Mark Abney

Coach

Mark Abney has been associated with the men’s ice hockey program at Lindenwood since its inception and has been an assistant coach for the team since 2003. During its first NCAA Division I season in 2022-23, Lindenwood garnered attention around college hockey, playing a competitive schedule against many of the top teams in the nation while winning seven games. The Lions win total is the most for a first-year program since the 2015-16 Arizona State Sun Devils who had three victories against Division I opponents. Lindenwood won the most games against Division I opponents since the 2012-13 Penn State Nittany Lions who had 11 wins that season. His primary responsibility on the staff is video coordinator, but he also works closely with all aspects of special teams for the Lions and is heavily involved in day-to-day operations related to academics, travel and equipment needs. Abney helped the men’s team win consecutive national championships in 2009 and 2010, and then again in 2016.  During that span, Lindenwood also captured several Central States Collegiate Hockey League Tournament championships. Abney was a driving force for the introduction and implementation of video analysis within the hockey program. His current duties include developing pre-game scouting reports, in-game and post-game breakdowns, and creating clips for individual player and team video sessions. Abney helped start the men’s ice hockey program at Lindenwood with former head coach Derek Schaub in 2003. Prior to that, Abney was also instrumental in starting men’s roller hockey at Lindenwood, a program that has won nine national championships. Abney served as an assistant coach for the roller hockey team for the first two national titles before moving to the ice.
