Iain Byers

Head Coach

Byers is in his 12th year at Longwood University in 2016-17 and his ninth year as head coach following his promotion in April 2008. Byers served as an assistant coach beginning in 2005 and has gone on to lead Longwood to an eight-year overall record of 66-80 since being elevated to head coach. Byers, who earned his US Level 2 Coaching Qualification in January 2009, has spearheaded Longwood field hockeys transition from the Northern Pacific Conference (NorPac) to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) that began prior to the 2014 season. Byers has led his Lancers to a 5-7 record in the new conference over the past two years, attracting seven All-MAC selections. In Longwood field hockeys second year in the MAC, Byers continued to help his squad grow against the new competition, finishing the 2015 season 3-3 in MAC play and 7-10 overall. Led by All-MAC first team performers Jennifer Burris and Edel Nyland, the Lancers tied for third place in the final MAC standings but were the last team out of the tournament due to tiebreak protocol. Despite the postseason absence, Longwood ended the year with back-to-back victories and received 11 All-MAC Academic Team citations.  Longwoods first year in the MAC saw the Lancers finish 2-4 in the league and 6-12 overall in a season offset by seven one-goal losses. The Lancers went 5-2 at home, including a 3-1 win over Commonwealth-foe VCU on Sept. 7, and landed four players on the All-MAC team. Among those were first-teamers Jennifer Burris and Lauren Bernard and second-team picks Hollie MacDonald and Edel Nyland. Byers guided the Lancers to a 10-12 overall mark in 2013, including a 6-2 NorPac record, a 4-4 record at home and a third-place finish at the NorPac Tournament. In 2012, Byers led Longwood to an overall record of 8-13, including 5-6 at home and 6-2 in the NorPac, while finishing fifth at the NorPac Tournament.  Byers led Longwood to an overall record of 13-9 in 2011, including 6-3 at home and 5-1 in the NorPac, while finishing third at the NorPac Tournament, the most wins for the program in 11 years. Byers' squad compiled an overall record of 8-13 during 2010, including 4-2 in the NorPac while finishing third at the NorPac Tournament.  He led the Lancers to an overall record of 10-11 during 2009, including 4-2 in the NorPac while finishing fourth at the NorPac Tournament.  Byers led Longwood to an overall record of 10-12 during 2008, including 3-3 in the NorPac and a third-place finish at the NorPac Tournament. For his efforts, he was selected as the NorPac Coach of the Year during his first year as a head coach. During his tenure, 15 Lancers have earned All-NorPac honors, including one Offensive Player of the Year (2008), one East Division Player of the Year (2012) and three East Division Offensive/Defensive Players of the Year. Longwood has received 50 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I All-Academic Squad awards, while five standouts have received selections to the NFHCA All-South Region Team (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013). Byers has handled many responsibilities over the past eleven years, including coordination of team travel, team and opponent video analysis, planning and executing practices, all aspects of recruiting, developing game strategies, event organization and fundraising, and working with team members to attain specific personal and team goals. He developed the first Longwood Preseason Camp and Play-Days, successful events that have raised over $10,000 for the program, and he has recruited the first International student-athletes to the team as well. Byers has worked extensively within the US Field Hockey structure, has coached at the US High Performance Level with the South Region from 2009-2011, and ran the Futures Elite Academy site in 2012.  He has also had experience with the US Coaching Accreditation level 3, the highest level of coaching in the US.
