Sara Nagel

Associate Head Coach

Nagel is entering her sixth season at Lindenwood in 2016. After being a graduate assistant coach for three seasons, she was promoted to a full-time coach in 2014.   Nagel has played a key role as Lindenwood has transitioned to the NCAA Division II level. After winning just two games in their first season of NCAA play, the Lady Lions have won 38 games the last four years. In 2012, Lindenwood was the most improved team in the nation, and it finished runner-up to nationally-ranked Limestone in the 2013 ECAC DII Field Hockey invitational Tournament. In 2014, she helped the Lady Lions reach double-figure wins for the second time, including a win over nationally-ranked Slippery Rock. The 2015 season was highlighted by finishing tied for first in the conferences regular season slate, and having a second-straight 10-win campaign.   Prior to coming to Lindenwood, Nagel was the assistant coach at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes Barre, Pa. for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, helping the team achieve its first winning seasons and playoff berths. Nagel also served as the U-19 head coach for the Valley Styx indoor club during the 2010-2011 season. Both teams were awarded slots at the National Indoor Tournament. During the 2009-10 indoor season, she coached U-16 and U-14 age groups for the same club team.   During her playing career, Nagel was a defensive midfielder for the University of Virginia Cavaliers from 2005-2007, playing in every game of the 2006 and 2007 seasons. An injury prevented her from playing in 2008. The Cavaliers played in the ACC and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2006, and the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2007.    Nagel graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology, and received her masters from Lindenwood in elementary education.   Nagel is a native of Swoyersville, Pa. and graduated from Wyoming Valley West High School in Plymouth, Pa. She was married in 2015 to her husband, Shawn.

Sarah Johnson

Assistant Coach

Johnson is in her sixth season in 2016 as the field hockey head coach at Lindenwood.  Johnson is 40-43 during her Lindenwood career, including a 38-30 record the last four years. She helped Lindenwood join the ECAC in 2014, marking the first time that the field hockey program has belonged to a conference. In 2015, Johnson led Lindenwood to a second-straight 10-win season and the Lady Lions tied for first during the regular season ECAC schedule. The Lady Lions had a perfect 5-0 record at Hunter Stadium, including a 4-3 win over nationally-ranked Limestone.   Johnson had eight players receive all-ECAC honors in 2015, including Victoria Gil who was the ECAC Goalkeeper of the Year. Gil, Greta Banhozler, and Nicole Johnston were first-team selections, and five players earned second-team honors. Thirteen field hockey players were named to the ECAC All-Academic team.   In 2014, Lindenwood took another step forward in the NCAA Division II ranks. The Lady Lions tied the school record for NCAA wins with 10. One of those victories was one of the top wins in program history with a 2-1 victory over nationally-ranked Slippery Rock. In its first season in the ECAC, Lindenwood finished tied for second with a 2-2 mark. Johnson helped coach four all-ECAC players, including the ECAC Rookie of the Year, Banholzer, and the ECAC Goalie of the Year, Gil. Carly Brengosz and Linda Oberle were second-team selections on the all-ECAC team. Off the field, eight players earned the NFHCA academic award. In 2013, Johnson and the Lady Lions went 8-9 against a tough schedule that included four games against nationally-ranked NCAA Division II programs. Lindenwood advanced to the finals of the ECAC DII Field Hockey Invitational Tournament where it fell in a shootout to nationally-ranked Limestone.   Four players were named to the ISA All-Conference team, led by Alex Chappell who was named the Independent Defensive Player of the Year. Kristi OConnor and Linda Oberle were also first-team members, and Brengosz was a second-team pick. Ten members of the team were named to the NFHCA National Academic squad. In 2012, Johnson led the field hockey team to being named the most improved team in NCAA Division II. The Lady Lions won eight more games than the previous season and had an improvement of 7.5 games, two higher than the next closest teams. Lindenwoods offense doubled in just one season going from 1.13 goals a game to 2.50 goals a contest. Defensively, the teams GAA went from 3.09 to 1.88. Lindenwood finished the 2012 season on a five-game winning streak, including winning the NCAA DII Independent Alliance Tournament. Three players, Kristi OConnor, Lynsey Porter, and Kayleigh Harrower, were named to the ISA All-Conference team. OConnor finished the season ranked in the top-10 in NCAA Division II in goals and points. Off the field, Porter was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team. In Johnsons first year in 2011, Lindenwood won two games as the school transitioned to the NCAA Division II level. The teams record was deceiving as it lost five games by just a single goal, and it showed vast improvement as the year went on. The biggest example came when the Lady Lions defeated NCAA Division I Liberty in the final game of the season after losing by a 3-0 score earlier in the year. Before coming to Lindenwood, Johnson was the assistant coach at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. In the 2010 season, the Big Red went 6-6 in conference and advanced to the conference semifinals. Johnson has her Level I Futures Coaching Accreditation through USFHA. She stays involved in St. Louis area field hockey by coaching for Gateway Field Hockey in many of its leagues and camps. In the past, Johnson has also been a Futures program coach in the Tulsa and St. Louis regions. During her playing career, Johnson was a defender and midfielder for the Missouri State Bears from 2005-2008. At Missouri State, Johnson was a four-year starter and a two-time captain. In her four years at Missouri State, she started in 79 of the 80 games in her career. In 2007, Johnson was the lone Missouri State representative to be named to the first-team All-MAC. Her junior year, she was also named the Bears Most Valuable Player. During Johnsons time at Missouri State, she represented her team off the field on the NFHCA Division I Academic Squad. Johnson graduated from Missouri State with her bachelor of science degree in human resource management in 2009 and she received her masters in sports management in 2010. Johnson is a native of St. Louis, having graduated from Lafayette High School in Wildwood, Mo.
