Shaun Keenan

Assistant Coach

Keenan enters his seventh season as the head coach of the John Carroll men's and women's tennis programs for the 2015-16 campaign. After assuming the helm in 2010, Keenan has made a major mark on the program as head coach.  In the 2014-15 season, Keenan guided the men's tennis team to its program's first OAC Championship since 2006. The Blue Streaks rolled to a 7-1 OAC record in regular season play and defeated three foes to win the OAC Tournament.  By virtue of the OAC Championship, Keenan and the Blue Streaks clinched the program's first-ever berth to the NCAA Tournament. The JCU men's tennis team defeated Franciscan University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round.  For his efforts, Keenan received the OAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year award and helped four Blue Streaks earn All-OAC status. Three JCU tennis players also notched Academic All-OAC honors.  The JCU women's tennis team also excelled in 2014-15. The Blue Streaks raced to a 14-7 overall record, 7-1 in OAC regular season play. John Carroll also won two games in the OAC Tournament before falling to Ohio Northern in the finals.  Under Keenan's direction, four Blue Streaks received All-OAC honors, including Nicolette Bourlas. The program has now landed a freshman on the first-team.  The 2013-14 season saw Keenan mentor Jad Abdul-Aal to OAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year honors, just the second Blue Streak to earn this distinction. The freshman went unbeaten at No. 1 singles in conference play finishing with a 14-4 singles mark overall. Keenan had two electric doubles pairings in 2013-14 in Abdul-Aal and Nick Siciliano on the men's side and with Katherine Devine and Tracy Gibson on the women's side. The quartet when playing as partners in their respective genders went 24-4 for the season. Overall, Keenan had five players (three women and two men) earn All-OAC honors for the 2013-14 campaign. Ryan Mullaney capped his career with his fourth-straight All-OAC honors in the spring, 2013. The senior finished with indentical 12-3 records at No. 1 singles and doubles. On the women's side Keenan guided two of his charges to All-OAC accolades in Catherine Engel and Anna Stein. The women's team also made its fourth straight appearance in Cincinnati for the OAC Semifinals in 2013. The men's team upset over fourth-seeded Mount Union to advance to its seventh consecutive OAC Tournament Semifinal appearance in 2012 which was backed by winning two of the three doubles points. On the women's side Maria Ciccolini was a first team selection to the Capital One Academic All-District Seven women's at-large team as voted on by members of CoSIDA. The 2011 spring slate was was even better for the men's team, as they finished 13-7 overall, 7-1 in the OAC and reached the conference finals. Three Blue Streaks were awarded All-OAC honors following the season.  The women's squad compiled a 6-2 league record and advanced to the OAC semis for the second straight season, placing three players on the All-Conference team. In the 2010 season, Keenan helped both teams advance to the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament. This marked the women's first appearance to the final four since 2006. In his first season, Keenan coached three players to be named to the All-OAC teams. Keenan is a former tennis standout at Wichita State University where he holds the record for most singles wins. He was named the 1998 Scholar-Athlete of the Year after his senior campaign at the school. Prior to his success at Wichita State, Keenan played juniors in Australia where he was ranked #10 in the country.  He is the Head Tennis Professional at Paramount Tennis Club in Medina, Ohio, where he manages and develops the junior and adult tennis programs.  His presence at the university has already attracted several standout players from the Cleveland area to the program. Keenan has held a number of instructional positions since his graduation from Wichita State, including The Maidstone Club in East Hampton, New York, Towpath Racquet Club in Akron, Ohio and a United States Tennis Association (USTA) High Performance Competition Training Centers coach.    Most recently, he was the head coach for the Northeast Ohio Tennis Association under 12s Junior Cup team. In addition to his individual accomplishments, Keenan was a member of the 2005 USTA 5.0 National Championship team.  Keenan is married to the former Tracey Kirkland.
