Ashley Irwin

Coach

Irwin's second season as Keystone College's head field hockey coach and will be her first as the Giants' head women's lacrosse coach.  Irwin, who was a four-year starter at Kings College, took over the Giants field hockey program just before the start of the 2014 season after coaching three sports at local high schools and was named Keystone's head women's lacrosse coach in November of 2015. In the fall of 2016, Irwin guided the field hockey team to its second-straight Colonial States Athletic Conference playoff appearance, marking the first time the Giants earned back-to-back playoff berths since the squad made three straight trips to the postseason from 2008-2010.  The Giants finished the year with a 6-11 overall record while going 3-4 in conference play and were defeated in the postseason by top-seeded Gwynedd Mercy University, who the Giants battled to their closet conference contest of the regular season in a 2-1 setback to the Griffins.  Following the season, junior midfield Shelby Croasdale and sophomore goalkeeper Emily Hawkins were named First Team All-CSAC while sophomore forward Kayla Bain and freshman defender April Llewellyn earned Second Team All-CSAC honors. In the spring of 2016, Irwin led Keystone's women's lacrosse team to a remarkable turnaround in just the second-year of varsity competition for the Giants.  After inheriting a squad that went winless the previous year, Irwin guided Keystone to a 4-7 overall record and only a heartbreaking, 16-14 loss on the final day of the regular season kept the Giants out of the CSAC playoffs as the team finished with a 3-6 mark in league play.  Following the season, three Giants earned All-Conference honors: sophomore midfielder Emily Hawkins (Second Team All-CSAC), sophomore midfielder Nina Hodanich (Honorable Mention All-CSAC), and freshman defender Kayla Bain (Honorable Mention All-CSAC). In the fall of 2015, Irwin guided the Giants field hockey team to their first CSAC playoff appearance since 2012 as Keystone returned to the postseason after a a two-year absence.  Irwins field hockey squad has posted nine wins over the past two season while going 8-8 in Colonial States Athletic Conference play and the Giants had six players earn All-Conference awards in 2015.  Senior defender Adrienne Mellot was a First Team All-CSAC selection, sophomore midfielder Shelby Croasdale earned Second Team All-CSAC honors, while sophomore forward Rebecca Dempster, sophomore forward Genesis Pacheco, senior defender Justine Firmstone, and senior goalie Amy Denmon were all Honorable Mention All-CSAC honorees. Named as Keystone's field hockey coach just days before the 2014 season, the Giants posted a 4-14 overall record in Irwin's first season and finished tied for fourth in the CSAC with a 3-4 mark in conference play, but missed out on a playoff berth by virtue of a tiebreaker.   Irwin coached the Coughlin High Schools girls lacrosse varsity team for four years from 2012-2015.  As an assistant coach in 2013, Irwin helped the Crusaders post a 7-4 record and qualify for postseason play in just their second year of competition.  The following season, Irwin was elevated to co-head varsity coach and led Coughlin to a 12-4 record and a third place finish in the PIAA District II playoffs.  The Crusaders had six players named to the All-Star team while three seniors from that team will further their playing careers at the collegiate level.   In the offseason, Irwin has remained active in the coaching circuit by serving as an instructor at numerous camps and programs, spending three years as the Assistant Camp Director at the BCMC Field Hockey Camp in Birdsboro, PA and three years as an instructor at both the Eastern Field Hockey Camps and the Kings College Field Hockey Camp.  Irwin has also coached the Mohawks Indoor Field Hockey U16 Dome League team since 2013 and has also served as a camp instructor at the Nike Girls Basketball Camp in West Chester, PA, the Kings College Womens Basketball Camp, and as the Newberry Estates Personal Swim Head Instructor.   Irwin entered the coaching ranks after completing her collegiate playing career, spending a season as the assistant varsity coach for Meyers High Schools field hockey team where she was active in all aspects of the program.  Since August 2011, Irwin has since served as the junior high head varsity coach at Meyers where she also spent the past season as the junior high head girls basketball coach.   A four-year starter on defense for Kings Colleges field hockey team, Irwin helped the Monarchs to four-straight MAC Freedom Conference playoff berths highlighted to back-to-back conference titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007.  During Irwins playing career, Kings posted an impressive, 59-23 overall record while going 21-7 in Freedom Conference competition.  Irwin also helped the Monarchs record 17 shutouts during her four-year playing career.   Irwin was active off the field as well, serving as a member of the Kings College Student-Athlete Awareness Committee.  Irwin was named the President of the SAAC in 2010 after serving as Vice President in 2009 when she also represented Kings at the NCAA SAAC Conference.  A member of the Education Club, Irwin also volunteered her time with programs including Kids Café and the Community Outreach Reading Program while founding Bo Day, a fundraising event in memory of Bo Tech to help create teen suicide awareness in the fall of 2009.    Irwin, who was named the 2015-16 recipient of the Keystone Coaches Sportsmanship Award earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education from Kings in May 2011 and works with Evergreen Behavioral Intervention for Children as a therapeutic staff support member.
