Michael Herman
Head Coach
Michale Herman was hired as the 11th head women’s tennis coach in Johns Hopkins history on August 12, 2024. He joined the Blue Jays from Samford University, where he spent the 2024 season as an assistant coach. In his first season at Homewood, Herman led the Blue Jays to a 16-8 record and a trip to the NCAA Semifinals. In its first season as an independent, JHU earned an at-large bid to the tournament and upset a pair of top-five teams en route to the semifinals. Kamila Wong and Ava Li earned a spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Jay Xiao earned a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals. Wong, Li and Xiao all earned All-America honors from the ITA. Herman helped Samford to a 15-8 record and a berth in the Southern Conference title match last season. The Bulldogs’ 15 wins in 2024 are the most for the program in more than a decade. Two Bulldogs earned First Team All-SoCon honors in singles and teamed up for first team all-conference honors in doubles. Samford also produced a SoCon All-Freshman Team selection. Herman went to Samford after a three-year stint as an assistant for the Washington College men’s and women’s tennis teams. In the Spring of 2022, he served as interim head coach for both programs. Herman helped the WC tennis programs to a combined 47 wins, including the COVID-shortened 2021 season, along with four berths in the Centennial Conference Tournament. Eight singles players and four doubles teams garnered All-Centennial Conference honors during his three years on the Eastern Shore. Herman was a four-year letterwinner at Goucher College, where he graduated in May 2020 with degrees in business management and Spanish. He is currently pursuing an MBA from Samford. Herman helped the Gophers to three straight Landmark Conference Championships and ranked seventh in program history in doubles wins (44) when he graduated. He was named the Landmark Co-Rookie of the Year in 2017 and went on to earn all-conference honors in both singles and doubles. Herman was the recipient of the Goucher Athletic Department’s Neumann Award as a senior.

Kincaid led Johns Hopkins to a 16-8 record and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2025. In their first season as an independent, the Blue Jays earned an at-large berth to the tournament. Dylan Blenkiron and Allen Gong earned ITA All-America honors in doubles, while Chakor Rajendra earned the honor in singles. Rajendra, Blenkiron and Daniel Ardila earned bids to the NCAA Championships for doubles and singles. Rajendra advanced to the quarterfinals. Johns Hopkins went 15-7 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2024. Six Blue Jays combined to earn nine All-Centennial Conference honors, including Ardila, who earned First Team All-CC honors in both singles and doubles. In 2023, Kincaid led the Blue Jays to a 19-5 record and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. He also coached James and Thomas Yu to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship, as well as Thomas Yu to the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship. In his first season, Kincaid guided Hopkins to a 19-2 record, including nine wins over ranked teams. Among those nine wins, Hopkins beat defending national champion, Emory, 6-3. JHU won its record 16th Centennial Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. In addition, Kincaid coached Vishnu Joshi to the title match of the NCAA Singles Championship. Kincaid came to Homewood after three years as the head men’s tennis coach at Haverford College. In his first season with the Fords, he led the team to a 13-8 record, including 7-2 in the Centennial Conference (CC), a berth in the conference semifinals and was named the CC Coach of the Year. His team was 1-2 when the 2020 season was cancelled and went 1-0 in a shortened 2021 season. Kincaid coached the 2018 CC Player of the Year as well as seven all-conference selections. His 2020 and 2021 recruiting classes were ranked in the top-25 in the nation by tennisrecruiting.net. Prior to Haverford, Kincaid spent six seasons as the head men’s tennis coach at Goucher College, where he quickly turned the Gophers’ program around. Goucher had won just two matches the year before his arrival and had never won a conference title. In his third season (2015), he guided the Gophers to the Landmark Conference championship match and their first double-digit win season since 2004. In 2016, Kincaid led Goucher to the Landmark Championship as well as the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and 20-win season. The Gophers added Landmark titles and NCAA Tournament trips in 2017 and 2018. The winningest coach in Goucher history, Kincaid turned in an 86-53 (.618) record with the Gophers, including a 73-27 (.730) mark in his final four seasons. He earned Landmark Coach of the Year honors in 2016 and coached two conference Players of the Year, three Rookies of the Year and 33 all-conference selections. Kincaid began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Salisbury University, his alma mater, in August 2008. In four seasons with the Sea Gulls, he helped the men’s and women’s programs to a combined 107 wins, as well as eight Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) title match appearances. He coached a total of 75 All-CAC selections as well as three Rookies of the Year and the 2009 Player of the Year. In addition, Kincaid mentored an All-American doubles pair and was named the ITA Atlantic South and National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010. Kincaid was a decorated player for Salisbury and played number one singles and doubles in each of his four seasons. He was a three-time First Team All-CAC selection in singles and doubles and was named the 2005 CAC Rookie of the Year. As a senior, he earned All-America honors in singles and was selected the ITA Atlantic South Senior Player of the Year. Kincaid was ranked as high as 20th in the nation in singles and 17th in doubles in his career. He graduated from Salisbury in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. At the time of his graduation, he was the program’s all-time wins leader in singles and doubles with more than 100 combined wins.

Jefferson Butler

Butler joined the Johns Hopkins program in February, 2022, taking over the position of Throws coach. Butler competed at the collegiate level for Morgan State where he ranks third in the shot put and the javelin. Competing in high school, Butler earned All-County honors, was a three time county & regional champion and won two state titles in the shot put. After college, Butler took a few years away from the sport to follow his entrepreneurial interests, but never lost his passion for the sport. During his time away, he studied explosive training, calisthenics and body movement and hopes to bring explosive and heavy technique training to grow the throws program at JHU.

Alex Jebb
Assistant Coach
Alex Jebb, the 2022 USTFCCCA Women’s National Assistant Coach of the Year, is in his eighth year coaching the men’s and women’s track & field teams at Johns Hopkins. In his seven seasons, Jebb’s athletes have earned 3 NCAA Championships, 28 All-America honors, and 80 individual Centennial Conference titles, making Jebb a six-time winner of the USTFCCCA Mideast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Jebb, a former Hopkins track & field captain, returned to Homewood after completing his NCAA eligibility and obtaining his master’s degree at Duke University. The 2022 season saw Jebb mentor Victoria Kadiri to 3 national titles, winning the program’s first indoor NCAA title in the long jump on her final attempt before proceeding to win both the long jump and the triple jump titles outdoors. Kadiri was named the 2022 USTFCCCA National Women's Field Athlete of the Year and the National Scholar Field Athlete of the Year for her accomplishments, which also included her Centennial Conference records of 12.43m (40’9.5”) in the triple jump and 6.06m (19’10.75”) in the long jump. Annie Gutierrez also re-wrote the record books as Gutierrez earned 3 more All-America accolades while setting 4 Centennial Conference records with marks of 5,062/3,603pts in the Heptathlon/Pentathlon, 3.88m (12’9”) in the pole vault, and 8.71sec in the 60m hurdles. Kadiri and Gutierrez combined for 26 points at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, leading the Blue Jay women to a 3rd place finish. On the men’s side, Justin Canedy broke Andrew Bartnett’s conference record in the Heptathlon with a score of 5,245pts which moved him into the Top 10 All-time for Division III at the time. Canedy qualified for 4 events at the 2022 NCAA Division III championships, including his program record triple jump of 14.81m (48’7.25”), while Matt Su earned another All-American finish in the long jump outdoors. The 2022 jump squad won 17 Centennial Conference titles overall. The abbreviated 2021 outdoor and 2020 indoor track seasons saw Jebb’s athletes bring home 6 All-American honors and 15 Centennial Conference titles. Veronica Montane, Annie Gutierrez, and Victoria Kadiri earned All-American honors at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field championships in the javelin, pole vault, and long jump, respectively, leading the Blue Jay women to a 4th place finish overall. Gutierrez and Canedy also earned All-American honors for their efforts in the 2020 indoor season. Jebb was named the 2019 USTFCCCA Men’s Mideast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year for the third time in his career for the indoor season after coaching his athletes to 2 Centennial Conference records, 4 school records, 8 conference titles, and 5 NCAA-qualifying performances. Freshman Justin Canedy earned All-American honors in both the high jump and heptathlon with personal bests of 2.06m and 4,956pts, respectively. Maya Hammonds was the national runner-up in the long jump with a conference record leap of 5.89m, and Matt Su added another All-American honor in the long jump after qualifying with a new conference record mark of 7.24m. Hammonds also set a new school record in the pentathlon (3,403pts). Outdoors, Jebb’s athletes took home 11 Centennial Conference titles and Hammonds and Su each scored another All-American honor in the long jump. Freshman Ethan Bartlett set a new school record in the triple jump with a distance of 14.31m and Canedy set freshman records in the high jump (2.05m), long jump (7.14m), and decathlon (6,340pts). In the 2017-18 school year, Jebb was named both the Men’s and Women’s 2018 USTFCCCA Mideast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year for the indoor season. During the indoor season, Jebb’s athletes recorded 2 Centennial Conference records, 6 school records, 6 Centennial Conference titles, and 4 NCAA qualifiers. Outdoors, Jebb’s athletes registered 2 school records, 6 conference titles, and 3 NCAA qualifiers. Maya Hammonds broke the Centennial Conference women’s long jump record indoors (5.76m) and then bettered that mark for a school record outdoors (5.82m). Matt Su broke the Centennial Conference men’s long jump record indoors (7.16m) and then also bettered that mark for a school record outdoors (7.18m/7.43w). Jenn Su earned NCAA qualifiers in both the pentathlon indoors (3,344pts - school record) and heptathlon outdoors (4,500pts), while Grant Mosser notched his first NCAA championship appearance with the sixth best heptathlon score in Division III (4,987pts). In his second year of coaching at JHU, Jebb was named the 2017 USTFCCCA Men’s Mideast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year for the indoor season. Jebb coached Andrew Bartnett to the #6 All-time NCAA Division III heptathlon mark and a runner-up finish at the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships with a score of 5,238 points. His athletes won 10 Centennial Conference championships, broke 8 school records, 1 championship meet record, 2 conference records, and earned 3 All-American honors, as well as 2 Academic All-American honors. Grant Mosser finished the indoor season ranked #20 in the country in the heptathlon and the outdoor season ranked #21 in the 400H with his school record time of 53.62. Matt Su broke both the indoor and outdoor school records as a freshman, including the 94-year old outdoor school record with a leap of 7.05m. In his first year of coaching at Hopkins, Jebb led 7 athletes to 3 All-American honors, 4 Academic All-American honors, 9 school records, and 3 championship meet records. He coached Andrew Bartnett to a 2nd place finish in the decathlon and Jenn Su to a 5th place finish in the heptathlon at the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in their first seasons competing in those events. At the 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, Jebb coached Devin Conley to an All-American finish in the heptathlon and a 494-point improvement from the previous year. Between the indoor and outdoor Centennial Conference Championships, Jebb’s athletes took home 8 event titles. Jebb was a three-year captain for the Blue Jays and was named the Centennial Conference Championship Field MVP during the 2012 indoor and outdoor seasons. The West Point, NY native set Hopkins records in the 60m high hurdles, indoor long jump, indoor triple jump and outdoor triple jump. In his one season at Duke, Jebb was the Blue Devils’ leading triple jumper, finishing with the second longest jump in school history. Jebb was also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in his lone season at Duke. Jebb double majored at Hopkins in biomedical engineering and applied math & statistics and received his master’s degree from Duke in engineering management.
