Kean University Women's Basketball

King enters her fifth season at the helm of the women's basketball program in 2016-17. King helped mold the nations leading scorer during the 2015-16 season: freshman guard Marajiah Bacon. With four freshman in the starting lineup most of the year, the Cougars knocked off both the NJAC Tournament and Regular Season Champions from Montclair State University and the second-seeded tournament runners-up from Rowan University during the regular season. Bacon was named the D3Hoops.com National Rookie of the Year and Honorable Mention All-American by the WBCA. King guided the program to an ECAC Championship in just her second year on the sidelines. The 2013-14 team went 18-12 and also qualified for the NJAC Playoffs. Overall, King has won 50 games in her time with the Cougars. King, who spent nine seasons at Washington and Lee University, became just the fifth head coach in the 38-year history of the program when she was hired in May of 2012. During her tenure at Washington and Lee, King qualified for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament all nine seasons and posted a 123-116 overall record as the programs all-time leader in wins.  She mentored seven players who earned a total of 17 ODAC honors and coached one All-American, while guiding the Generals to their first ODAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Womens Basketball Tournament in 2009-10.  Academically, Kings programs have been just as successful in the classroom, with her 2010 squad ranking 20th among all of Division III with a 3.434 grade point average.  King has been involved in NCAA Division III athletics for nearly her entire career.  A four-year starter at point guard as an undergraduate at University of Southern Maine, King helped lead the team to three Little East Championships and three appearances in the Sweet Sixteen.  As a senior, the Huskies advanced to the National Championship game before falling to Washington (Mo.).  Still ranked among the program leaders, King is ranked second all-time with 563 career assists and is 16th with 1,056 career points. King also has familiarity within the New Jersey Athletic Conference after spending two seasons as a graduate assistant at The College of New Jersey.  During her time with the Lions, TCNJ captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship and appeared in the NCAA Elite Eight in 2001. Prior to becoming the head coach at Washington and Lee, King was a two-year assistant at Division II Bloomsburg University, where the Huskies posted a 36-17 record and a pair of berths to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament in that span.  The 2001-02 squad finished the season 21-6 overall and was ranked as high as second nationally in Division II.  King earned her Bachelor of Science degree in sports medicine from Southern Maine in 1998 and her Master of Arts in teaching/health education from TCNJ in 2001. 

Tasha Pointer returns for her second season in 2026-27 Coaching Highlights Earned her first victory at Kean in a 54-45 victory over Ramapo on Dec. 3rd, 2025.  Three CSC All-District Academic Selections Prior to Kean Highlights Head Coach at UIC (2018-19 to 2021-22) Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Appearance: 2022-23 Horizon League Tournament Appearance: 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, One All-League Selection Two Defensive All-League Selections One All-Freshman Team Selection Two Preseason All-League Selections 12 Academic Honor Roll Selections Pointer was named head coach of the women's basketball program in August 2025. Pointer becomes the sixth head coach in program history.   The Chicago native is no stranger to New Jersey, having coached and played at Rutgers University. Pointer had two stints coaching with the Scarlet Knights under current Head Coach Coqueese Washington and Hall of Fame Coach C. Vivian Stringer.  "I am deeply honored to be named the next head coach at Kean University," stated Pointer. "My vision is to honor those who came before us, develop leaders on and off the court, and chase greatness together."  Pointer was responsible for 18 All-Conference selections, including the 2015 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year (Syessence Davis) and 2008 Big East Defensive Player of the Year (Essence Carson).  The Rutgers Hall of Famer had three recruiting classes rank in the top three and secured a commitment from a top 10 talent in 2013.  During her time on the sidelines, Rutgers made six NCAA Tournament appearances and one WNIT appearance. The Scarlet Knights reached the elite eight in 2007-08 and won the WNIT on 2013-14.   Between her stints with Rutgers, Pointer had two assistant coaching stops (St. John's & Northwestern) and a head-coaching position (Illinois-Chicago).   At UIC, Pointer had one Horizon Leage Second Team selection, one All-Freshman team selection, a Top five conference scorer and a conference leader in blocks.   The Flames had an academic turnaround under Pointer, boasting a 3.5 team GPA with five student-athletes earning a 4.0.  At SJU, Pointer again made the NCAA Tournament and won a Big East Title with a 23-10 team in 2016.   At Northwestern, Pointer coached a Big Ten All-Freshman and a Big Ten All-Honorable Mention selection. She recruited future WNBA first round pick Veronica Burton to Evanston.   Prior to her first stint at Rutgers, Pointer had stops at Xavier and Columbia.  At Xavier, the Musketeers won the A10 championship as Pointer coached both the conference Rookie and Sixth Women of the Year award winners.   At Columbia, Pointer coached two Ivy-League selections.  On the court, Pointer was a four-year player and 1,000-point scorer for the Scarlet Knights. She finished with over 1,400 career points and set the Rutgers all-time assists and steals records at the end of her career. Pointer guided the 2000 Rutgers squad to the first-ever final four appearance as a junior captain. At the conclusion of her collegiate career, she was the only player in Big East conference history to record 1,000 points, 700 assists, 500 rebounds, and 250 steals. The Big East Rookie of the Year in 1998 earned numerous honors over her 4-year career, including two All-American nods before her draft selection in the fourth round of the 2001 WNBA draft by the Portland Fire.   Pointer later played for the Chicago Blaze of the NBWL.   Pointer earned her bachelor's degree in journalism and mass media in 2001 and master's degree in education administration and supervision in 2003, both from Rutgers.  Head Coach Tasha Pointer Career Summary Year Record Postseason 2025-26 2-20 Updated 6-30-26
