Head Coach
Barnes third season as the Head Diving Coach for the Mens and Womens Swimming and Diving Programs at IUPUI. Barnes first season as Head Coach saw great strides for the program at both the Summit League Championships as well as the NCAA Zone Championships. At the 2015 Summit League Championships, the womens team had all three divers qualify for the 'A' final in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Additionally, those three athletes all achieved career best performances during the Summit League Championships. The mens team also met with success, highlighted by Cody Watts setting a new Summit League meet record in the 3-meter. Watts and Melissa Berger also qualified for the NCAA Zone C Championships with Watts qualifying for the finals in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. The 2015-2016 campaign saw groundbreaking performances for the program. This was highlighted at the 2016 Summit League Championships with the Mens team scoring all 5 athletes including placing 4 of the 5 team members in the A final in both the 1m and 3m events. This was further punctuated with also capturing the event champion in both 1m and 3m events. This performance resulted the Mens team sweeping all of the league awards including Diver of the Year, Diver of the Championships and Diving Coach of the Year. In post season competition, freshman Krisztian Somhegyi became the first athlete in the history of the mens program to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships as well as setting the mens team record score in the platform event. The womens team placed two athletes in the 2016 Summit League Championships A final on both the 1m and 3m events. This performance ranked the womens dive team second in the championships. Additionally, the womens diving team contributed significantly to the overall teams academic performance garnering a CSCAA Academic All-American performance for the year. Prior to his being named Head Coach at IUPUI, Barnes spent 20 years developing some the top talent in the country. Under his guidance, Barnes' athletes have won numerous USAD regional and national championships while also qualifying for the US Olympic Trials. Many of these athletes moved on to compete at the NCAA level and had careers of distinction at those institutions. He has also qualified athletes representing Team USA internationally at the FINA Junior World Championships, Junior Pan-American Games and the 2007 USA FINA Grand Prix in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. In his career, Barnes has also achieved great team success, including winning the team championships at the 1995 NCAA Division II National Championships while at Oakland University while coaching 1992 and 1996 Venezuelan Olympian Dario DiFazio . While serving as the head coach at the University of Toledo, he mentored several athletes including a three time Mid-American Conference champion and 1998 Diver of the Year and a NCAA Division I qualifier. He was also named the Mid-American Conference Womens Coach of the Year in 1998. At the club level while an assistant coach with Lightning Diving Club in St. Louis, Mo., the team placed seventh at the Speedo Junior National Championships in 2001. Lightning Diving went on to win the team title at the USAD Junior West National Championships in 2002 and in 2011 while coaching with The Ohio State Dive Club, the team captured the USAD East Junior National Championships and placed second at the Speedo Junior National Championships. In 2012 the OSDC captured both the USAD East National Championship and the Speedo Junior National Championships. In addition to his coaching duties, Coach Barnes serves as a FINA judge representing the USA on the international level. He has served as a FINA judge since 2007 at several prestigious events such as the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, 2011 UANA Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, the 2012 FINA World Age Group Championships in Adelaide, Australia as well as several FINA Grand Prix and FINA World Series events. Coach Barnes is married and lives in Indianapolis with his wife Kelli and their daughter Anabelle. Matt Bos
Head Coach
Bos training methods have paid dividends for the women's and men's programs as they went from last in the Summit League prior to his arrival, to second and third, respectively, at the 2013 Summit League Championships. With the women placing second, Bos was named the Summit League Women's Coach of the Year. At the 2013 Summit League Championships, Bos helped guide eight women's athletes to all-conference honors, while six members of the men's squad also earned all-conference accolades. Among the all-conference winners was Jenny Oleksiak, who won the individual title in the 200 breaststroke, marking IUPUI's first individual conference swimming champion since the 2005 conference championships. Under Bos' watch, the Jags have rewritten the record books, which included setting a combined 25 new school records at the league meet. In addition to Oleksiak claiming a conference title, Mitchell Gauger was named the Summit League Diver of the Year. In 2011-12, Bos' first season at IUPUI, he led both the men's and women's programs to fourth-place finishes. However, the highlight of the season was watching IUPUI senior diver Chen Ni win her second national championship in the platform dive. Ni, who won the national championship in the same event two years earlier, Bos spent the previous three seasons as the leader for the mens and womens program at his alma mater, Eastern Illinois, where he replaced long-time head coach, Ray Padovan, in July of 2008. In his first season as the EIU head In three seasons on the Charleston, Ill., campus, Bos saw 37 school records fall while mentoring 33 All-Summit League performers, including the 2009 Summit League Newcomer of the Year, Ken Tiltges. Outside of the pool, Bos also saw 24 of his EIU athletes achieve Academic All-Summit League plaudits. Prior to returning to EIU, Bos spent three years as the head swim coach for the San Antonio Wave, a top swim club in Texas. During his tenure, he has coached several Junior and Senior National qualifiers including Jimmy Feigen. Preceding his time in San Antonio, Bos worked for a year and a half as the coaching director at Swimming Wanganui in New Zealand. While abroad, he helped coach athletes from seven different countries with his squad earning its first-ever Top-20 national ranking in 2004-05. Bos also coached Annabel Kosten, who would go on to earn a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics as a member of the Dutch 400 freestyle relay team. Bos was a two-year graduate assistant coach at Eastern Illinois from 2000-02, before working for a season as an assistant coach at Trinity University, an NCAA Division III school in San Antonio. In 2003-04 Bos was the head coach for the Swordfish Swim Team and assistant coach for Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois. During his time as a graduate assistant, he helped coach the Panthers to the 2002 Midwest Classic Championship. Bos is a ASCA level 4 certified coach and earned both his bachelors (2000) and masters (2002) degrees from EIU as a member of the Panthers swim team from 1996-2000. He was a two-time Midwest Classic Champion in the breaststroke and was named team captain as a senior in 2000. Caitlin Hamilton
Assistant Coach
Hamilton is in her first season as assistant coach at IUPUI, having joined the program in the Summer of 2015. Hamilton comes to IUPUI from the University of Wyoming where she worked as an Assistant Coach of the combined program. While at Wyoming, she coached the mid-distance, distance and individual medley swimmers. During the 2013-14 season, she worked as an undergraduate Assistant Coach for Purdue University. In her time as an undergraduate assistant for the Boilermakers, she worked mainly with the mid-distance freestyle and individual medley swimmers. Hamilton also had roles in the Purdue athletic department as an intern for Purdue's Athletic Development Department, the John Purdue Club. As a student-athlete at Purdue, Hamilton earned All-America honors in the 1,650 freestyle during the 2009-10 season. She also earned Honorable Mention All-America honors the following season. She was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. Hamilton graduated from Purdue in the spring of 2014 with degrees in Movement and Sport Science, as well as a degree in Public Health. She is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Sports Psychology.
