Lipscomb University Men's Basketball

William Ness begins his eighth year with Baptist Sports Medicine. He currently serves as the head athletic trainer for Lipscomb University. William's primary sport responsibilities includes men's basketball and golf. Prior to coming to Tennessee, William completed a one-year athletic training internship with the Miami Dolphins Football Organization. The North Dakota native graduated from Minnesota State University, Moorhead in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Athletic Training. After graduation, he went on to work as a summer athletic training intern for the Baltimore Ravens Football Organization before attending graduate school. William completed his Master of Science degree in Athletic Training in 2002 at West Virginia University where he was the head athletic trainer at a local high school for 2 years. William resides in Murfreesboro with his wife Alison and son Jordan.

McMahon was named assistant coach in May of 2025, completing head coach Kevin Carroll's coaching staff.    McMahon comes to Lipscomb after spending the prior two seasons as a graduate assistant at Vanderbilt University. While at Vanderbilt, McMahon was part of a staff that improved the teams’ win total by 11 games in the 2024-25 season and led the Commodores to an at-large bid to the 2025 NCAA Tournament where it narrowly fell to No. 7 Saint Mary’s in the Cleveland regional.    McMahon was a four-year letterwinner at Presbyterian College from 2019-2023 where he was a 2022 NABC Honors Court member. McMahon is a native of Hickory, N.C. and graduated from Presbyterian with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a minor in history. He recently graduated with a Master’s in Education in Leadership and Organizational Performance from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.   

Sanford joins the Lipscomb Men's Basketball staff prior to the 25-26 season.  A Louisville, KY native, Byron comes to Lipscomb from Trevecca after excelling there as both a player and coach. Byron’s basketball career was highlighted by finishing his career in the top-5 in 13 different categories, earning Great Midwest Player of the Year honors and being named Trevecca's Overall Outstanding Student Athlete. He then played three years of professional basketball overseas in Canada, Germany and Lithuania.  For the past four years, Byron, who interned locally at D1 and who is a certified NSCA S&C specialist, served as the strength coach for Trevecca Nazarene University, where he was a part of the staff that most-recently led them to their two best back-to-back seasons in their NCAA DII history.  Sanford and his family reside in Nashville.
