Mark Hawald
Head Coach
Hawald begins his second season at his alma mater and looks to build off of a successful 2015-2016 campaign. In his first season at the helm of the Blues Streaks, Hawald led the team to a 6-5 dual meet record which included a 4-1 record and second place finish in the OAC. The Blue Streaks won tournament titles at the RIT Invitational and the Washington and Lee Jim Crytzer Invitational. Hawald mentored the team to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional with 6 placewinners which included two NCAA Qualifiers. At the NCAA Championships, Dan Mirman became a three-time All-American with his third place finish at 149 lbs and became the highest placer for the Blue Streaks since 2005. Prior to JCU, Hawald was the head coach at Case Western Reserve University and the University of Mount Union. In three seasons at Case, Hawald forged a 12-31 dual meet record in a rebuilding effort. The Spartans had lost 24 consecutive dual meets prior to his arrival. He coached two NWCA Scholar Teams and two NWCA National Scholar Athletes. Over the course of the five years he coached at Mount Union, Hawald guided the Purple Raiders to a pair of top 20 finishes at the NCAA Division III national championships, including an 8th place showing in 2011. Among his accolades were 14 NCAA Division III National Qualifiers and 7 NCAA Division III All-Americans. In dual meets, Hawald's teams posted a 42-26 record as the Purple Raiders mentor, including 24-4 over the last two seasons. His teams captured two Ohio Athletic Conference titles, and he was a three-time OAC Coach of the Year (2009, 2011, and 2012). Hawald and his team also enjoyed success academically, with two designated NWCA Scholar Teams and 12 NWCA National Scholar Athletes. In 2011, he was named d3wrestle.com National Coach of the Year. He was also named a USA Wrestling Apprentice Coach that same year and traveled with the United States World Team to the World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Prior to becoming a head coach, Hawald had spent two seasons as an assistant. He began his coaching career at John Carroll, serving as a volunteer coach during the 2005-2006 season. He spent the 2006-2007 season at Notre Dame College as an assistant during the Falcons inaugural season. As a competitor for the Blue Streaks, Hawald was a four-year starter from 2002-2005. He was a 2004 NCAA Division III All-American (3rd place at 174 pounds), a four-time NCAA Division III national qualifier, and a four-time OAC Champion. He graduated as the program's all-time leader in victories with 122 a record he shares with Joe Schmidt. His undergraduate success was not limited to the wrestling mat, as he was a three-time NWCA National Scholar Athlete, a 2005 OAC Clyde A. Lamb Award winner (highest honor a student-athlete can receive from the conference), and an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Winner. Hawald has two degrees from JCUs Boler School of Business. He earned his degree in Accountancy in 2005 and his Master in Business Administration in 2007. Coach Hawald and his wife Cindy live in Solon and have two sons, Mark (born January 2014) and Patrick (born October 2015).
