Rick Roberts
Head Coach
Rick Roberts was named head coach of the Husson softball program in January 2024 after serving as an assistant coach since 2019, in his first year at the helm of the Eagles, Roberts guided the Eagles to two North Atlantic Conference Championships and two NCAA Regional appearances and reached as high as No. 20 in the national rankings in 2024. Roberts also oversees facility duties for the Robert & Frances O'Keefe Field and works with the Eagles pitching staff. While as an assistant, Roberts coached six North Atlantic Conference Pitchers of the Year selections: Jen Jones (2021, 2019), McKenna Smith (2023, 2022), Ana Lang (2024) and Sky Johnson (2025). Additionally, Jones, Smith, Lang and Johnson were all selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region in those same seasons. Roberts also helped the Eagles win five NAC championships, including five-straight along with five-straight NCAA Regional appearances. Prior to Husson, Roberts worked as a volunteer assistant varsity softball coach at Ellsworth High School from 1998-2008 and took over head coaching duties from 2008-2015. Roberts has been coaching/playing softball for over 40 years, while spending 20 years pitching and coaching men’s fast pitch softball in Los Angeles, California. Additionally, he has worked as a member of the coaching staff at Sluggers Baseball & Softball Training Facility in Brewer, Maine and teaches pitching for several Maine schools as well as working with hitters and fielders throughout the State of Maine. A native of Los Angeles, California, Roberts worked as an officer for the Los Angeles Police Department for 12 years before moving to Maine in 1998 where he worked as an officer for the Ellsworth Police Department. Lauren Hoffman
Head Coach
Lauren Hoffman has served as the head coach of the Husson women's swimming & diving program since June 2023 and guided the Eagles to a 2024 North Atlantic Conference Championship and a Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference Runner-Up performance. During her first year with the Eagles, Husson broke 32 program records throughout the course of the season and had six swimmers compete at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Open Championship in Annapolis, Maryland. In addition to her men's swimming & diving duties, Hoffman also serves as the head women's swimming & diving coach and aquatics director. Prior to Husson, Hoffman served as the director of aquatics at the Alfond Youth and Community Center in Waterville, Maine. During her time in Waterville, Hoffman also served as the assistant women’s swim coach for the Colby Mules from 2021-2023 and the head swim coach for the Mid-Maine Dolphins during the 2022-2023 season. Before moving back to Maine in 2021, Hoffman worked at Springfield College and Boston University, both within the campus recreation realm. During her time in Massachusetts, Hoffman had coaching stops with the East Longmeadow Marlins, East Longmeadow Spartans, West Springfield Terrier’s and Charles River Aquatics. A native of Orono, Maine, Hoffman earned her bachelor of science in kinesiology and exercise science from the University of Maine, Orono. During her time at UMaine, Hoffman (prev. Dwyer) swam all four years for the Black Bears, and primarily swam sprint free, IM and backstroke. An America East finalist in the 200 Free her junior and senior year, Hoffman earned America East honor roll all four years, was a captain of the team her senior year and was a relay record holder in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle and 200 IM relays. Hoffman is listed among the top-10 in five events in University of Maine swimming history. Following graduation, Hoffman went on to earn her master’s in science in exercise and sport psychology from Springfield College. Dr. Lee Speronis
Assistant Coach
Dr. Lee Speronis joined the Husson University softball program as an assistant coach in 2019, after previously serving on the staff from 2009-2013 and 2015-2016. In addition to serving as an assistant coach under interim head coach Rick Roberts, Speronis also serves as the director and associate professor at the school of hospitality, sport and tourism management within Husson University’s College of Business. Additionally, Speronis is also the assistant dean of Husson University's College of Business. His areas of coaching responsibilities have included the outfielders, base-running, hitting, coaching first base, as well as administrative duties. CAREER AT A GLANCE: Since joining the coaching staff prior to the 2009 season, Speronis has helped the Eagles to 12 North Atlantic Conference Championships, 12 NCAA Regional appearances and three NCAA Regional runner-up finishes in 2015, 2021 and 2024. At Husson, Speronis has helped guide the Eagles to a 366-176-2 (.673) overall record with an impressive 153-13 (.922) mark in North Atlantic Conference contests. Speronis has coached six North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year selections - Dottie Cameron (2010), Amiee Mortensen (2011), Kayla Merrill (2015), Kenzie Dore (2022, 2024) and Julia Gregoire (2025). Robby MacDonald joined the Husson University women's swimming & diving program as an assistant coach prior to the 2017-18 season. CAREER AT A GLANCE: Since joining the coaching staff at Husson, MacDonald has helped the Eagles to a 36-14 (.720) record overall, in addition to four-straight North Atlantic Conference Championships from 2021-2024. MacDonald has coached two North Atlantic Conference Swimmer of the Year winners - Kayla Payson (2022, 2023). MacDonald has guided three North Atlantic Conference Diver of the Year selections - Shelby Peterson (2022) and Riley Mahoney (2023, 2024). MacDonald also won Maine High School Swim Coach of the Year in 1976, 1981 and 1982, in addition to receiving the John Bapst Quarterback Club Award for performance of swimmers and teams in 1977. MacDonald served on the coaching staffs of Jack Nelson, a former United States Olympic Swim Coach, at swim camp in Ft. Lauderdale and Bob Miller, a former National AAU Coach of the Year. At Colby, MacDonald led the women's team to a combined 23-6 dual-meet record in his three years, while also helping the Mules earn their first All-American swimmer in 1988, in addition to leading the men's program to its highest winning-percentage in program history as of 1988.
