Antonio McDaniel

Head Coach

McDaniel took over as the fourth head coach in IUPUI womens cross country history in June 2011 after a two-year stint as top assistant under Joni Sanders. He also helped usher in the women's track program, serving as the program's first head track coach.  In two years as head coach, McDaniel has seen incremental growth in the team's success and coached an All-Summit Leaguer during cross country season. In addition, the program has earned back-to-back USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors in all four years (two as head coach, two as assistant) with the program. McDaniel also helped Rebecca Downs and Kaci Verkamp earn Academic All-Summit League honors and four IUPUI runners were named among IUPUI's Top 100 in spring 2013.  In his first two years on staff, three IUPUI runners earned All-Summit League accolades and the Jaguars made significant strides in the league standings. In 2010 as an assistant, McDaniel helped IUPUI to a fourth-place finish at The Summit League Championships, marking the programs best league finish since 2003. The 2010 cross country season was highlighted by junior Ana Paez earning Second Team All-Summit League honors when she ran the second fastest 6K in school history. Additionally, sophomore Rachel Zajac posted two times among the 10 quickest 5K races in school history early in the season before being slowed by injury late in the year. During the spring track season, then-freshman Rebekah Jones and Verkamp showed vast improvements in times. The former ran an 18:23.96 5K at the Pacesetter Invitational in Terre Haute while the latter ended the spring on a high note at the Dave Rankin and Pacesetter Invites. McDaniel is USATF Level 1 certified. McDaniel graduated from Indiana State in 2007 with a degree in Social Science Education. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Sycamores cross country team, including helping ISU to three straight conference crowns. Individually, he was an All-MVC performer in 2005 and Verizon Scholar Athlete in 2004. Over the course of his career, he also earned the teams Most Improved and Leadership Award. At the conclusion of his careeer, he held the tenth fastest 8K time in program history. He also competed on the Indiana State track team throughout his career. McDaniel prepped at Indianapolis Pike High School and ran for Sanders his senior year. He was a three-year letterwinner in both track and cross country and capped his career with a Most Valuable Runner award. He was also named Most Improved while at Pike. McDaniel and his wife, Mary, reside in downtown Indianapolis.
