoors, freshmen Desiree Scott (LJ) and Saheed Okunnu (TJ) won GWC gold. In his first full-time season with the Huskies working with the jumpers, he guided Jonathan Staples to 2011 Great West Conference Male Athlete of the Year honors indoors and outdoors, including golds in the indoor and outdoor long jump, and outdoor high jump and triple jump. At the GWC outdoor championships, Morgan Pressley also won the women's long jump. A standout middle distance runner at the University of Houston, Figueroa still competes at the national level and is one of the top road racers in Texas. At the 2009 USA Track & Field National Club Championships in New York, he took silver in the 1500, 5000 and 10,000 while representing On the Run. While at UH, Figueroa qualified for the 2005 NCAA cross country championships and was consistently one of the top finishers in Conference USA competition. In 2004 he helped the Cougars to their first conference men's cross country title in 45 years. Figueroa qualified for the NCAA regional meet in 2006 in the 1500, after winning the indoor mile in '04 and claiming the runner-up spot in the C-USA indoor mile in '05 and outdoor 1500 in '04. A graduate of Baytown Lee High School, Figueroa was third in the Texas 5A state cross country meet in 2001 and was three times named Lee's cross country and track MVP. He holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from Houston, and he and his wife, Raquel, reside in Baytown.

Ulysses Montoya

Assistant Coach

Montoya begins his first year as a graduate assistant coach for the HBU cross country and track and field teams. He is working towards his master's degree in education at HBU. Montoya, a 2014 graduate of HBU, competed in both sports for the Huskies. He set two personal bests in 2013 as a junior, as he was clocked at 1:54.88 in the 800-meters at the Victor Lopez Rice Bayou Classic, then followed that up with a 4:25.38 in the mile at the Houston Leanord Hilton Memorial.

Beau Brehm

Assistant Coach

Brehm, who spent the past two years at the University of Oklahoma, is entering his first year as the sprints and hurdles coach at HBU. This will be his seventh season in Division I track and field. Prior to Oklahoma, Brehm spent a year at the University of North Texas after three years at Texas A&M University. At the University of Oklahoma, Brehm was the strength and conditioning coach for track and field and cross country. Among the athletes he instructed in the weight room was Daye Shon Roberson who finished 3rd in the womens 400-meter dash at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 51.74. Brehm assisted the Oklahoma coaching staff as Roberson and her teammates made appearances at the NCAA Championships in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays with season-best times of 44.02 and 3:33.33, respectively. Brehms athletes also had success indoors freshman Hannah Cunliffe qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter dash with a season-best time of 7.28. In addition to the sprints group, Brehm worked with Brandon Doughty on his way to finishing 4th at the NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with a time of 8:38.35. Prior to Oklahoma, Brehm was a volunteer coach at the University of North Texas where he assisted with sprints, jumps, and combined events. The 2013 outdoor season saw the North Texas womens team win the Sun Belt Conference Championships. Two North Texas athletes would go on to finish as All-Americans at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. From 2009 to 2012, Brehm was a student manager for the track and field team at Texas A&M University.  During that time, the Texas A&M mens and womens teams combined to win four NCAA championships and eight Big 12 championships.  Brehms duties included assisting coaches with practices and meet management, notably the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships and the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Brehm is a certified coach with USA Track & Field, USA Weightlifting, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.  He earned his bachelors degree in finance from Texas A&M University and his masters degree in health and exercise science from the University of Oklahoma.  Brehm and his wife, the former Callen Garcia, have been married since 2013.
