Head Coach

Cole Dewey is set to enter his second season at the helm of the historic Indian Hills Men's Basketball program. Dewey was tapped as the 18th head coach in school history on May 3, 2024. Dewey guided the Warriors to the program's 20th all-time trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Mens' Baketball Championship in his inaugural campaign. The Warriors boasted a 27-6 overall record, including the NJCAA Region 11 and NJCAA North Central District Championships. The Warriors were ranked in all 15 national polls on the year, including nine weeks inside the top-five. Indian Hills climbed as high as No. 2 in the NJCAA rankings. In one of the most competitive schedules in the nation, Dewey led the Warriors to six wins over nationally ranked teams, including a signature win over No. 3 Triton College (IL) in the regular season finale at the Hellyer Center. Following the conclusion of the year, Dewey was tapped as both the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Coach of the Year and the NJCAA North Central District Coach of the Year. The Warriors garnered a number of impressive accolades during Dewey's first year back in Ottumwa. Abdoulaye Fall was tapped as an NJCAA First-Team All-American while earning ICCAC Player of the Year honors. In addition, Fall was recognized as a College Sports Communicator Academic (CSC) Second-Team Academic All-American. Sophomore William Beugre-Kassi was tapped as an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American in addition to NJCAA All-Region 11 First-Team honors. Freshman Mason Costello was tapped as a first-team NJCAA All-Academic selection, joined by fellow freshman Quinton Perkins II who earned NJCAA All-Academic Third-Team honors. For his efforts with the Warriors, Dewey was selected to attend the Silver Waves Media Elite 75 Power Lunch in San Antonio, TX, one of the most prestigious events for college basketball coaches around the nation each year.   A former assistant coach at Indian Hills, Dewey returned to the sidelines at the Hellyer Center after a notable three-year stint as an assistant coach at NCAA DI Texas A&M University - Corpus Cristi. In three seasons with the Islanders, Dewey helped guide the program to three consecutive postseason berths, including back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Islanders captured two Southland Conference Championships while winning more than 21 games each season. Dewey was a part of the Indian Hills staff from 2015-18, a run that led to a 91-11 overall record, three NJCAA Region 11 Championships, and three trips to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, KS. Dewey's final season at Indian Hills, 2017-18, saw the Warriors climb to No. 1 in the national rankings. Following his time with the Warriors, Dewey was named the head coach at Otero Junior College (CO) from 2018-20 where the Rattlers won 45 games and were ranked as high as No. 5 in the national polls. Dewey followed up his time at Otero as the head coach of Garden City Community College from 2020-21, an institution where Dewey began his professional coaching career as an assistant in 2013-14. In 13 seasons in the coaching ranks, Dewey has been a part of eight conference titles while coaching 48 all-conference selections. Under Dewey's guidance at the junior college level, more than 55 players have gone on to compete at the NCAA Division I level. A native of Willow Spring, NC, Dewey received both a Master's and Bachelor's of Business Administration degree from Campbell University where he was a four-year member of the Camel basketball program. Dewey and his wife, Kristina, have two children – Damian and Maia.

Cole Dewey

Head Coach

Dewey joined Plona's first IHCC staff prior to the 2015-16 season after the two were assistants during the 2014-15 campaign at South Plains College in Texas.  The Texans finished the year 29-7 and won the WJCAC regular season title, were Region 5 tournament champions and qualified for the NJCAA national tournament, where they lost in the title game in 2015 It was Deweys lone season at South Plains, where he went after a job as an assistant at Garden City (Kans.) CC.  At Garden City, he helped lead them to the teams best record in five years, a 22-9 mark, and a third-place finish in the Jawhawk Conference, their highest league finish in nine years.  That squad also finished in the top two in the conference in nearly every defensive category, and was third in the country in defensive scoring average with Dewey helping coach the defense. Prior to his stints in the junior college ranks, Dewey was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Campbell University, a Division I school in Buies Creek, North Carolina.  As a player at Campbell, the IHCC assistant helped the Camels to 45 wins in three years and the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship.  During his six years as a player and coach at Campbell, he was part of a squad that knocked off power conference schools like Auburn, Iowa (in Iowa City) and East Carolina.  A North Carolina native, Dewey was coached by his father at South Johnston High School, where he was a three-time all-conference guard who earned academic all-conference honors in each of his four seasons of varsity basketball. Dewey earned his bachelors and masters degrees in Business Administration from Campbell University and he also has a minor in Sport Management from the North Carolina college.

Cameron Gibson

Assistant Coach

Cameron Gibson joined the Indian Hills Men's Basketball staff as a student assistant for the 2025-26 campaign. Gibson joins the Warriors after a standout prep career at Chariton High School. Gibson was a four-year letterwinner at Chariton where he left the program as the school's all-time assists leader with 438. Gibson also set the school record with 219 career steals and tied a program mark with six three-point shots made in a single contest. Gibson will assist the Warriors in multiple facets of the program, including practice sessions and equipment management.

Trey Rakes

Assistant Coach

Trey Rakes returns to the sidelines at the Hellyer Center for a second season as an assistant coach with the Warriors. Rakes joined the program in May, 2024. In his debut season with the Warriors, Rakes helped guide the program to its 20th all-time trip to the NJCAA DI Men's Basketball National Championship in Hutchinson, KS. The Warriors boasted a 27-6 overall record on the year while capturing the ICCAC regular season, NJCAA Region 11, and NJCAA North Central District championships. The Warriors were rewarded with two NJCAA All-Americans, one CSC Academic All-American®, eight NJCAA All-Region 11 selections, and 19 total ICCAC Academic All-Region honors. Prior to his tenure with the Warriors, Rakes spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at NJCAA DI power Three Rivers College (MO) where the Raiders earned back-to-back trips to the NJCAA Region 16 semifinal round. Rakes was instrumental with the staff in all areas of operation, including scouting, recruiting, and academic oversight. Prior to his time at Three Rivers, Rakes spent one season at Coastal Carolina University as the Player Development and Video Coordinator where the Chanticleers reached the championship game of The Basketball Classic. Rakes' duties included all video-related activities, including scouting and analysis while managing support staff personnel. Rakes previously served as a graduate assistant with the Chanticleers from 2017-2019. Rakes served two seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Colby Community College (KS) from 2019-21. The Trojans produced a historic season in 2019-20, earning the program's first-ever bid to the NJCAA National Championship in Hutchinson, KS. Colby captured the regular season conference title and posted a 27-5 overall record to secure an at-large bid as the No. 11 seed before the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A native of Mount Washington, KY, Rakes spent four seasons as a player at the University of Pikeville where he was a part of a school record 112 wins. Rakes received multiple honors during his time with the Bears, including the 2017 Champion of Character Award, the 2017 Scholar Athlete Award, and the 2017 Charles B. Chrisman Male Athletic Leadership Award. Rakes earned a Master of Science in Sport Management degree from Coastal Carolina University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Pikeville. Rakes and his wife, Taylor, reside in Ottumwa.

Zeke Buyaba

Indian Hills Men's Basketball Head Coach Cole Dewey announced the addition of Zeke Buyaba to the coaching staff, effective July 16, 2025. Buyaba brings a versatile background to Dewey's staff. Buyaba's previous experience includes stops at both the junior college and NCAA Division I level prior to his arrival in Ottumwa. "I'm extremely excited to have Coach Zeke as a part of the Indian Hills family," stated Dewey. "He comes highly recommended from many coaches in the profession. The narrative that I kept hearing about him in the hiring process was that he brings positive energy every day, and is selfless and loyal. These are all qualities that we speak about in our program on a daily basis. Prior to joining the Indian Hills staff, Buyaba served as an assistant coach at Ranger College (TX), overseeing logistics and operations for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI program. Buyaba oversaw skill development on the court, budget management, and strength and conditioning components of the program. Buyaba was instrumental in player development with the Rangers. "Indian Hills has a proud tradition of competing for a national championship year after year," Buyaba stated, "and the passion our fanbase has for basketball is unmatched. I'm excited to connect with our supporters on campus, in the community, and the Hellyer Center." Prior to his time at Ranger, Buyaba spent two seasons at the University of Missouri as a graduate assistant on head coach Dennis Gates' staff. Buyaba was a part of a staff that led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament in 2023, capturing the program's first postseason win in 11 seasons. During his time on Columbia, Buyaba conducted video analysis to aid in player development, gameday and opponent preparation, and player development. "Zeke's experience in junior college basketball and having been on multiple staff's at the NCAA Division I level is exactly what we were looking for," Dewey added. "He has fit in seamlessly so far with the players we have on campus this summer, and I'm sure will continue to do so throughout the year. This year's team is coming together as the summer is starting to wind down, and we can't wait to get started up again in the fall." Buyaba received a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude while serving as the head student manager, supporting practice operations, creating scouting reports, and providing operational and logistical support to the coaching staff. Buyaba received a graduate certificate from the University of Missouri.
