Hank Plona
Head Coach
Plona, an assistant coach at IHCC in 2010-11, was tapped to be the new head basketball coach for the Warriors in April, 2015. He led Indian Hills to a 29-5 record in the 2015-16 campaign, 7-1 in the conference, and the Warriors won the Region 11 regular season and post-season championships. It was the sixth highest-scoring team in school history, averaging 95.7 points a game and eclipsing the 100-point mark 17 times. And the defensive average improved by nearly 18 points a game from the year before and was the lowest in five seasons. The '15-'16 Warriors made 354 3-pointers, the second-best total ever at IHCC. Plona came back to Indian Hills after having spent four seasons at one of the top two-year programs in the country, South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, where he was an assistant under veteran coach Steve Green. South Plains made three national tournament appearances in those four years, winning the national title with an undefeated record in 2011-12 and losing in overtime in the championship game of the 2015 tourney. The Texans were 116-21 during Plona's time on the sidelines and two of the losses, both by a point, came in head-to-head matchups with Indian Hills. The Warriors defeated SPC in the quarterfinals of the national tournament in 2014, and then nipped South Plains on a last-second shot in a regular season contest the next season at the Hellyer Center. When he was hired at Indian Hills, those two games, Plona admitted, increased his knowledge and appreciation of IHCC basketball. "It's no secret that Indian Hills has as great a basketball tradition as any two-year school in the country," Plona said. "The success they've had speaks for itself, and having coached there myself I know it's certainly a place where you can compete at the highest level, and try to win a national championship every year." Plona joined the IHCC coaching staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2010-11 season, a year when the Warriors finished 23-10. Before coming to Indian Hills for his first stint with the Warriors, he spent a year as an assistant at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. The graduate of Providence College served as an undergraduate student manager and a graduate assistant coach under Keno Davis while at PC. He holds both a bachelors and a masters of business administration degree from Providence. When he took the job at IHCC, Plona said his Indian Hills teams would play an exciting brand of basketball and then delivered on the promise. "We want to recruit players who can really score the ball, some guys who are fast and athletic. We will definitely play a fast and aggressive style of basketball. I plan to implement a style where we will feature a lot of man-to-man defense and we'll also press a little bit. Offensively, we want to take the first good shot we get. Our teams will put pressure on the opponent on both offense and defense." "I know the people at Indian Hills support the program in a way that is very unique," the IHCC coach said. "There aren't many places with that kind of support. The relationship between the team and the fans is special -- everybody wants to help out and be a part of the success and we want them to be involved." Josh Sash was the first assistant hired after Hank Plona took the head coaching job at Indian Hills, reuniting two coaches who were on the staff at Providence College together seven years earlier. Sash is the Head Assistant Coach at IHCC and is coaching at a school he has a degree from and is only about a 30-minute drive from his hometown. Sash came to Indian Hills from State Fair CC in Sedalia, Missouri, where he was an assistant for five years. The Roadrunners were 89-63 in those five seasons, including a 26-7 record and a national tournament berth in 2013-14, the most successful season in school history. State Fair won their first-ever national tourney game, beating Shelton State in overtime. The IHCC assistant helped lead State Fair to a 24-7 record in his first season in Sedalia when they appeared in the championship game of their region's post-season tournament for the first time since 1979. Prior to his stint at State Fair, Sash was an assistant coach at Temple College, a two-year school in Texas. Before that, he was the video coordinator at Providence. The Friars were 19-14 in his lone season in Rhode Island and earned a berth in the postseason NIT. Sash was part of an historic season at Drake University, serving as a graduate assistant coach under Keno Davis in 2007-08, a year when the Bulldogs went 28-5, won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles and received a No. 5 seed in the NCAA tourney. The Oskaloosa native began his coaching career in his hometown, as an undergraduate student assistant at William Penn University. He was a varsity student assistant for four years and head coach of the junior varsity squad for two years. Sash has an associate's degree from the Computer Programmer/Analyst program at Indian Hills and went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in physical education from William Penn. He completed his master's degree in education and effective teaching from Drake. Josh and his wife Analeigh have two sons, Tandon and Tayson. Cole Dewey is starting his second season at Indian Hills and will be a member of the same coaching staff as current IHCC head coach Hank Plona for the third consecutive season. Dewey joined Plona's first IHCC staff prior to the 2015-16 season after the two were assistants during the 2014-15 campaign at South Plains College in Texas. The Texans finished the year 29-7 and won the WJCAC regular season title, were Region 5 tournament champions and qualified for the NJCAA national tournament, where they lost in the title game in 2015 It was Deweys lone season at South Plains, where he went after a job as an assistant at Garden City (Kans.) CC. At Garden City, he helped lead them to the teams best record in five years, a 22-9 mark, and a third-place finish in the Jawhawk Conference, their highest league finish in nine years. That squad also finished in the top two in the conference in nearly every defensive category, and was third in the country in defensive scoring average with Dewey helping coach the defense. Prior to his stints in the junior college ranks, Dewey was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Campbell University, a Division I school in Buies Creek, North Carolina. As a player at Campbell, the IHCC assistant helped the Camels to 45 wins in three years and the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship. During his six years as a player and coach at Campbell, he was part of a squad that knocked off power conference schools like Auburn, Iowa (in Iowa City) and East Carolina. A North Carolina native, Dewey was coached by his father at South Johnston High School, where he was a three-time all-conference guard who earned academic all-conference honors in each of his four seasons of varsity basketball. Dewey earned his bachelors and masters degrees in Business Administration from Campbell University and he also has a minor in Sport Management from the North Carolina college.
