Brenna Gallagher Roan

Head Coach

Brenna Gallagher Roan ('16) enters her seventh year as the IUP head women's lacrosse coach for the 2025 season. She was named the program's seventh head coach on July 30, 2018. Gallagher Roan has a 61-46 overall record in her first six years at her alma mater.   In 2024, IUP earned two IWLCA all-region honors: Sarah Reustle and Chantal Jimenez as second team selections. IUP also landed five student-athletes on the All-PSAC list, including one First Team Selection. The team went 7-10 overall and posted a 6-6 record in conference action.  IUP had a program-record four IWLCA all-region honorees in 2023: Sarah Reustle, Kathryn Burke, Maggie Marsteller and Sami Shutt as second team selections. Going 12-6 overall and 10-2 in conference play, IUP landed six student-athletes on the all-conference list for 2023.  The only two conference losses came to eventual PSAC West champion Seton Hill. The 12-6 Crimson Hawks matched their record from 2022 and advanced to the PSAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive playing season.  IUP ranked eighth in NCAA DII in scoring defense (8.33) and seventh overall in draw control percentage (.590). Overall, IUP outscored its opponents by a 238-150 margin for the season.    The Crimson Hawks went 12-6 in her fourth season, including two overtime thriller victories over nationally ranked (#18) Seton Hill 15-14 and Lock Haven 13-12. Gallagher Roan wrapped up the 2022 season with a 12-6 record. This is the best program record since 2016. A highlight of the season was the Crimson Hawks six-game winning streak in which they outscored opponents 93-50.  The Crimson Hawks earned PSAC Tournament birth and ultimately finished fourth in the conference. Gallagher Roan had seven Crimson Hawks earn All-PSAC honors which was the most of any PSAC Women's Lacrosse Team in 2022. Three Crimson Hawks were also selected to the All-Atlantic Region team. Gallagher Roan was voted as PSAC West Coach of the Year, just the second time in program history that has happened (Mindy Richmond '13).    Gallagher Roan completed the 2021 season compiling a 6-6 record. Gallagher Roan had six players earn All-PSAC selections and three players earn All-Atlantic Region selections. The Crimson Hawks garnered a PSAC Tournament birth.   Gallagher wrapped up her first year as head coach with a 10-7 overall record and a 8-4 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Crimson Hawks earned the fourth seed in the PSAC tournament before falling to Seton Hill in the quarterfinals to finish the season. Gallagher became the first coach in program history to make the postseason in their first year. In 2019, Gallagher saw senior Ally Burrows earn a third team All-American honor, All-Atlantic Region and All-PSAC selections. Burrows led the Crimson Hawks in scoring, as her team-best 57 goals is tied for the third highest single season mark in program history. One of the best goal scorers in PSAC history, Burrows finished her career with an IUP record 219 goals, a mark that also stands fifth in conference history. Burrows' 266 career points is third most behind former All-Americans Alexa Lodovici (292) and Amy Weinberg(281). Seniors Mollie Gallagher and Katie Martyn also earned All-Region and All-PSAC honors, along with participating in the IWLCA Senior All-Star Game with Burrows.    Gallagher returned to her alma mater after spending the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Misericordia women’s lacrosse program, including serving as head coach in 2018. She led the Cougars to the team’s fourth straight Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championship game appearance and a 12-9 overall record. Misericordia boasted a 6-1 MAC Freedom record under Gallagher, finishing second in the division behind 7-0 FDU-Florham. The Cougars outscored division opponents 125-46, scoring at least 19 goals five times. They led the division in scoring with 320 goals (15.2/game) and finished second with a scoring margin of +5.5. Misericordia displayed balanced scoring under Gallagher, with nine players scoring at least 20 goals and five totaling 40 or more points. Sophomore Kaila Quinlivan led the team with 54 goals and tied a program record with 85 points.  Five of the Cougars' nine losses came by two goals or less, including an 11-9 decision to FDU-Florham on the road in the MAC Championship. Gallagher and Misericordia secured the program's fourth straight trip to the ECAC Championships, falling to Marywood in the semifinal round.    Gallagher helped five players earn all-conference honors in 2018, including four first team selections. She also saw two underclassmen – Brianna Ladner and Quinlivan – named to all-region squads.    Gallagher was named the head coach at Misericordia in May 2017 after one year as the team’s graduate assistant coach, handling many of the day-to-day operations under interim head coach MaryKate Stauffer. The Cougars set a school record for wins in 2017 with a 14-5 record and advanced to the ECAC title game.   She went into coaching in 2016 after a standout collegiate career with the Crimson Hawks. A second team All-American selection as a senior, Gallagher led IUP with 53 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers and finished second with 63 draw controls. The ground ball and caused turnover totals are both top five marks in single season program history.   Gallagher finished her career as the program’s all-time leader with 161 ground balls and 73 games played, starting 71 times. She’s also currently second in the IUP record books with 91 caused turnovers and ninth with 100 draw controls for her career.   She started 15 of 17 games as a true freshman in 2012, finishing second on the team with 22 caused turnovers. Gallagher combined for 40 caused turnovers her next two seasons, before playing just three games in 2015 after suffering a season-ending injury. She was awarded a medical redshirt and returned for her All-American 2016 season.   Gallagher and the Crimson Hawks had a combined 60-28 record from 2012-16, advancing to the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament three times under head coach Mindy Richmond. Gallagher now replaces Richmond, who went 105-67 in 10 years at IUP, after she left to take over the program at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.   Gallagher earned bachelor's degrees in child development and family relations, and sociology and human services from IUP. Gallagher Roan has earned her master's degree in employment and labor relations from IUP.  Gallagher Roan is married to Dan Roan and they reside in Indiana, PA. The two have a daughter, Carsyn Everleigh Roan, born in April 2023.  Gallagher Roan grew up in Cranberry, PA as the daughter of Steve and Susie Gallagher. She attended Seneca Valley High School.   Brenna Gallagher Roan  | Head Coaching Record (Through 2023) Year W L Win % Notes 2018 12 9 .571 Head coach at Misericordia (NCAA DIII) 2019 10 7 .588 First season as IUP head coach; PSAC Tournament 2020 2 2 .500 Season cancelled in March 2020 (COVID-19) 2021 6 6 .500 PSAC Tournament 2022 12 6 .667 PSAC Tournament 2023 12 6 .667 PSAC Tournament 2024 7 10 .412 CAREER 61 46 .570 61-46 at IUP (Six Seasons); 12-9 at Misericorida (One Season) Updated January 30, 2025

Mindy Richmond

Assistant Coach

Richmond is hands down the best coach in IUP womens lacrosse program history.   In seven seasons on the sidelines with the Crimson Hawks, Richmond has a 72-48 (.600) overall record, and has taken IUP to four straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) postseason appearances. Those four appearances are the first four in program history.   She has a 45-30 (.600) conference record in her seven seasons, boasting a 27-8 (.771) mark over the last three years. The Crimson Hawks had earned the third seed in the PSAC tournament twice (2013 and 2014) under her watch, as Richmond led IUP to the conference semifinals three straight years (2012-14).   Richmond coached the Crimson Hawks to the programs fifth straight winning season and fourth consecutive postseason appearance in 2015, as IUP finished the year with a 10-8 record. Amy Weinberg broke her own school record and led all of Division II with 67 assists, earning first team All-PSAC and third team All-American honors.   Kim Hooven and Hannah Bertolo also both earned first team All-PSAC honors in 2015, while freshman goalie Angela Lontoc was named to the third team.     Richmond took over a program in 2009 that had been through five head coaches in its first 11 years of existence. She became the programs all-time winningest coach in just her second season, going a combined 14-19 in 2009 and 2010. She then led the Crimson Hawks to an 11-7 mark in 2011, a then-program record for victories in a season, while the winning record was just the second in program history and its first since 2001.   The Crimson Hawks continued their winning ways under Richmond in 2012, as IUP went 11-6 and earned the sixth seed in the PSAC tournament with a 7-4 conference record. IUP clinched its first-ever postseason berth with a thrilling 14-13 victory over national power Lock Haven on the final day of the regular season.   She helped IUP set and tie new victory marks with 13 wins each in 2013 and 2014, as the team advanced to the PSAC semifinals each season.   The program has seen a wealth of talent and individual success under Richmonds tutelage, including six All-Americans, three freshman All-Americans, 12 all-region picks, and 28 All-PSAC selections.   Former attacker Alexa Lodovici (2010-13) is possibly the best player in program history, ranking first all-time in points (292) and goals (167), while also earning the distinction of being IUPs first ever first team All-American as a senior in 2013. Lodovici was also a three-time all-conference selection, being named the 2013 PSAC Athlete of the Year.   Also earning All-American status under Richmond has been Taylor Norwood (2013-14), Drew Hayden (2014) and Amy Weinberg (2014-15).   Richmond was also named the 2013 PSAC Coach of the Year and was the head coach of the South squad in the 2010 IWLCA All-Star Game.     2013 was an historic year for IUP womens lacrosse, as Richmond and the Crimson Hawks finished 13-3 and advanced to the semifinals of the PSAC championships, falling to West Chester on a late goal by a score of 7-6. IUP started the year with a school record 11 straight wins and defeated Gannon and Mercyhurst for the first time in school history, propelling them into the IWLCA national poll. The Crimson Hawks remained in the rankings for the entire second half of the season topping at #12 in the nation. The IUP lacrosse team hosted and won its first postseason playoff game in school history, defeating Gannon by 9 goals. Under Richmond's direction, the Crimson Hawks broke or tied 10 school single season records, including most goals scored (263), fewest goals allowed (131) and lowest goals against average (8.19). IUP led the PSAC with a +8.3 scoring margin, had the most caused turnovers (203), and currently ranks in the top 10 in the nation in seven different categories. The Crimson Hawks boasted the largest number of post season honors ever seen by the program in 2013. IUP racked up four first team all-conference selections, more than any other conference school.   IUP swept the conference major awards marking the first time that any PSAC school has swept the athlete, freshman/rookie, and coach of the year awards as a part of the entire conference. Not only were the Hawks recognized in conference, but three Hawks were named to the IWLCA All-South Region team with two selected as IWLCA All-Americans. Alexa Lodovici and Taylor Norwood were the first IUP lacrosse players ever to be named All-American.     Before coming to IUP, Richmond spent the previous two seasons on the coaching staff at Gannon University, where the Golden Knights had a record of 23-8 over that span. Gannon was ranked in the Top 10 in the nation both seasons and had four players selected to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America squad. With Richmond on the staff, the Golden Knight offense ranked eighth nationally in scoring in 2007 with an average of 14.75 goals per game.   She has spent summers working at the Winner's Edge lacrosse camp in Pittsburgh and the Nike Lacrosse Camp at St. Vincent. She is also head coach for the Intrepid Girl's Lacrosse Club, an elite travel club program in Western Pennsylvania. In 2010, Richmond was also selected to coach an elite U.S. team that traveled throughout Europe and participated in the Prague Cup National Lacrosse Tournament, Czech Republic. Richmond also has worked with the Erie Youth Lacrosse Association, and the Indiana Middle and High schools helping to develop local lacrosse players, teaching them the basic concepts and skills of the sport. Richmond was a volunteer assistant coach at Gannon during the 2006 season following a record-breaking four-year playing career with the Golden Knights. As a senior in 2005, Richmond led the nation with 88 goals, which were the most in school history and fourth highest single-season total in Division II history. Her average of 6.29 goals per game that season is the top mark for one season at the Division II level. Richmond also scored 63 goals the previous season to give her two of the top eight marks in Gannon history. A native of Newark, N.Y., Richmond is third at Gannon and 15th in the country in career goals with 219. She also shares the school record with nine goals in a game against Saint Vincent in 2004, and scored seven or more goals in a game a total of 10 times. In addition to ranking third in career goals, Richmond also stands seventh in points with 242 and is second for game winning goals. Richmond was named to the IWLCA All-American squad following her junior and senior seasons and served as team captain both years. She was nominated by Gannon for the 2005 NCAA Woman of the Year award. She was selected to represent the United States as part of the Athletes International team at the Prague Cup in the Czech Republic in 2004, and was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player in the tournament after leading her team to a second place finish. Richmond received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Gannon in 2005 and is currently studying for her master's in sport science at IUP.     Return to Staff
