Billy King

Head Coach

King was named the head coach of the Fort Wayne men's golf program in the spring of 2009, and did not waste anytime making his presence felt. At the Wright State Norm Bullock Invitational, the Mastodons came from two strokes behind in the final round to take home the program's first-ever tournament win. King guided the Mastodons to their second tournament title at the 2011 Cleveland State Invitational, winning the title by five strokes over second place finisher Cleveland State and a field of 14 teams. His 2013-14 team tied its best performance at the Summit League Tournament, placing fourth. The 23-stroke improvement tied for the biggest first-to-second round improvement at the Summit League Championships since 1992-93. Jacob Groninger finished runner-up with a tournament total of 5-over-par 221, two strokes back of the winner. He also became the first Mastodon golfer to be named to the All-Tournament Team. His 2011-12 squad equaled the program's best finish at the league championship, finishing fourth, and ended the three-day event just seven strokes out of the title spot. In 2011, King led the Mastodons to the program's best-ever finish at the Summit League Championship, coming in 4th place overall. Earlier in the Spring, Fort Wayne finished runner-up in the Mission Inn Spring Fling in Orlando in a competitive 12-team field. His 2010 squad turned in a 5th place finish at The Summit League Championship in St. George, Utah. Then-Freshman Drew Imel finished just one spot out of All-Summit League honors, with an 8th place showing. King, a Woodlan High School graduate, came to Fort Wayne after spending much of his life working in the golf business. From 1993-1995, he worked as an Assistant Golf Professional at Autumn Ridge Golf Course in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After a successful stint at Autumn Ridge, King was promoted to Head Golf Professional and General Manager at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Fort Wayne. King spent five years at Cherry Hill before accepting the same position at Cedar Creek Golf Course in Leo, Indiana. In his prep days, King stood out on the golf course and on the football field. He lettered in both sports, and still holds two Woodlan golf records: lowest score in a match and lowest season scoring average. He graduated from Woodlan Jr.-Sr. High School in 1984. King and his wife Cindy have two daughters, Ashley and Alexis. The family resides in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
