Christy Morgan

Head Coach

Morgan, who was rehired as the Dukes head coach in January 2014. I can honestly say theres a genuine excitement for being back, Morgan said upon returning to the helm of the JMU field hockey program. One of the reasons Ive chosen to come back is because we have the ability to be the best.  James Madison, as an institution and as a hockey program, will attract hardworkers, people with a desire to be the best and are willing to work for it. In 2015, Morgan guided JMU to its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship game appearance, hosted at home after the Dukes won the CAA regular-season crown and earned the top seed in the CAA Championship for the fourth time in program history. JMU finished the 2015 season with a 14-6 record and a No. 18 ranking in the final Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.   Coming out of such a successful season, the 2015 CAA Coach of the Year helped CAA Player of the Year Taylor West earn a spot on the USA National Team. West was an NFHCA Second Team All-American while 2015 CAA Defensive Player of the Year Loes Stijntjes garnered a Third Team All-American nod. Morgan also helped Melissa Wilken to the 2015 VaSID state Rookie of the Year and CAA Rookie of the Year titles.   Morgan, in her first season back, led the Dukes to their first CAA championship game appearance since 2008. Fourth-seeded JMU upset top-seeded No. 18 Northeastern in the CAA Semifinals 3-0 to clinch Morgans 150th career victory. The 2014 season also saw JMU ranked for the first time since 2010, appearing at No. 20 twice.   In 2014, the Dukes opened 4-0 for the first time since 2002. They finished with 12-8 overall record and a 3-3 mark in CAA action. Dana Allaband was voted as the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and was one of seven Dukes to receive CAA postseason accolades. Morgan originally joined the Dukes in 1991, the same year that James Madison field hockey joined the Colonial Athletic Association.  Just three seasons later, Morgan led the Dukes to their first-ever national championship when JMU defeated top-ranked North Carolina in penalty strokes for the 1994 NCAA title.  She became the first person in NCAA field hockey history to win a national championship as both a coach and a player (Old Dominion 1982, 1983, 1984). In her nine previous seasons at JMU, Morgan led JMU to five NCAA tournament appearances (1993-95, 97, 99), including back-to-back final-four appearances (1994, 95).  While at the helm, she also led the Dukes to the 1995 CAA championship, a 2-1 victory over her alma mater Old Dominion. Morgan, the 1993 CAA Coach of the Year and NCAA South Region Coach of the Year, was inducted into the JMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.  She left JMU to become the head field hockey coach at Davidson in 2001 before leaving the collegiate coaching ranks for nine years.   Upon her return to the sidelines, she spent three seasons (2011-13) as the associate head coach at Wake Forest. Christy Morgan is a proven winner and is only one of two coaches who have won a National Championship at JMU! JMU director of athletics Jeff Bourne stated.  She has a genuine interest in growing young women and will cultivate an environment in the JMU hockey program where everyone will be developed, valued and respected.  She has created synergy and success everywhere she has worked.  We have a great appreciation for her core values and are ecstatic about her return to JMU! As a player, Morgan (ODU 85) helped lead the Monarchs to three national championships (1982, 83, 84).  She was a three-time All-American at ODU and won the 1984 Honda Award for Field Hockey, awarded to the top player in the nation.  She spent eight years on the U.S. National Team (1982-90), two seasons with the U.S. World Cup Team (1983, 86) and was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in 1988. I think that my group will know that, to reach the pinnacle of success, you have to earn it, Morgan reiterated.  And in earning it, it starts with the attitude and it starts with the possibility.  And then, every day, you fight to be the best. Maryette Stuart

Assistant Coach

Stuart joined the James Madison field hockey coaching staff as an assistant coach in June 2015.   "I'd like to thank Coach Morgan for this wonderful opportunity to be a part of JMU field hockey," Stuart said. "It is clear that JMU field hockey is going in a great direction, and I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to support this program during such an exciting time."   In her first season at JMU, the Dukes posted a 14-6 record for the 2015 season and finished ranked No. 18 nationally in the final Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. They won the CAA regular-season title, going a perfect 6-0 against league foes, and earned the top seed in the CAA Championship for the fourth time in program history. JMU fell just short of the tournament title, dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to Delaware.   Stuart previously served as an assistant coach at College of the Holy Cross for three seasons, specifically working with the defensive unit. She managed the Crusaders' recruiting efforts, organized all team travel and coordinated game film exchange and breakdown. She also designed and conducted the team's conditioning programs.   "I am so excited to welcome Maryette Stuart to our program," Morgan said. "She has a great hockey IQ, which will be called upon immediately! She has an eye for talent and is willing to put in the work to go after the most talented and hardworking players in the nation. She is a wonderful fit for the JMU program, a program that has the desire and determination to be one of the best in the nation."   Prior to her time at Holy Cross, Stuart spent one season at Siena College as an assistant field hockey coach, primarily working with the goalkeepers and coordinating recruiting efforts. She also worked as an indoor facilities assistant, scheduling all indoor athletic facility usage for both varsity athletic teams and rental groups.   Stuart has also coached multiple club field hockey teams throughout Massachusetts and New York. Beginning in November 2014, she was the head coach of both the under-14 and under-16 Cape Ann Field Hockey club teams. From November 2012 through July 2014, she was both a head and assistant coach for four club programs with Worcester County United. She also was an assistant coach at both the under-16 and under-19 levels with ADK Field Hockey Club.   In January 2012, Stuart directed and organized a USA Field Hockey National Indoor Qualifier Tournament in Loudonville, N.Y. As tournament director, she facilitated competition for 24 under-16 teams and 25 under-19 teams vying for a berth in the National Indoor Tournament.   "One of Maryette's greatest qualities is her authenticity, which is a great quality for someone who works so closely with people," Morgan said. "She was a standout Division I athlete and has a clear passion for the game. She wants to learn and grow herself as well as contribute to the success of this program, and I trust that she will do just that!"   Stuart was a three-year starter and senior captain at Boston University, playing at both the midfield and back positions from 2007-10. She led the Terriers to the 2009 America East Championship as well as a second-round appearance in the 2007 NCAA tournament. Karen Zarchin

Coach

Zarchin rejoined the James Madison field hockey team, this time as a member of the coaching staff, in August 2015 as an affiliate coach. "I am absolutely delighted and ecstatic to be back at JMU and to be working alongside Coach Morgan and her staff, Zarchin said. JMU is a special place for me and my family, and I am honored to be welcomed back. I have experienced Coach Morgan's energy, passion and leadership as a player and am excited to be supporting her on the sidelines." Zarchin played field hockey for the Dukes from 1994-96 and was a member of the 1994 NCAA Championship team during Morgans first stint as head coach. During her time with the Dukes, Zarchin was an All-South Region honoree, All-Colonial Athletic Association performer and team captain. She is tied for the school record in assists in a game (5) and is tied for 13th in all-time JMU assists (23). After her JMU playing career was over, Zarchin served as a student assistant coach for two years while also making two NCAA tournaments playing for JMU lacrosse. She graduated with a bachelors degree in kinesiology and a minor in coaching. We are very excited to have Karen on our staff, Morgan said. She brings an awareness of the JMU way, a work ethic and a sense of determination to move players to a high level. Karen is very connected to her past teammates and has the desire to get all of our alumnae involved in the support and growth of the JMU program. Karen is all about supporting the team in our mission of being a nationally recognized program. We are so excited about her being such a powerful piece of the JMU staff!   Most recently, Zarchin was the varsity field hockey head coach at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School in Washington, D.C. Over a 14 year span, she notched a 131-58-17 record. In addition to coaching multiple All-Met and All-Independent School League athletes and serving as the schools college recruiting coordinator, she was also the department chair of physical education, health and wellness.   Before her position at Georgetown Visitation, Zarchin was an assistant coach at American University (1998-99) and Georgetown University (1999-2001).   The Dukes return to action on Sunday, Sept. 6, when they host No. 17 Iowa at the JMU Field Hockey Complex at noon.
