Mark Fino
Head Coach
Fino begins his third season as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming & diving program at John Carroll University. Fino comes to John Carroll after guiding the Oberlin College swimming program for the better part of the past decade. "Mark believes in the mission and culture of John Carroll, and I am confident he will be a good fit," said Laurie Massa. "He has worked hard to develop the programs and swimmers at Oberlin, and we expect him to build upon the great tradition of JCU swimming and diving." Fino put his stamp on the historically successful John Carroll swimming & diving program in his first two seasons. Nick Holvey qualified for the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championship. The Blue Streaks had 11 OAC champions, 26 All-OAC performances, set 12 school records, two OAC records and recorded four NCAA B-cuts. After a successful collegiate competitive career at Kalamazoo College, where he lettered four times and was a member of four league championship teams (1999-2002), Fino landed as an assistant coach at Oberlin in 2002. He was elevated to the position of head women's coach in 2004, and then was tabbed to lead both the men's and women's programs beginning in 2006. Over the course of his tenure, Fino became the all-time leader in career dual meet wins in women's swimming & diving at Oberlin, establishing program high water marks for best finish and most points scored at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. Both the Yeomen and Yeowomen rewrote over 70 school records since Fino took over the programs, and in five of the last six years, he has had at least one student-athlete achieve an NCAA qualifying time or score Fino has proven equally adept at recruiting student-athletes with talent in the classroom. In 2010, his men's team held the highest GPA in the country of any swimming & diving team, and his teams were recognized as All-Academic by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) every year he had been at Oberlin. "I am very excited to begin a new chapter at John Carroll University," said Fino, who becomes the fifth full-time men's coach and sixth full-time women's coach in the history of the programs at John Carroll. "My teams will passionately pursue excellence in the pool and the classroom while rooted in the Jesuit tradition of compassion and understanding. In this pursuit, we will bring the OAC championship back to University Heights while teaching our athletes to be men and women for others. Furthermore, I am excited to join a campus that is committed to the development of the whole person, physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual." By accepting the position at John Carroll, Fino returns to his Jesuit education roots as he was a 1998 graduate of the University of Detroit Jesuit High School in Michigan.
