His message to prospective Red Wolves athletes: "My philosophy is based upon our student-athletes focusing on constant self-improvement. We want to develop individual athletes, as well as a team, that will be strong academically and fundamentally sound. We also want to learn and develop a sense of character. If we're not teaching character, we're not doing our job very well."

David Sanders
Assistant Coach
Sanders, a 2013 IU East graduate who starred for the Red Wolf track and field and basketball teams between 2008 and 2013. He has served as an assistant coach for the IU East track and field, cross country and men's basketball teams for two years after graduation. He will continue as an assistant coach for the IU East cross country and men's basketball teams. Sanders competed in track and field for three years at IU East. He claimed the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's track and field athlete of the year award in 2013 after winning five events at the KIAC meet, including individual event wins in the 100 meter dash, long jump and high jump. He holds Level 1 certification from the USA Track and Field Coaching Education Program. "I'm ready. I'm excited for the opportunity here, and I plan on making the most of it," Sanders said. "I plan on getting after it as far as recruiting, bringing in more quality student-athletes who want to be a part of something special, and pushing the athletes who decide to compete in track and field here. "We will aspire to compete against the teams in the upper echelon of the NAIA. They all started from the same point where we started at some point. It will take time, but I want to see us get to that point." Sanders' first IU East track and field team broke 39 indoor and outdoor school records during the 2015-16 school year. IU East produced the men's and women's conference newcomers of the year and put seven athletes on the all-conference team. Sanders graduated from Indiana University East in May of 2013 with a bachelor's degree in general studies with a concentration in social and behavioral sciences and a minor in sports marketing and management. "I've known ever since middle school that I wanted to coach in some capacity," Sanders said. "I wanted to coach here because I have so much invested in IU East. I've been here for five years in the athletic department and I take a lot of pride in playing here, so I want to be here and give back and help out with the athletes here." Sanders was the IU East men's basketball team's starting point guard from 2008-2012. He completed his career as the program's NAIA career leader in assists and steals. He also is a member of the school's 1,000 point club. "By being here for four years for basketball I understand what we want to do and how we want to go about doing it," Sanders said. "For track and field, I've been through it, I ran for three years, and I want to translate that to the kids coming up. "It's a great opportunity to get started, and I'm ready to get it all rolling."
